There is no "New financial package" for Ben Johnson. He was given a raise last year with an updated contract that info has already been disclosed. He said he's staying because he and his family are happy in Detroit and love the organization. Sometimes it is simply Black and White.
He called Amon Ra and gave him the full answer of why before it even came out he was staying. He felt like there was unfinished business and loves everyone on the team.
Washington or whoever simply wants a reason to blame him for their inability to pull him in it would seem.
If he went to Washington he would be held responsible for everything immediately. A ton of pressure.
That Commanders roster is in poor shape and a 37 year old has a lot of work to oversee on the fly.
He may have felt he did not want that pressure until he learns more how to run a team. as a HC.

It’s almost as if the Detroit Lions have built a top 5 culture and were this close to competing for the Lombardi trophy. He’s wants to finish the job. Speaks to him as a person and the culture.

But I think the high asking price was intentional, because it was going to take a lot for him to leave the great situation he has in Detroit. It’s like Ben was saying, “You want me to leave this?? My thoughts too. If you want me to leave this great offense and team then you'll need to pay me an obscene amount of money.
It really feels like this is the case. He's open to the idea of being a HC in the right circumstances, but he wants an overwhelming offer because he likes his current spot.

Ben has youth on his side. I think he's not even 40 yet and he still believe that he has some more learning to do. He knows in this league you have 3 years to turn things around so why rush. He's in a great spot in the D and he will leave for the right team.

Some good points being made in the comments. Truly believe the insane money in the college ranks also plays a roll - Johnson can afford to be picky because he can always jump to a big-time college program and be set for life.
1:00 - in regards to asking price: If you have a skill and you don't need to leave your current job, you're salary ask should be higher. If you need me, you'll have to pay, to Ben Johnson, its of no consequence. He can just stay in Detroit. If you want a home improvement general contractor to come over and give you an estimate and he/she is super busy, he/she will raise the price so its worth it to them. Again, its low risk.

Detroit has the best group of talent offensively, of guys within 4 yrs of experience, with a great OL and very good to great QB in Goff. Hes smart to stay. Why rush out into a HC job with a subpar QB in WAS? Its good to be patient in this case

Amon Ra said in his podcast Ben told him before he told WAS that "His heart was in Detroit" and there was "unfinished business" with the Lions. WAS knew about the $15 mill comment before they ever agreed to meet with him. If the dollar amount spooked them why would they still fly out to meet him? No interview happened, no price was offered, negotiated or declined. Ben not only told WAS he wasn't leaving Detroit but every other team that had/was going to interview him.

Players want to play for Dan Campbell, coaches want to coach with Dan Campbell. Front office, Scouts, and administrative personnel want to work in the Lions Organization. Hell, I bet Janitors want to clean toilets in the…. Ok maybe not that last one…. But you get the idea……
Money is NOT always the issue. Higher consideration is given to: Size of coaching staff? Who selects the coaching staff? Input on final roaster? draft? free agency?

Only time I've heard Florio make sense.
He was down to having two options and I gotta say, I still wouldn't want to go to Washington. Mike does make a good point. Not everyone gets a 2nd chance and you need to make sure it's perfect.
I really think leaving the Lions at this juncture is a mistake. It takes sooo much to get enough of the right people who are all on the same page to start doing something that is special. The Lions are doing that and to abandon ship is leaving a great opportunity to put a pretty significant star on your resume. In coaching years he is very young and he will absolutely get his opportunity when it is the right time.

Im kind of with Florio on this. I think he would shoot himself in the foot going into a situation like Washington thats not a full rebuild but dam close to it. If he was already a HC with like way more experience and ready to take it on from every direction. Coming from an OC to that has so many moving parts where he can just get shafted before he even gets comfortable. Plus I can actually see the Lions getting better next year. Maybe they dont get to the NFC championship game but he can still beef up his resume a little more.

Cuz they're building something special in Detroit, and WAS is far from a slam dunk or perfect fit. Ben will continue to garner interest in the future and he'll do so wearing the ring he helped win in Detroit.
I saw Florio talkinf about the lions and i was hesitant to click it, expecting typical BS, but man I was surprised. He made good points about people potentially damaging Ben Johnson's character, and how that could have a huge impact. They made some speculations as to why he stayed, but that ties into their point of: we dont know why, so why proclaim a reason if you arent sure of it.
He's 37. He doesn't have to be a head coach right now. Especially given how tenuous being a heat coach is. Would he be out of a HC job at, what, 42? Then what? He can stay in Detroit for 3 more years and be in a good place when he's done. If he wins a superbowl... that price is staying high.
Has anyone considered Ben Johnson is simply staying put and waiting for the LIONS and DC to mutually agree to part ways at the end of his contract then take the LIONS HC job?

Crazy thing is that the media is so careful and thoughtful about reporting any salary demands from Ben. When it was Lamar Jackson a league MVP year earlier no one had any issue speculating about salary demands and labeling him as asking for too much. I hear you but the salary cap makes that conversation surrounding Lamar extraordinarily more complex. As a player, you can objectively ask for too much because it handicaps your team’s ability to retain other players

Why does everyone think money runs everything? Obviously there’s a camaraderie in Detroit, and they said themselves, there’s unfinished business. If they have a great year or even make the SB, it’s another feather in his cap, if the offense doesn’t have a good year, I guarantee he still fills a HC spot.

Positive work environment and culture is a powerful factor in employment decisions. It's not always about money. The fact that many are so upset or confused that he didn't pursue the HC position is indicative of the toxic work environment he was looking to avoid.

I think he's staying where he is because he's smart. He's in a good situation to further improve his career rather than go to a dumpster fire with loads of risk. Every year there's new coaches placed, and next to none of them are going to the Super Bowl. There can be an argument about money, but Detroit is setting franchise records right now.

It seems to me this is what happens when you have a job you like and a recruiter comes asking if you are interested in listening to another offer. Sure, I'll listen, but you're going to have to pay me to leave this situation that I really like. I've been there before, I gave them a number big enough that I thought they'd pass and they ended up making an offer. In hindsight, I should have left the money on the table and stayed where I was.

Everyone saying "Oh he just wants to win the SB and then find a new HC job" as if the Lions or ANY team are a lock to win it is just crazy. If your ultimate goal is to be a HC, u take it. Considering both WAS and SEA jobs were available, it says to me that hes just not ready to take on a HC job, whatever his personal reasons are.
It will be difficult to find a starting CB that late in the 1st round who will start immediately in game 1 (lets say Kamari Lassiter)
And a starting reliable placekicker after the 1st round too (lets say Will Reichard)
High priced UFA's for CB and K may NOT be the answer either with 2025 looming they need to save cap space to resign Goff, Sewell, and St. Brown. They simply cannot lose Sewel and St. Brown to UFA in 2025.

The transition from a coordinator to a head coach doesn't seem to be a successful one. I had read how 3 of the coaches in Kansas City were former HCs. I wonder if the salary cap only applies to players and not the coaches themselves.
I love that he's staying with the Lions. But it is a really bizarre decision, no matter how much he may love the situation in Detroit. This is sort of like a guy that is guaranteed to be a top 3 pick in the NBA draft deciding to play another year in college because he loves college. Hundreds of assistant coaches and coordinators go their whole careers working their butts off for their chance at a head coaching job, most of whom will never get that shot, and Ben just says casually turns it down. But good on him, I'm sure the Ford's are paying him bank.

There's a big difference between this and the draft especially in the past when players weren't paid in college. You're talking about $0 to tons of millions for guys that were almost all poverty-stricken. He's going from what 3 million a year to 10 million a year and he's just 37 years old with no cap on how old he will be when he gets out of the game unlike players. I dont get why Rich is so sure abot the Commanders being a dream HC spot, especially for a first time head coach. First year owners usually have to go through trial and error, nobody really knows how they react to adversity (see: Panthers, who a couple of years ago were also titled a dream spot to go to). The infrastructure of the Commanders has also been famously underinvested in, the stadium (and with it, all of its facilities) is falling apart. They just got rid of two important players on their defensive line and are generally lacking in depth and starters all around the board, from Oline to TE, DB, Edge, LB but most importantly QB. It would be quite the (longterm) project to take on this team and nobody knows how much time he will really get to turn it around if immediate success isnt up to par with the ownerships expectations, who probably want to see their new, enormously expensive aquisition flourish.
Maybe Johnson just saw too little security in his only shot to become a successful head coach (hence „asking too much“ which could also mean job security in the sense of guaranteed patience, similar to Campbell in Detroit, who basically got a three year blanco check), or just didnt feel empowered enough to make the descisions he deems crucial to change the commanders path.
HC Meetings go on for days for a reason, they want to figure out any detail that could pose a problem with their personell descisions beforehand, and he most likely figured that he should allow himself to be patient, stay in his own proven successful franchise and wait until another opportunity will surely open itself to him in the coming years.
But thats just my two cents.

He has a great set up in Detroit, there will likely be 8 jobs open at the end of the next season, he has unfinished business in Detroit, and maybe he just isn't ready to be a HC, the guy has only been an OC for 2 seasons...He called Amon Ra St Brown and told him he was coming back because of unfinished business.
The framing is wrong. It shouldn't be "why does this guy want so much" and instead be "why doesn't a 5 billion dollar organization think a top upcoming coach is worth 15mil"?
Here is my take: Tell me why "the Commanders is an attractive gig" to Ben Johnson. You say, they have lots of money, and the #2 overall pick so, you can build the team you want. Ok, but the Lions are already built for him. The Lions have the talent to win games and make another deep playoff run. The Lions have an NFL tested quarterback that he works very well with. The Lions have an offensive line that can protect Goff and let Johnson be creative and run the plays that fit his offense.
Do the Commanders have that? Certainly, they might, one day, in the future. But Ben Johnson has done A LOT of losing with the Dolphins and the Lions. Does he want to do more? So, asking Ben Johnson to walk away from his current situation, one where I am sure he has A LOT of input and freedom in addition to proven young talent, to a situation which is definitely more risky and may not have those same freedoms, I dont call that "attractive".
The man loves his current job. Being in a great culture with a great offense might not be worth a few million extra dollars a year to him(probably about a million after taxes)
