  • This is a custom DIY all aluminum light weight rack mount awning for car or truck camping. This detailed video will give you some good ideas to perfect your own design. My awning is for my Front Runner Load Bars on my 3rd Gen Tacoma. I have tried to cover it all in this video, but if you have any questions or comments please comment below. The awning cost is roughly under $150 all in. Thanks for watching and stay safe out there. TbT. #diycamper #awning #truckcamping

    This is by far one of the best DIY awning videos I have seen. You make all of this look really easy. Thank you for this video.

      Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. It came out pretty good, we’re happy with it. I think may try a wrap around 270 degree one next, but it will be pretty far down road. I’m currently building (filming) a camper build for my Tacoma. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.

    The first video I watched was your walk around of your truck where you raised the roof. The first thing I noticed was this tarp. Thanks for explaining it. I would have liked a more detailed explanation. Thanks.

    That came out nice. Nice job sewing the case with clean seams and a heavy-duty zipper. And, you're welcome for the use of my machine.

    Dude I am kind of blown away with how good this looks! I am looking to get into car camping with my new Subaru Crosstrek. Looking to do half my gear ready-bought, and the other half DIY. I agree with the past comments that this is by far the cleanest looking DIY Awning I’ve seen on YT. Well done! Thank you for the inspiration 🙏

      Thanks man. It was a fun build. It works well too. I think you could easily make this design work for a Crosstrek, its pretty universal. Thanks for the great comment and I’m glad it inspires you. Stay safe out there. Thanks for watching. TbT.

    As someone who always wanted to build stuff, and for a long time didn't have any tools to do so, I'm very impressed by how this ultimately turned out. Also nice job on jumping into learning new skills (sewing). I remember having a new found appreciation for straight seams after my first few sewing attempts.

    Very cool project. I want to build something like this for the truck camper I am currently restoring, and you gave me some great ideas. Also digging the camper build you are doing.

      Thanks for watching. The awning works great. I think I may modify this one or make another one the wraps are of the back for the camper build. Long way to go on the camper before I do that, but I think it would be a good addition. Good luck with your build. TbT

    Love the design - solid build. How thick is the aluminum c-channel?

    • @TravelingbyTacoma
      @TravelingbyTacoma  3 роки тому +1

      It is 3/16" C channel. It is plenty stiff, but we went on a hike a few weeks back and left the awning out...wind came up heavy while we were out, the anchors pulled out of the sand. Came back to a slightly bent awning, but no major damage. I was able to easily bend the C channel back into shape and close the awning. Straightened it all out at home and good as new now. That being said, maybe one size up 1/4" wall C channel would be better for that scenario. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay safe out there. TbT

    My friend to take this the wrong way but you were using the grinder disc on the wrong side the conic side should be sticking out and not inside, Your videos ideas are great and thank you for it but please don't use grinder disc on wrong side you can easily get hurt and end losing fingers.
    great video !!

    All in all, how much did it cost you (minus the parts you had laying around)?

    • @TravelingbyTacoma
      @TravelingbyTacoma  3 роки тому

      About $140. Tarp $20, hardware and aluminum (c channel and blue arms) $50, black legs $40 bag material and zipper $25 and a few miscellaneous items like nuts and washers. I had the legs and the feet materials as well as the black spacers left over from a few TV wall mounts. Thanks for watching. Stay safe out there. TbT.

    Can you build a solar awning?

    • @TravelingbyTacoma
      @TravelingbyTacoma  2 роки тому +1

      I’m sure it could be done, but I think there are better options for solar since you’ll find you don’t always deploy the awning in every situation. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay safe out there. TbT.

      It weighs right around 30 pounds - awning, legs, feet all in.
