Why the Mediterranean Sea is so damn Important
Вставка

- The Mediterranean is one of the world’s most strategic seas, as important as the South China Sea. This region is now seeing a Geopolitics resurgence in conflicts and tension over its waters. The shift of America’s foreign policy to the Indo-Pacific and China; the increasing tension between Greece and Turkey; the expansion of the Dubai and Ankara strategy over the Middle East and North Africa; and the increasing interests of Russia and China in the region are all determining factors in the degradation of the Mediterranean security environment.
The conflict in Libya is an example of the Mediterranean strategic relevance. In this video we will analyze the main actors and resons behing this major conflict.

Really like your style overall - very distinct and memorable. Metaphors and real stats are extremely well balanced, visuals of maps and neon lines are absolutely stunning yet minimalist, and your narration is top notch! And I feel like this is something that should be common practice, but I really appreciate that you put your sources in the description. This channel is gonna go far :)
Thank you so much Jürgen! I reallly appreciate that🙇♂️
I think that’s the bare minimum to provide a source to what it’s being stated in the video. Without, these would be just cool looking visuals. I agree with you, this should be the normality for this kind of political analysis videos!
@@Kamome163 hope you keep at it love you takes
@@Kamome163 Great channel and videos. I would say the background music was too loud. I would say lower it or even better to get rid of it entirely. I firmly believe background music is unnecessary, distracting, and annoying and I strongly believe people want to hear you speak/get information and not hear generic background music.
Great video! Just wanna point out that you said Ghaddafi was killed in 2021, I think you meant 2011

Saying that the UK controls the straight of Gibraltar is BS, I mean... most of it is in hands of Spain and Morocco, the fact that it is called "Strait of Gibraltar" well, doesnt make Gibraltar the most important location in the strait.
Probably it's more misleading than bullshit - the UK definitely controls the strait, nothing can through without the UK's permission, but Spain and Morocco also control it. Each nation has its own right of veto, essentially. Maybe it's not mentioned because people often forget that the UK has a stake in the Mediterranean, whereas they're pretty solid on Spain and Morocco being there?
The straights are jointly patrolled and managed by the UK, Spain and Morocco.
@@roman648 the waters belonging to gibraltar are super tiny. british boats are frequently expulsed by the spanish navy
Great production! I was looking forward to this a lot since I’m Libyan. It would be interesting to see how things develop now given that the Libyan civil war has been effectively over for two years. Most of the issues now have to do with election delays and rules, so it’s pretty much legal squabbling and internal politics. I think the main international spoilers are now Russia (for obvious reasons) and Turkey (to prevent Russia from taking over).
Always great to hear, the international perspective especially from the native inhabitants of those who are going through it.
Truly heartbreaking what going on in your country, bring a proxy for all these global powers and their interest, restricting your progress as a nation, whilst confining the problems they've started.
Wishing you all the best from 🇺🇲 to 🇱🇾
Alan! Thank you so much for your comment! I’m sure we’ll be able to add more stuff in future videos 🙌 Hope you liked my take on the international dynamics that see Libya at their center.
BTW I saw you email and I’ll get back to you asap 👍
@@selleneus this is such a great message and i think it’s beautiful to see this kind of discourse developing on UA-cam. Having the chance to talk with locals is worth more than any academic article or book.
BTW I saw your reply and I’ll get back to you ASAP! I’ve been super busy with the publishing and I can now focus on the next topics!🙌🙌🙌
@@selleneus Thanks for your kind comment. It’s made more heartbreaking when considering that outside powers made us victims as a consequence of our democratic choices. Some absolute monarchies in the Gulf (including Islamist Turkey) would rather set Libya on fire than have it become a liberal democracy, as it had overwhelmingly voted for in 2012. Many people blame the US for the turmoil in Libya; that’s reductive and dangerous thinking. The sole culprits are the mid-level powers shown in this video, I blame them. And I put a pin on the West for not giving us .1% of the support they gave for Ukraine, for essentially very similar conditions like preserving national sovereignty and shared values - that we proved we believed in at the ballot box.
@@A.Severan Alan, I agree with you, but it’s also important to highlight that the west has deep responsibilities in the current situation. Western countries (France and UK in primis) started the military operation again Gheddafi, destroying part of the country infrastructures and ruling class in the process. They left a huge power vacuum and that was understandable that they were leaving Libya open for grab to the mid-regional powers like the UAE and Turkey.
As you mentioned, something similar to what is going on in Ukraine could help address Libya’s instability. It’s crazy to me that the UN didn’t even tried to establish a real PKO in the country.
Great video! I do have to point out you made some mistakes and ambiguous statements in the "Libya's Importance" chapter. Started with Gaddafis ousting in 2021, which was actually in 2011. Government of National Accord was renamed to Government of National Unity over a year ago. There are many groups currently active in the Libyan crisis (maybe you tried to point that out with "clusters focused around.."?), which brings me to the most ambiguous part. "Energy is perhaps the most.." which you continue with "Libya alone holds 3% of the worlds and 39% of the Africa's reserves.". You seem to refer to energy, but later refer the percentage to "these" natural resources. Perhaps you could have generalized with "energy rich resources" or pointed out which resources and in which areas. The latter would build foundation and disperse some of the ambiguity. It would also create a "foreshadow" for the "Toyota war". Overall I enjoyed the video, just found it kinda hard to follow in the above mentioned parts. Keep up the good work!
Another small inaccuracy, Israel doesn't host any US military bases, and to my recollection never has. The US Navy does occasionally dock at Israeli ports and there are often joint exercises but they don't actually have a base or presence like they do in many other places.
Another excellent video! I loved the visuals used in this iteration. The blurring at the start, the line animations used to animate the major shipping routes, and the clean borders on individual countries (plus with different colors to represent different alignments) were all fantastic! Aside from the couple errors that Luka Ratej pointed out in their comment about the “Libya’s Importance” section, the video’s nearly perfect!
The map usage of showing us routes, zoom ins and outs of land areas, and highlights is really MDMAzing and informative, thanks Kamome!

Excellent work as usual. It's good to see some of the machinations in this part of the world since our focus has been so heavily on the Indo-Pacific.

Very good work! Congrats! Also really informative and cool view of our earth and our movements around and about. Hey Kanome, my comment for some reason must've gotten removed.
I wanted to say, a fantastic video as always. This truly covered all the grappling topics regarding the middle east and North Africa.
Great video, as always you have my support.

The Mediterranean waters are among the most military-loaded in the World. Its position connecting the oil-rich Persian Gulf with big energy consumers, the fact that it is home to the three monotheistic religions, and the recent discovery of hydrocarbon reserves in the Oriental basin, make it so.
On point!
Thanks. Interesting presentation format. Very clear, perhaps a bit slow. But great quality

Really amazing love your explanation
What an amazing production, I really liked your vid and the topics you talk about are mostly accurate. One thing I would like to mention is in regards to the last point about using migrants. The 'massive cash inflows' are massively overstated. The given example of Turkey in 2015 is that of 6 Billion Dollars(Euros? can't recall which) of which 3 Billion was actually paid out iirc. Meanwhile the cost of that deal to Turkey has exceeded 50 Billion Dollars according to a pre-covid statement, I can't recall the exact year, might be 2018, but the number of migrants was also way lower at the time than it is now(Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Somalia are still burning after all and we all still remember Afghanistan). Not to discount the leverage these migrants give to the host nations, but the compensation for these deals are peanuts compared to the associated costs. So I think that point is overstated and overblown in media.
Khan! Thank you for your feedback. I see, that's a good point! Apart from the exact number, my point there is that those migration flows have been used as a diplomatic bargaining chip in the past and are therefore important in the context of EU foreign relations. But I agree with you, that kind of money is not nearly enoguh to face a full-blown migrant crisis.
EU payed only 1,5 million Euro's instead of 6mil€. so Eu didn't kept his promise.
Great video, focusing on events and interests rather than pointlessly arguing about who is right or wrong.
Glad you liked it!! I though it would've been way more useful for me and the viewers to understand the actors primary interest in the region rather than focusing on more political considerations
Man, I hadn't seen your videos for a while, they were always very informative, but I always thought the visuals were kind of boring. But boy oh boy how that changed. The animations, the rhythm, the voice tone, the globe movement, the dynamicity of it all, it really kept my eyes glued on the screen. Incredible work.
I wonder if there's a way to implement imagery better without disrupting this globe rotation magic? Maybe *streetview style zoom in* _relevant video_ *zoom out*
Eric glad to see you back here!! Thank you so much!!!
Ohhh that's interesting, you mean as showing down to the buildings level? That could be interesting!

I dare to say if the aggressiveness towards Russian was towards turkey Italy and France would be way more active now
True! Turkey pushed France and Italy even closer together, but not too close 😂
Mhhh the way I see it is that both in France and Italy, Russia is not seen as that big of a threat, compared to central EU countries. But that’s my perception.

Israel has a defence budget of 21b$ making it the second largest in the region, the UAE is third (14:05)
It's not going to be like the south china sea because it's not a place of immediate strategic dispute between the US and China, I think.
Yh, the US is far more firmly entrenched in the Med
Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Greece and Turkey are all US NATO Allies.
Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Half of Libya, Tunisia and Morocco are all pro US (government wise) which is why the US has unfettered, expedited fleet acces through the Suez for Example (I.e US Navy ships get to cut in line, as part of a treaty they have with Egypt)
So Yh all things considered, the western position in the Med is solid.
Russia could be a bit of a disruptor but it’s position is weak enough as to not really matter much.
Really the US need to refocus on the Americas, it’s position on the continents is slipping and it needs to find a better way to maintain its security and develop more solid relations with the governments of the region irregardless of ideology.
