I thought this was a very informative video for teachers (new teachers especially) for ideas for different reading strategies. I especially like the readers theater because I have seen it used multiple times and students really seem to enjoy it.

Video "Teaching Reading" (by Christine D'Amico) explains why students need systematic phonics and, from what I know, is much more helpful, especially if kids are having trouble with reading.

Rigorous early years phonics teaching, if it were the norm, would virtually banish illiteracy. It is unlikely to become the norm any time soon. Children failed by inappropriate early years teaching can nevertheless acquire good literacy skills as long as teachers decline to be constrained on the question of HOW letter/sound correspondences are internalised. Consider the views of children who learned them perceptually rather than ritually by Googling UA-cam Perceptual Learning in Action.

Basically, we have a big problem in our schools. We are having kids run a marathon as in this work here without any training whatsoever in proper reading, writing and spelling instruction, which obviously MUST be in place before students can be asked to do this work. Parents should know that this instruction is implicit or constructivist, notice that there is no instruction on learning to read in this video.
