In this episode of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about the 3rd Battle of Panipat, in which Ahmad Shah Abdali defeated Sadashiv Rao. This was the defeat which opened the way for the English’s invasion in India. Ahmad Shah Abdali planned to attack Marathas, when they were busy at the south where Nizam was a challenge for them. This proved a big mistake of Marathas to fight at two ends simultaneously. Cold weather, blockage of arms and ration supply also were the countable reasons due to which Marathas couldn’t resist Afganis.

1761 observed the third battle of Panipat and next year 1762 observed the holocaust of Sikhs in Punjab by Abdali for a decisive victory. Neither Marathas were finished nor Sikhs were eliminated. India's patriotic forces are always eternal.

Marathas lost Panipat because of ignorant Peshwa in Pune who dispatched more non-combatants than Maratha army to north.
Peshwa was over-confident for defeating the Afghans and replacing Mughals in Delhi. His son was about to put on Delhi throne and a large number of non-combatants were brought to change the demography of Delhi.

When the Maratha Army was struck in Panipat, all their ration were eaten by pilgrims, which resulted in starvation of Maratha Army.

Abdali took thousands of maratha women as hostage along with lot of Indian treasure and was taking them to Afghanistan after winning panipat battle , but when jassa singh general Ahluwalia heard about that he decided to attack on him on his way to Afghanistan and they got all maratha women released and send them back to their homes with safety.
Great battle one lakh Marathas died in this battle .....they fought bravely.very few has won with pathans are very strong.

Marathas , jaats , Sikhs should have fought unitedly to defeat afgans . Lack of unity in Indian subcontinent caused us to serve mugals , abdali and later British people . Surajmal should have joined the maratha forces to save the indian land . Same goes for Sikhs . Panipat is geographicaly a point where Sikhs and jaats could have assembled to help Marathas but it did not happen

The fact is maratha were no match for abdali army they were better trained better equipped organized and had lot of experience in warfare.it was no doubt marathas fought bravely to conquer Delhi.but they did a big mistake they occupied the Delhi Throne and were ruleing indian muslims.people kept quiet and accepted their rule.but maraths started prosecuteing Muslims and Islam.that resulted in enmity with many kings and noble people that brought doom to marathas.They brought 3 lakh people with them to change the demography of Delhi.non combatants. army

Play Martha committed a lot of mistakes, but what were Rajput, charts or other other rulers doing in the north how come they did not have guts after thousand years of exploitation to stand up. In any case, 14 Jan makes me uneasy each year, but I am happy that Maharashtra even today, is ahead of it. Because of one person, our God Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
There are several comments here which are calling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Marathas as selfish. Probably they are right. Shivaji Maharaj, who compelled Aurangzeb to come down to South India and loose his grip on Northern India and lessen his tyranny there, like those bulldozing the Kashi Vishwanath temple and scourging evry hindu with a Jizia tax. The same Shivaji, whose son Shambhuraje died a death of unparalleled cruelties of thirty three days by Aurangzeb for Hindavi Swaraj. And the same Shivaji whose descendants and Marathas kept Aurangzeb engaged in a futile battle for 27 years, when their land was ravaged. The same battle which made Mughals go bankrupt and brought their ultimate doom. The same Marathas who dug Aurangzeb's grave in Maharashtra. Yes they all were selfish. Now coming to Panipat. Abdali was the only plunderer after Babur who had come with a plan to establish an empire here in India. Hence, unlike the squirmishes and loot inflicted by Nadirshah, Abdali made his base and fought a grand battle, to gain greater grounds. But for his delusion, the battle inflected heavier losses on him too. So he went back with almost nothing in hand. He couldn't never regroup Afghan tribes and after that battle, Afghans never came back to take advantage of our factions, which unfortunately still prevail.
आपकी बात ठीक है पर पूरी तरह ठीक नहीं । मराठा पेशवायों ने अपने राजपुताना पर कब्जे के समय राजपूत रियासतों पर भारी भरकम टैकस लगाया और कुछ फसल वगैरह कम होने के चलते इसमें देरी हो जाने या कुछ कम देने पर जबर्दस्ती और जुल्म किया। कुछ राजपूत रियासतें तो इस भारी भरकम चोथ और इसके वसूलने कै तरीके के करके मुगलों के दौर को माराठायों के इस दौर से बेहतर मानते धे। इसी जुल्मी वतीरे कारन राजपुताना रियासतें पानीपत के युद्ध दौरान तटस्थ रहीं। मराठायों ने अंग्रेजों और निजाम से स॔धीबध होके मैसूर की रियासत पर युद्ध किया और मैसूर को हराने के लिए अंग्रेजों की लगातार फोजी मदद की। चाहे बाद में इसका फल उनको खुद भी अंग्रेजों से हार के रूप में भुगतना पड़ा।

The Britishers were already there since 1607 in Surat. Then Begal, Madras, Kerala and everywhere else. It was Marathas who kept them at bay until 1808. Peshwas committed some mistakes in assesment else, Britishers would never have settled in India. At least Marathas never lost a false battle like Plassey and Buxar where only a hundred soldiers defeated combined forces of Nawabs and Emperors

Alamghir came to Deccan when Sanbha had succeeded as the family leader after Shivaji's death.
He came to Deccan following his son Akbar, to whom Sanbha had given refuge after Akbar revolted against centre and Sanbha refused the centre's order to hand over him.
Sanbha had also looted towns and villages, government treasury and revenue officers.
A big numbers of maratha people and high ranked men like deshmukhs and patils were supporting the Alamghir and fighting with him. So it will be wrong to say that any particular man was the leader of whole maratha community.
Alamghir had completely wiped out the maratha insurgency in his life time and insurgents were hiding in hills and forest. He was planning to return to Delhi after handing over the paternal jagir of Puna to Shivaji's grand son Sahu and he did this too. Alamghir had brought up Sahu like his own son after Sanbha 's death and Sahu also considered him as his own father.
The grand Mughal empire did not went bankrupt or crumbled after Alamghir's death. It was well intacted till 1739, when Nadir Shah invaded India and looted the royal treasury till its last penny.
