@Warlordgames sent me some sprues for the new Epic Hail Caesar Punic Wars set so I thought I'd paint up one of my the core units of the Carthaginian forces. the daughty Libyan Heavy Spearmen. Also some thoughts on how they play in the game, and a little history for those interested....

Thanks Dom, good ideas with the pen. I like your tutorials because they hit the spot between getting drawn into uber detail and getting the figures to the table in a timely and comfortable way as it is very easy with Epic to get entangled with the excellent detail that is present and then things then just take too long to paint. I think I would be tempted to add a touch of medium to the Nuln Oil wash to weaken it a tad. I was at a show yesterday and Warlord Games were there and they said they were pleased with the amount of interest being shown in the Punic series, which is good as it can only mean that there will be more Epic in whatever period they choose to support.

yes i should weaken it but i dont think about it in time usually! I agree everything i've heard suggests epic has been good so hopefully more to come

I like that trick you did with the pen around the rim of the shields. I'll have to keep that in mind when I graduate from Pike and Shotte to Hail Caesar

I was quite proud of myself with that one tbh, I might have to do it moreoften! I've used it to highlight white belts on some 28mm figures too and that can work

Nice work; I like how a few extra details on the front rank like shield designs go a long way to completing the unit

When basing epics i've found that I can stick both ranks in, then get a brush with pva on and brush between the ranks being quite care free. Then I just sprinkle my home made sand/fine flock mix in between and I'm done. Worth a shot to see if that helps you. I do use Vallejo basing for 28mm figs which is easy enough anyway.

yes i have done the same with my Pike & Shotte minis, but I wanted to use the basing stuff for these

"shake vigorously and work the tip" weird hearing that in the background...

Very Awesome! and I sympathize with the basing. I have been doing 6mm sci-fi fellows, and painting the actual minis takes about 2 minutes, basing takes a while longer. of course I am painting over the basing earth texture, so I guess I am just a glutton for punishment. Cheers!

thanks - yes in many ways nice basing improves the figure so its worth the pain

The unit came together nicely. I might try out that Citadel Guilliman's Flesh paint, sounds like it could be a big time saver for the 28mm Gauls I'm looking to paint.
