  • We just can't seem to leave Fakarava. It is an incredible atoll that has so much to offer a visiting sailor.
Apart from snorkelling or diving in the south pass, another amazing thing to do is to visit the motus on the western side of the south pass. Here you will find incredible Pink Sand Beaches, crystal clear water, thousands of sea slugs and amazing fish life. The best part is that we always seem to be the only people there. Surely this is the most beautiful place we have seen?
It is a long dinghy ride as there is no short cut across the reef but it is well worth it.
As Dylan had done his refresher diving session with Jean Francois, it was now time for him to do the Wall of Sharks dive.
We went don to 29 meters and were once again surrounded by an incredible amount of Grey Sharks.
We went into the cave from where you can watch the sharks pass by slowly. What an experience.
Not only are there sharks down there, there are also some really interesting fish like the Trigger Fish. At the time of making this video, we found out how dangerous they can be and will bite a diver or swimmer.
Here is an extract from Scuba.com and this is exactly what the fish in our video was doing. It looks like we were lucky.
'It’s when they are nesting (around April/May is some regions) that they get very feisty and will rigorously protect these nests, which is not to say they don’t get territorial even in non breeding seasons. However, for the most part it’s only to protect their nests and they are pretty docile otherwise. It’s also believed that they’re more aggressive in some places more than others, like Thailand and Egypt for example.
A prominent sign of trouble to come is when the fish rolls onto its side and with their independently rotating beady eyes, gives you the old evil eye just before they charge at you. Sometimes you will see its black fin tips raise in warning of the attack. And then with that little or no at all warning you can count on it to attack and it has the teeth to back it up!'

Such a pristine, lovely area. I was just wondering why ocean water at certain places is so marvelously clear, a sparkling white or blue, when you gave the little talk of sea slugs. The sea slugs are right helpful fellas, though I imagine there is more to understand. And now feeding dazzling fish in the lagoon as if tending an impeccably maintained aquarium. So true at 6:10 - thank goodness the area is protected. The deeper reef, a province of sharks, also amazing-- terrific footage. Thanks for sharing.

HI Frank. The Tuamotus has some of the clearest water we have seen. Breathtaking. Fakarava seems to have everything. We hope that they manage to protect it going forwards..

Outstanding! Beautiful! (sigh) I don't think I could leave Fakarava. Great information, like a guided tour! We've never seen so many sharks in one place, they are fascinating. And the fish... wow! You make viewing especially nice with such a great balance of scenery and family. Mokara is super, can't believe we used to scoff at 'multi-hulls'! 🙄
When diving, we found that tucking our gauges and octopus (spare) into our BCs kept them from catching on coral and kept them in close reach. Handy, as I had to 'borrow' my wife's octopus one time at 50 feet.
On extended time at sea, especially in a pristine anchorage, how do you handle 'pump out'? Never a favorite task.
    Best to you!

Hi. Thanks for always watching our videos and taking the time to comment. The sharks are quite something. They appear a bit docile but I have no doubt that it turns into carnage down there at feeding time. We do know of one diver who had his fin bitten off. Close call. It is strange that when we are down there we are not at all nervous though I think we should be a bit. Ah, the cat V mono debate.... If you are from the UK, a cat is out of the question. It has to be a mono. I think it is changing though and we met a lot of mono sailors on our voyage who wished they had a cat. Some even sold the their monos for a cat. Not many go the other way around. Having sailed half the world on a cat and the other half on a mono, I would go with a cat for a trade wind circumnavigation without a doubt. If sailing from Tahiti to Canada, I would prefer a mono. I could talk about this for hours... Thanks again for watching.

Paradise! Can you get there without private boat? Are there any boats which sell tickets?

Hi, yes you can. You can fly from Tahiti to Fakarava. Once in Fakarava, take a boat trip to the South pass with a local or the dive school. Contact Tetamanu dive school who should be able to help. From there a local in the village should be able to help you get to this area. It is worth the effort.
