Rick Knowlton is doing a great service to history of chess lovers. I hope some day these pieces will be used to play shadyantra on oldest dashpaad board.
Thanks for asking. The largest piece, the king stands 2 3/4 inches (7 cm) tall, and has a base 1 7/8 inches (5 cm) from front to back. It fits well on a board with 2 to 2 1/4 inch squares (5 to 5.5 cm squares in international standard sizes).
The best 'period' board for this set is the traditional Indian chess mat with no 'black/white' checkered markings. I don't have them listed now, but I do have some here in my studio. I made an informal video with some of these a while ago... please check it and let me know if you have thoughts or questions... ua-cam.com/video/fiIuO-sTzFo/v-deo.html
AncientChess well there very nice boards I really liked them !! thank you for your time and keep up the good work your like the only UA-camr that does good and quality videos on chess I'm going to buy the pieces and board as soon as I have the money!
Thanks for your message. This set would have been played by the old rules, as shown in this video: ancientchess.com/page/play-shatranj.htm [The most similar chess still played today is the Thai/Cambodian chess (หมากรุก)... however, there are differences in the move of elephant ( โคน), in the initial array (old game has pawns on the 2nd rank), and the endgame rules (rules for draw or bare king).]
davidhiko The Lewis chessmen are certainly the most famous find -- and many people would agree they are the most extraordinary. But when those chessmen were being made in Scandinavia, the game already had a long history in the Middle East. These chessmen predate the Lewis men by about five centuries. Always happy to discuss the chess variants!
I thought the oldest was the Lewis chessman?
