  • I've been reading The Creative Act by Rick Rubin. A review in the newspaper about this book made me stronger in my opinion what this book is about. First of all it is a must read for the artist and I will post a video about this amazing book asap.
You will see me finishing a houseportrait in oil as well in this video and I start a watercolorpainting with a subject which is typical for the next season.
I share a weekly updated spotify playlist for those who are wondering what I'm listening at work: open.spotify.com/playlist/2eS...

Every week as I view your videos, I have through your commentary, come away with thoughts to ponder. As I work in my modest studio, enjoying the solitude, those thoughts creep back into my mind and give me encouragement as I struggle through the work. When all goes well, it is such a blessing. And when progress is elusive, I persevere and more often than not, your little nuggets of thought get me through to the other side. Many thanks!

I didn’t know that there were recipes but I know that if I looked at another UA-cam video that showed how to do a flat wash that the phone was going to be flushed 😂

That’s pretty funny! Arists come upon a scene quite by accident and immediately ‘know’ it is am important moment worth painting…you see chaos (my personal enemy, I’m afraid), but I see contrast and color….am a sucker for color. In these accidental moments I am thinking, “yes, that is cerulean blue and a little orange lake mixed in or that would make a beautiful burnt sienna gray”……Regrettaby I am more of a left-brained artist…a function of my previous life as a pilot.😊

To be free is to soar aloft the thermal flow of life. To spread your wings and to go with the wind, wherever the direction takes you. The stratosphere of the mind presents an endless universe of possibility, should we ever be inclined to open the doors to our souls. The shackles which tether the peace, contentment and harmony within can be unbound, should we allow ourselves to do so. Thank you, so much Titus for what you bring, the storm you once experienced is long gone and the clarity of horizon now lay before you. You are a ray of sunlight. All the very best.

I concur with Sandra. I have been reading Rubin's book, too, and recommend it to all. His work and life testifies to living out his creativity and his thinking about creativity. I, too, will not make this a long comment. Thanks for your input to my week. Watercolor is a lonely journey if you wish to find your own way. Have a good week.

I too have heard the criticisms of Rick Rubin's book. It seems as if some wanted a tell-all about his experiences in the music business. I think those people missed the point completely. I loved the book so much I purchased the audio book too so I could listen to it over and over while I paint, cook, do housework whatever. I look forward to hearing what you have to say about it in your video.

I would be honored to accept your invitation to joining in the "creation of your chaos, knowing that your chaos must remain your own chaos to unwind" and "my own chaos must be my own to untangle for myself".
These, will ultimately prove to be our "own best of our chaotic/creations".
Wouldn't this be the finest example of our own individual creation?
I absolutely love Tiitus's final rendering of the group of four people. The final highlighting on the tops of the heads, around the caps and the bishop's lines up and down his robe. He certainly created a gorgeous painting!

Cliche's tend to be generated simply from consistant associative & relative practice. In other words any thing done similarly and often enough has the ability of becoming a thematic and when thematics become accepted they become popular ! In other words " Do anything often enough for long enough and you will ultimately be taken seriously " Best wishes Titus - Hope your well and life is spoiling you 🙏

I have been watching all of your videos and am loving them. I noted a recent comment you made about a gallery that wouldn't show you amazing work as they were watercolour and not oils. It's hard to understand how this sort of 'snobbery ' is still happening in this day and age. The purists who ignore beautiful, amazing, quality paintings like yours because they're not made with oils... And yet some very poor paintings are revered because they are made with oils by someone famous. Sorry for my rant, but your painting are incredible regardless of what medium is used 😊

We got to see a lot of you painting this week, thanks Titus. You also let us see your reference picture on your laptop as well, thank you. Do the galleries ask you to paint something different? We know that you like to paint back lit subjects and they are lovely but do the galleries suggest something different maybe? I liked your Deventer watercolour sketches. He is so kind to the whole painting experience . Some people paint like they hate their brushes and the paper or canvas, the day. He looks like he loves his brushes, like he loves the paint and paper and most importantly loves his subject. He appreciates his meditative process. I wonder how long he has owned his brushes for. It is like the brushes are his friend.

Thanks for this. As ever, you give much food for thought. Philosophy rather than recipes. I think that there are too many "rule makers" where watercolour painting is concerned - which is understandable when there are many that hope that this brush or that pigment will magically confer the skill of the painter to the viewer.
( I have had a cry of " it's not fair " when a painting was judged. When digging into this I found what wasn't fair was a painting that had taken several weeks of obsessive work in sketching, studies , thought and execution was somehow seen as " cheating " when compared to something that took an afternoon ! )
I conclude that many people prefer to attribute secret materials or a magical talent as responsible for good work than just putting the hours in, hence the demand for recipes. This said sometimes general hints are helpful. I found what you said about speed being important to your characteristic mark making very useful. If anyone is interested here are mine: always use the biggest brush you can for the task and never underestimate the huge amount of blue there is in everything.
Maybe these will appear in your book !

Titus. Please look for a writer's comments about J.M.W. Turner. The subject is a painting by Turner witnessed by the son of one of his patrons/ client called Walter Fawkes. The young boy watched Turner during a morning when he painted a picture called " A first rate taking in stores " A picture of a large battleship . The boy said it was chaos to begin Turner poured paint, and used his fingernails to scratch etc.. you must read it ! Good luck in finding it, I think you'll love reading it.

I just heard that story earlier today too when viewing a video about Turner. They prefaced it by saying Turner never let people watch him work. This man's story from when he was just a boy was the only description they had of how Turner worked. I thought of Titus' work when I heard it. Only we all get to watch Titus work. Titus is very generous.

@@MsSarah32503 Yes I believe you are right Sarah. I've loved Turner's work for many years. I prefer his watercolours to his oils esp of Venice. Considered crazy in his later years, he was only experimenting, he had made his pile of money through his life ,he could do what he wanted. He used to visit a pgotographer in his late years and discuss light properties. A chap called Jabez. He photographed Turner. I have a copy, imagine that, born in 1775 and we can see what he looked like ! The photos were previously in private hands now available on the net ! 👍

I’ve heard some other comments on this book, However I have listened longer ( meaning the entire commentary) to your perspective on the book. Creativity , from your review of this book Is like maybe how an artist learns how to look so as to know how to see. Noticing all tools that’s in your power to express an idea.

It's interesting to watch you paint city scenes as I paint and sculpt nature. Creating my experience of what I see in all the caos is always a feeling of jumping off or in and continuing to work until I see a result. I feel this way watching you paint. Embracing the chaos has Givin me an interesting freedom to allow creativity through me rather than by me. It's always an experience of teatering on an edge.
Wonderful to see a robust art scene in Holland! I'm in California but may be moving there some day.

I think this is kind of interesting because what I imagine often drives people to finding art videos on UA-cam is a desire to improve or refine their technical skill. And skill development is very formulaic (master studies, repetition, "recipes" of a sort) So I think you, Titus, are in an interesting position as someone who has expressed many times that you aren't trying to create tutorials for how to paint trees and circles and whatever else. I can't help but wonder how else you might feel about being something of an exception on this platform, where your "competitors" (competitors only in terms of attracting viewers) are very focused on technical skill development and you are very focused on the creative process. In fact, I would even go as far as to ask you: what is your (internal) reason for sharing with us?

Lately I’ve experimented with rice paper, inks and watercolor. The other day after doing a “neurogenic amorphous picture”, I turned it upside down and saw a bird. I don’t know whence it came, but I had to bring it into “being”. At what age did you say you learned to do this ? You’re never too old to learn. Inspiration seems elusive, yet compelling. It’s only if you don’t act on it that you get in trouble. Often, the inspiration doesn’t even resemble the finished product (at least in amateur hands). Thank you for sharing your inspirations and processes.

Niemand keek over mn schouder, goddank

In your earlier videos, I saw that you had the book in your studio space. I was curious if you were going to mention it and I'm glad you did. For me this book has been a game changer. Rick emphasizes that what really matters is making something you love to the best of your ability here and now. In podcast interviews he reveals how publishers wanted him to write about the musicians he worked with and tell behind the scenes stories. He knew that was not the book he wanted to write. It took him 8 years to write this book. Now that I've read through it, I keep it by my table and open to random pages to read a paragraph or two and his words always seem to make sense. I also play the audio when I am driving to and from my studio. So thanks for your video. I binged watched all your videos recently! I have one silly question for you, if I may ask. How did you learn to speak english so well?? I, for one, am glad to watch and listen since I don't speak a word of dutch! - watching from Texas! ~Sharon

I agree, recipes are useless and somewhat dangerous. But principles or general strategies are a different pair of shoes. Questions where to set the focus, or how to use the light are interesting and encourage the audience to think along to understand what is happening and why. So they might add to the very good content…

I really value that you are starting to share some philosophical perspectives in these videos, not only talking about your technique. I am not a visual artist myself, but a musician and writer who uses mindfulness. Creativity and wellbeing are so connected and we can't ignore the spiritual dimension of art. I'm interested to see you have books by Deepak Chopra and Ken Wilber also - both masters of healing.
