In this episode of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about one of the most daring episodes in Alexander the Great’s Indian campaign: the battle with the Mallians. This confrontation is renowned not only for its military significance but also for the near-fatal injury Alexander sustained, which demonstrated his vulnerability and mortality.
The Mallian campaign took place between November 326 and February 325 BC, as Alexander sought to expand his empire’s eastern boundary. The Mallians, along with the Oxydraci, resisted Alexander’s advance, leading to a series of swift and brutal engagements. The campaign culminated in the Siege of the Mallian citadel, where Alexander, in a bold and risky move, leaped into the citadel, leading his men from the front. It was here that he was struck by an arrow that penetrated his lung, leaving him severely wounded.
Despite his injury, Alexander’s forces achieved a decisive victory, resulting in the Hellenic conquest of the Mallian homeland, which is part of modern-day Pakistan. This campaign not only showcased Alexander’s tactical brilliance but also his relentless drive and determination to conquer, even at great personal risk.
