The follow-up question to McMaster's first response is a no brainer. Anytime someone is critical of the current admin, you ask, "What should the US be doing instead?"
Kudos for her for asking it.

Yes. Trump wanted out of Afghanistan, but the execution was a Biden Administration execution not a Trump administration execution. So don’t try to attribute the botched withdrawal on the Trump Administration. That would be revisionist history.

Outsourcing a large percentage of our manufacturing offshore, and thus diminishing our domestic capabilities, regardless of which country receved those contracts, is bad for American self-sufficiency and security. But let's not forget that it was the corporation-friendly Republican policies that allowed that to happen.
The U S. has so much to fix, starting with revamping our educational system to produce a skilled workforce who have the opportunity of obtaining productive and satisfying careers. When we have a large number of citizens afraid that they can't compete with immigrants from non-industrialized nations (the "build the wall" crowd), we've failed them. That failure includes promoting an unhealthy diet (hyper-processed foods that are cheap due to lobbied subsidies) and a sedentary lifestyle. Sadly, these folks think China is at fault and rally around the anti-China politicians who actually created the problem.
Of course China aspires to be an economic and military powerhouse; as did/does the U.S. We can act like whiny victims (a distraction straight from the GOP playbook while they rake in mega-$$), or we can fix the *_actual_* problems.

Appreciate his perspective. My sense is many Americans may not have a clue about how to deal with China as our national paradigms and standards of living have been very different from theirs. Having lived in freedom, how could we know where they're coming from, so to speak, and the most prudent course of action to deal with them?
Gen. McMaster, I bought a couple of your books and haven't read them yet, but unfortunately I have to contend with this proverbial troll that lives in my "basement" that rips me off all the time. The theft has been disproportunately excessive. I routinely find myself looking for something I need that I had lying around 2 weeks ago and now it's gone. Everything from clothing, warm winter stuff that I need, kitchen tools, gardening tools, receipts, I've had small bills lifted out of my wallet, food, the list is endless. Am I the neighborhood ATM? I truly resent it b/c I am only being used by a taker who trys to present herself as God's gift to Robinhood when she's just a cheap thief. I've had sentimental items disappear that were of little monetary value but still kind of "cool", so the logic of shifting the wealth doesn't apply. It's just crap. The hypocracy of this experience is beyond the pale and anything but conducive to engendering trust. CIA, or anyone else, be damned if you live in an area like this with a lot of theft. Unfortunately, your books have gone missing along with everything else.
In a manner of speaking, tell the trolls to call off their dogs and bring back my stuff, including your books, then maybe we can get somewhere.

"Germany gave an authoritarian government over their energy, and thus their economy.) What have we done by relying on fossil fuels? Who controls the world price of oil and gas? Aren't OPEC and Russia authoritarian regimes? AS long as we rely of a scarce commodity, we will be at the mercy of those who control that commodity. The sun and wind are available to everyone, and no one can control them. Hence, they offer energy independence, not only for the US, but for all countries.

The CCP was founded on the idea of constant struggle. That means within the party and with other countries (the united front department). One can assume that, like Russia, the CCP only respects strength. We have given the CCP boat loads of leniency and assistance and it hasn't improved their behavior. We need to stand up to their aggressiveness, stand up for all the nations in Asia that the CCP has and is bullying. Xi is gradually strangling his own people and economy. The world is decoupling from China. But Xi can't see this.
