Are Sliders And Carousels Good Or Bad In Web Design?

  • Sliders, or as I like to call them, interactable ghost towns, are common in websites, especially ones built with WordPress because there so easy to add. But if they’re so modern and common, they have to be a good thing right?
    Let's talk about them!

    So, they are useful in a gallery section because there, people care enough to click through it.
    Love your straight forward way of explaining it ;)

    I don't really comment on videos, but your ending part was so hilarious, I had to play it twice to be sure I didn't hear wrong 🤣🤣🤣

    Finally someone said publicly something that I had in mind for years. And in a clear-cut and straight to te point way too!
    Now please do the same with my other pet peeve: endless scrolling.
    But there's one thing I have to nitpick, at 01:48 - if you think that people "don't just do that" (scrolling through pages), then let me introduce you to a typical user of Facebook or Twitter - the very places where this endless scrolling disease came from in the first place :q People can scroll through these endless walls for hours, mindlessly (because one has to be mindless in order to do that and not commit self-destruction immediately :q )

      Well on twitter and facebook the content is not static, it changes over time, so by scrolling down we know there will be new content, as for a website that's hardly the case.

    Great video! it reminded me a video from nngroup, is hard sometimes to give up on pretty for one useful and statistical better interface but we should all design for the user not to our taste.

    It was fun when you made the one page "slider"! I concur with your opinion about sliders. The only sites I put up with it are the Korean cosmetic supplier's websites, but only because they use it for the events, Agh so annoying. Still, I scroll down and click on the individual promotion pages. Bonus- their sliders are always on fast auto! No time to look at it, no time to read and it's hard to know what the promotional event is about.

    Sliders, yes they slow down a site by a lot. I do need to use them on my photography portfolio page though. On my site under construction I have a two image slider in a 50% text showing the idea of two types of tours offered. I don't expect or want anyone to click on those. I could add a second container and have two different blocks expressing that one idea. Not sure what is better; one container with the idea conveyed with two images (no navigation, no pagination nothing) or two containers which conveys one idea?

    Timeless, evergreen words of wisdom and truth. Nothing is more obnoxious than shit animating while I'm trying to read something on the page. Pages filled with animated gifs are almost as bad.

    I completely agree in principle. I think the last study that you used for your position is very weak though. An increase in conversion in that example more than likely was not due to a carousel being on the webpage, but more importantly the placement caused most of the product info to push past the fold. This is not a direct effect of the slider being present on the page, but more so a poor flow of section placement on the designer's part. (e.g. highlighting the products a user more than likely came to the website for) I only brought this up because you reiterated the point again in your summary. It lacked context.
    Overall, I think you made a good argument by giving both perspectives though.

      Agreed. I wish I waited 7 months to make this video because my opinion on sliders is alot more tame now. Everything does indicate they arent the best option UX wise, but there are situations where they actually make sense and do add value. I will probably revisit the video in the future!

      @@thewebsitearchitect Your videos are clear cut and you add your stance very clearly, I like it. Keep it up, I'll keep a lookout for your updated thoughts on sliders in the future. All the best.

      Not only that, but "facts and figures" usually mean jack shit to people who base their judgement on "because it looks cool" or "because everyone does it" anyway.

    "SOMETHINGS NOT RIGHT HERE"... Is it the missing apostrophe in the word "SOMETHINGS" in the thumbnail slide? Did I guess correctly?

    Great info…very nice video….voice….n pictures….🙏🌺🙏🌺….But the title says about Carousal as well…that could be very narrow line included a slogan or whatever just a part of one of folds or sections…. You didn’t mention about it at all in your video….will be nice if you add it😉👍🏻

    So the one caveat "products photos on a product page"... What if your product is an event venue? Would an image only non-automatic slider be ok? Otherwise, thinking I'll just do one image acting as a link to a gallery page.

    • @TrentonGauthier
      @TrentonGauthier 2 роки тому

      I'm worried that a gallery page would be a dead-end that fails to convert. I'd rather stick a curated subset of those images on the homepage and then get visitors to scroll past and sort themselves into one of my funnels (we're a hotel, wedding venue, general venue, and cafe so sorting is the primary objective of the homepage).

    People criticize sliders based on a wrong assumption that all the slides in a slider should be seen by everyone that visits the website. Slider is not used with that purpose.
    Slides in a slider is an "extra", not "a must see". You use a slider when you don't have the luxury of showing 3-4 slides of similar content on top of each other because that would impact the scroll-depth performance. Yes, the content of the slides will be visible to more people but the rest of the page won't be.
    Usually a webpage is not consist of a single section. There are multiple sections on a single webpage and if you keep one section very long just to show the entire content, people won't see the other sections. But you also wouldn't want to loose the chance of showing more of the similar content if the user demands that. Slider is a great way to give the user the opportunity to see more of a similar content without taking so much space. If the user is interested in that particular section, they would interact and see more of it. If not, they would scroll to the next one and that wouldn't make the slide less useful.
    As simple as that.

      I agree some sliders can give that "extra" bit of value in case people want it, but unfronatetly a lot of people just don't use them like that. They slap important content in there just because it looks cleaner or more organized to them, which makes the content read less than if it were on the page in a different layout. I do think sliders can be useful for the exact reasons you say, but I believe its a bad outlook to use them for that reason. If your content is important enough to put on the page, it shouldn't be hidden away behind a slider.

    • @bonbonpony
      @bonbonpony 2 роки тому +1

      If that were true, people wouldn't put the damn slider right in the top of their websites, taking 100% of space above the fold, or - more worsely - building their websites entirely around a slider :q I can bear a slider only on one situation: if it provides some optional, not-so-important additional information somewhere in the middle of the page, e.g. customers' testimonials, promoted products, or some other less important stuff. But not when the scroller is all that there is.

    none of this sounds like technical advice but instead you just hating on sliders.
    Very, very, not helpful.
    You only addressed full screen hero section sliders, said nothing about where else they (sliders) could be used better.
    What if you use a slider with just 2 or 3 slides in a different section of the page i.e. client reviews or testimonials?
    Please do enlighten us with a video giving further info. Thank you

    Sliders are annoying asf I'm a web developer I wanna punch my clients face to a pulp when they ask for a slider and want the site to be optimized at the same time while using fucking big ass images
