In the Networking world, there are two types of switches in the network industry that are common to all vendors.
Cisco L2 switches are used in the access layer
Cisco L3 Switches are used in Core and Distribution layer
Cisco L2 switches are used to connect end devices like pc, laptop, printers, scanners, IP camera's, access badges controllers
Cisco L3 switches are used to provide uplinks to access switches and perform routing to reduce the router load
