Thank you Jim and Jim, this is exactly the information I needed. I think this is the only place on the internet, that I could find information on removing the Vanagon's sliding door in one piece. All other references to removing the sliding door, required the removal of the brackets that hold the rollers / bearings, leading to possible mis-alignment of the door. This video was of tremendous help! [I counted 3 Vanagons in the video, were there more? :) ]

1:44 - that is what I missed.... need to pay attention, I had to take the upper and lower rollers off to get the damaged door out, it was pushed about 3 inches right under the window in the middle... and I am struggling here trying to get it back on, THANKS for posting !

great vid!but is the a way to adjust how the door is sitting? i mean mine has dropped a few cm's. still closes but the lines dont match up from bodywork to door.

Yes. On the rear bracket that holds the roller mechanism, there are adjustments by loosening the bracket from the door and then retightening in the proper position. Same up front - can be adjusted by moving the door-to-bracket alignment for both up/down and in/out. Good luck.

Unrelated, sort of, but how did you black out the whole sliding window? Did you disassemble the window and paint the silver bits black, or is there an easier way? Really helpful video btw, I have new sliding door rubber waiting to be installed and I figured it would be a much bigger pain in the ass to remove the door!

For USA Vanagons... Beginning in 1989 VW switched to black anodized sliding window frames and also dropped the fake chrome inserts in the other windows. Certain 1988 models like this too.
