Obviously you two guys did not simply mess around with this thing and make a video in a few minutes. You truly got to know the amp and learned what works for you on every front. Product knowledge is key, and you went above and beyond here...Excellent demo and review. Thank you
"Less than perfect playing" *Proceeds to shred tf out of the guitar* 😂❤🔥 I love both these guys!
Thanks for showing a proper demonstration and not just trying to chug on this thing.
just got one tonight. Very impressed. Thanks for the demo.
I have the Gen 1 Katana 100 1x12 and it's just unreal. What you get for the money is amazing, and it sounds good in every mode, clean, crunchy, high or low reverb, or just straight 80's hair metal.
Mitch Gallagher is the reason i subscribed to Sweetwater's channel... He reviews gear from the musician's stand point, not just a standard riff vid, to sell stuff... It's great that Nick is there as well. His humor, & great chops, make for an interesting flipside to Mitch's style of play... Another Great Sweetwateer demo !!!!
Thanks for watching, Randy! We appreciate the kind words. 😊
Yeah I appreciate their humor too and actual musician so they know what we’re all looking for, Tone these have got some very nice options and when you compare the cost to some of the expensive tube amps and some are getting almost 10 times the cost the question is can my little pea brain tell the difference lol probably not unless I was in a huge concert hall with a fully cranked Marshall or something. The way they built for a transistor amp is really quite hard to believe especially the way they emulated the power switch 5 watt 50 watt like they try to do on the tube amps now tells me that is really impressive they put a lot of thought into this And Boss had the experience with them cube amps for decades of having good sound
Only Mitch can be Mitch! My Christmas gift this year Going for head. Many thanks to both of you for all you have given us.
Fantastic video and review / demo! Sounded absolutely fantastic! I love how Nick is so humble, like he's "not a good player" : ) For those who don't know, as for someone who grew up on "Grim Reaper",...Nick can DEFINITELY play, and play WELL. : ) Absolutely fantastic video once again! Loved every minute of it!
Loved the demo/review 🤘 excellent job guys
I love how this beast has a brown sound mode so I can unleash (or try) my inner Van Halen
Great review! The Mk ll is now on my list to buy. Such a great amp!
These guys are the best!!! 🤘🏻🎸🎼
Yep, I needs this thing!!!
"result"..! good my brother, damn good 👍
Called my rep Simon and my 100 MkII will be here tomorrow! Thanks for the review!
Great demo! Thanks.
Sweetwater really is evolving their content in a great way, Congrats, guys!
Gotta love these two guys
Looks great guys!
I was wondering if Boss was coming out with an upgraded and they did. The price dropped as well. I'm going to get one for sure.
Really great review of the Katana, guys!
Great demo guys. 10:00 did it for me - if it's that easy to dial in and save to a channel, there's nothing more to think about. Even the computer interface looks childishly easy to use, so well done BOSS.
When I get the extra cash, I do believe I've found my amp! Thank you for this video. Cheers!
Great video, thanks!
Excellent playing nick
This is the best review of the Katana mkii so far. You present all the important and small details, and not in a boring kind of review. Thank you. Keep it up.
You good aaf. Dont put yourself down. Wow man wow.
I'm glad they had a metal guy do the demo as well, usually on these videos it's mostly blues guys.
Lance37a I’m on the opposite side of this spectrum. I really don’t like metal hahaha. To each their own.
I’m just glad that an instrument like guitar can join such different genres.
I’m just rambling and in a good mood today. Carry on lol
@@marcobeltran7218 I'm not really a metal guy either, I just like to hear different kinds of playing through the amp.
Thanks for this video I just got the 2X 12 100 W And I’m going to buy a second one at the end of the month with a peddle and a couple of padded covers. Very impressive package I feel this can work as a valuable tool in a home studio I have a Kerry King Marshal for that too But this is portable by myself And with a laptop or a phone man got some serious options. Generally I try to keep it simple I will probably pick anywhere from 5 to 15 favorites and that will be it for ease of use ability without a phone book to remember everything LOL
Just ordered my first guitar amp the katana mk2 100 and the GF-HC effects for gently used for $400,, hope I got a deal and I can figure out how to properly use it .. very excited nonetheless
Just swapped my Fender Mustang GT100 for this Boss and glad I did. This is a much nicer amp!!! Good video, nice demo guys!!
Great together you guys have 200 years!
No one has yet made a demo video of the new Stereo Expand feature, using two identical MK2 amps. Could you please do one? I'm curious of how a live stereo Katana rig would sound and function, especially with different choruses, delays, reverbs, etc...
Very nice. 100w 2x12’s Done. 👍😎
Hi is there any vids on the 12x2 comparing 12x1 cheers from OZ.
Just ordered the MKII 100 watt, will it replace my Tube gear ??? Probably not, it will however be a fun tool to use for my guitar sound.
As usual Sweetwater sales guys are great !
Sounds like dude on the right was playing "Saturday in the Park" at one point.
“I’m breaking my Piggy Bank tonight…” ) 😄 hahaha 🤗
Great demo, gents. No doubt these amps offer amazing bang for the buck. Although, there's something about the overdriven tones that sounds harsh, or even brittle. I was *this* close to buying a Mk1 100-watt combo, but opted instead to get a used Tech 21 Trademark 60 and running pedals into the clean channel. After this demo, I'm kind of in the same boat. Hopefully I can get a chance to actually plug into one of these and make the call.
You need to use the tone studio to tame the ice picky tone of these amps
Jack Narcotta Yea. You have to use the tone studio trust me. I have a great metal tone right now, sounds great with me Duncan loaded Epiphone Les Paul Custom
I think about that myself but using the foot pedal and onboard seems less messy that individual pedals tuff call but im going try 100watt 1x12. Price at 340 is 👍
💯🖤👌Wow
Looks like you play in a death core band🤘
Hard to believe this guy was in Grim Reaper.
In the past I've found that digital amps hate to have the guitar volume knob at anything less that wide open and that a pedal is required to control volume. Is that still the case?
“And if it sounds bad , is San not my hand … but Mitch’s ..” hahaha 😂
Please do a review of the Katana Artist 100 MkII...the best just got better! And, BTW, here's a tip...turn the Master Volume all the way up...and use the volume control, next to the gain, to adjust your volume. It utilizes class A/B power, and it gets really dynamic and it makes a huge difference. Plus TONS of upgrades and features on the ARTIST MKII, and the WAZA speaker!
Got the MK2 100 and my only complaint is that the basically must have foot switch is an "option" rather than being included with the amp. Sold as a "gigabel" amp but when playing live who can run to the amp to change channels in the middle of a tune? However, for tinkering in the living room it is great out of the box.
I want the amp and that leather jacket.
Will this rival the H&K BS200 floor?
Hey Folks at Sweetwater really liked your video on the katana, thinking about getting one but a couple questions though , how does this amplifier work in an R&B Neo-Soul , Blues / Gospel kind of feel.
Hi, Carlton. The nice thing about the Katana amps is they have a wide range of tones and gain levels. For what you're describing, it would be able to handle that well.
Thanks for your interest!

I love it, just sucks I that I just bought the mk1 this past July
Got mine about 3 years back
Apparently the mark 1s will get a v4 update that basically makes them into mark 2s in December.
Doug E. Fletch source?
Great demo. I cant decide between mk2 or artist. Someone help.
Will the MK. III have an FX FX FX?
I just got this amp last week (Katana 50 mk2). Love it! But I'm having trouble trying to access the 3rd and 4th channels. I have the Boss FS-6 pedal. Any thoughts to help me out?
Hello, Dan! Make sure you're setting both sides of the pedal to latching and are also using a single TRS cable. Thanks for the interest, hope that helps! Give me a ring if you have questions.

@@sweetwater that was it! Thanks for the tip.
quick question please. thinking of changing from my dsl40 to the mk2. not sure if i need the the 50watt 1×12 or the 100watt 1×12. my main concern is that i was using a be-od pedal on my clean channel of dsl and it barely keeps up for stage volume. playing std coverband stuff 80s thrown in at local bars. any feedback is appreciated on size amp needed. Thank you
Great question! Even the 100W Boss Katana will not be as loud as your DSL40. Wattage in solid state/digital amps does not convert proportionally to wattage in tube amps in terms of loudness. If you would like some recommendations on what amp to get, please give us a call and we can go into more detail on what will be best for your specific needs. Thanks!

Does this amp come with a technician to operate it while I just jam?
Concentric knobs!
Nick should play a Grim Reaper riff.🤘🤘🤘
sithboricua I’m going to guess that Nick may deliberately stay away from those. I wish he would play them!
Even though the new model has the ability to run booster and mod separately along with fx delay and reverb whilst in app old one can only do booster/mod fx delay and reverb the problem is that you can't move booster behind mod and that's important so boss need to add that and I'very lobbying boss to do this for the air via app
And if they won't seperate out booster from mod on air and have a pre and post mod button then they need to add the booster menu as a secondary menu to fx control in app like delay2 is reachable via reverb menu as a secondary menu.
Then you can put wah etc ahead of distortion fuzz etc
I agree. Compressor makes no sense after drive for me.
I haven't tried, but can't this be done in the Tone Studio software?
So I just got my first boss katana mk2 50 and all it comes with is a power cord. Do I need a specific USB cable to access the boss studio? I’m definitely getting that foot switch to help but I’d like to tweak my sounds more
I wonder how reliable they are and build quality.
Thank you for the video, it is great. I would like to see a comparison btw. the MK2 and the artist. Which one sounds better?
Don't Forget The Issue of "Odd & Even" Harmonics
Can it really sound that much better than the first Katana?? I have the 50 and I have strong doubts from what I have seen and heard so far. The new version looks to be just more bells and whistles, not BETTER sound.
What happen when you adjust the power scale? They sound the same to me whether they are in 25W or 50W.
I like the demo, can you tell me what acoustic guitar you are using and where to purchase one?
looks like a yamaha
Yamaha silent guitar I believe
How much did your guitars cost? 4 times, 5 times the cost of the amps? More?
It won't replace any tube amp but its cool to record or for light weight grab and go.Is the artist a lot better than the mkii 100??????? I can still take mine back.
Hey, that guy’s guitar is backwards.
Trolling aside, where's the Mark II version of the Artist? Also, we're almost in 2020, and still no Bluetooth or mobile connectivity. Plugging in with a USB cable is okay with me, but Boss needs to be aware that many people don't even own a computer anymore, so iOS and Android support are important.
The Artists will probably be out in a year or so. I agree with Bluetooth. If Yamaha can do it with the Thr's, Boss could do it with the Katana's.
there is bluetooth support with the katana air wireless amp head but that is only mark 1 so far like the artist
I agree. I was just about to mention that they should have added Bluetooth/wireless connectivity to at least edit tones.
The air is the same spec as the katana version 3 with the cab resonance 4 effects at once etc etc .I wouldn't have bought a katana if they hadn't made the air it was the artist features with the stereo and Bluetooth and wireless that made the air something I would buy. I just add 2 x frfr speakers and use it as a gigging head when not at home.
Without wireless and Bluetooth not moved forward enough.
The air Just needs separated booster menu and able to move it to before or after mod and it would be perfect.
Looking out for either update or mk2 air
Don't use any other amp
I really wonder who doesn’t have a computer nowadays?
TBH, I'd be perfectly fine with 'only' 50 watts, so I'm disappointed Boss opted to 'cheap out' by not having the same number of presets on the 50-watt as the 100-watters. IMO, only two presets available was never enough. [edit] I'd have also appreciated finally having a built-in tuner added somehow.
Past that, great demo and explanation of the amp line as usual, and the sounds are great.
"The panel real estate is the same size" not true, otherwise they'd be able to fit a presence knob as well.
blue Oops. You’re right there. I stand corrected. That 50 watter’s shot went by pretty fast so I guess I must have been checking the wrong stills. (I’ll edit that error out so as to not confuse anyone.)
But I’ll still say that two presets don’t seem enough for an improved model. IME and IMO, that is.
They are in the business of making money, don't be dumb
Imagine next upgraded Boss Katana mkiii. The only thing that's missing is tube emulation
I remember it wasnt long ago that almost everybody hates everything that boss makes, I'm glad to say that I live in a time were boss transitioned from a hated brand to eveyrbody's favorite
Everyone hated the boss metal zone, that's about it. Boss was never a hated company
Boss analog OverDrive pedals are of the best!!! OD1 OS2 SD1 OD3 OD2 and they are immortal. My OD1 is 40years old now.
I hated the metalzone at least until I used it on a drum machine .........
I'm curious about the stereo input. Surely, you can use it with any amp, right? Not just another Katana? I have the Kt50, but I may have to sell it to get one of these. The info is not clear, on that.
you mean the stereo "output" thing, I think that, from what Ryan from 60 cycle hum read in the manual, when you plug the line out and toggle the stereo option it turns the line into the "left signal" and you can plug it on another katana/powered speaker/power amp+cab.
so when you toggle the stereo on you have
Katana 1 pre amp> stereo divider:
R(mono) signal> katana 1 power section > Katana 1 Speaker
L(Stereo) signal> Katana 1 lineout jack > cable > chosen power amp>speaker
with the mkII having a power amp in and being cheap and having a power amp in it would be an obvious choice of being your stereo power amp/speaker combo.
@@GabrielGAS1201 Yeah, I'll watch that. From the Boss manual, it implies that you need another K2. But that doesn't seem right, to me. I have a kt50, which I might be able to keep, if it works. That is really the best new feature, to me, other than the dual knobs. Thanks, for the info.
The best solid state amps ever made IMHO
Well, ya can't forget the Roland JC120 and HH IC100.
@@gmmakesmehurl also the Lab Series L5.
Those are good, but this is by far the most versatile.
I'm a Fender Mustang GT200 devotee myself. Talk about versatility and sound quality.
Versatile, especially if you're into Fender amps. Sound quality depends on who you're asking. Not a huge fan of how the lower-end ones sound compared to the Katanas but I haven't tried any of the higher-watt ones.
I have the Mkii just got it I'm having a problem downloading the tone studio and my brown sound sucks don't understand why it sounds so different on the videos
Can a tone you create using the software be saved to a channel on the amp so you can access it without laptop?
Gerry Attrik yes
Where's the butterscotch tele?
Which desktop amp is the best? Yamaha THR30 II or Boss Katana 100 MkII???? Do a review please!
Only one is a desktop amp.
I have just bought an Artist 100W Combo amp and haven't even used it yet but can't return it for a full refund. I need to know if the Mk2 (particularly the 2X12 Combo) is better than the Artist Mk1?? No-one seems to be talking about how it compares to the Artist. It's cheaper than what I paid and I'm thinking I should have got that instead - If I'd known about the Mk2 coming out, I would have waited and got the Mk2. Someone said the speakers haven't been upgraded on the Mk2, so does that mean my Artist mk1 is still better? Which one would you choose? Would you still choose the Artist Mk1 over the Mk2?
No, you're fine. There's nothing inherently better about the 1st gen compared to the 2nd gen. Same technology (for the most part), more features.
Artist is supposed to have the better speaker. Mk2 has some great features but yours should still be the better amp.
Why did they change the layout of the software? The old format made more sense.
Someone please help! So, modeling the tube and power amps makes the 50 watt Katana as loud as a 50 watt tube amp or as loud as a 50 watt solid state???
Hi, Josue! Thanks for your message, hope you're well and safe.
The short answer is yes. The 1x12 is loud, the 2x12 is louder. Depending on which amp (tube or solid state) you compare the Katana to, it compares favorable to either. Not knowing your particular scenario, I can't advise further. You're welcome to contact us direct for more.

Do i need an audio interface to use the Boss Studio software on PC ?
Hello, great question! You do not need an audio interface to use the Katana with the studio software - you can just connect it to your computer via USB.
Thanks!

I have a question for whoever can answer.. I live in an apartment and the trouble I have is my Marshall DSL 40c is too loud. If I push the tubes enough to get that good Marshall tube tone it is way too loud and if I turn it down to a bedroom volume I don’t get that awesome tube tone.
I have considered getting the Katana MK2 and selling the Marshall or putting a good attenuator on the Marshall tube amp. I am unsure which would be a better option. I personally never heard a solid state amp that ever sounded as good as a tube amp so I am concerned about that. As for effects I do have a Line 6 Helix and Joe Satriani Vox pedals. I also have 2 Presonus Studio Monitors.
In my current setup am I better off getting the new Katana or putting an attenuator on my Marshall DSL 40c?
Hi, Leviathon. There isn't a right or wrong there. The Katana sounds great and can get great sounds at pretty much any volume level. That being said, since you already have the Marshall, an attenuator would make a lot of sense. That way you get to keep using your tube amp, and can get it at the volume levels you need.
Thanks for your interest!

Good Attenuator is the price of a Katana
Get the katana because it has a built in attenuator that goes down to half a watt so it's perfect for an apartment and you could even use it at a small gig if you need it to
Which model Schechter is Nick using?
Schecter Reaper-6 FR. It was this model, amigo: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Reap6FRCBL--schecter-reaper-6-fr-left-handed-satin-charcoal-burst
Does this have a foot switch you can buy seperate?
Hey, Murph! Thanks for reaching out. Several Boss foot switches could work with the Katana MKII, but the GA-FC gives you the most control and it's what is recommended. The GA-FC also allows you to connect additional expression pedals.

The only exception is the 50 watt version, which works with the FS-6 switch.

The,fifty is cheaper than a lot of boutique fx pedals. Can do a job for me on quieter gigs and be connected to a pa if needed. Footswitch takes it to around three hundred English pounds. Bargain.
Have you heard one of these on 50 watts?? You won't need a pa!
Which brand is Nick bowcott guitar ?
Schecter.
Schecter has put some nice looking lefties out this year!
How well does this take a pedal board?
Hi, Mike. The Katana does pretty well with pedals, especially for a solid state amp at that price point. That being said, it is mostly designed to use the built in sounds and effects. If you're wanting something that will act as a pedal platform, I would probably check out some of the smaller tube amp offerings. The Fender Blues Jr, Bugera V22, or Vox AC4 would all be good options to check out.

@@mitchgallagher27554 years later… i was wondering how nobody caught that casual lick you played in there
Just sold my MkII 100 W 1x12 after 4 months. Not that it wasn't amazing, I just could never get a proper live room sound with it. Something was always missing. My sound needs tubes, I guess. And such modeling is wasted on my simple needs. Back to my Peavey Classic 50 4x10.
Roland needs to address the connection failure on Mac OS. Amp will not connect and "switch from slave mode to normal" appears. There are thousands of unanswered posts out there and they offer no solution other than what's in the manual, which does no good. I got the MK2 100W head with a 2X12 cabinet and now cannot edit anything through Tone Studio on Mac.
At 12:40 it sounds like shedding skin from Pantera if it’s nots lol
Got a question; can you set all your sounds up then download them to the footswitch so you can play live and just hit the button you need for that song? An example would be playing a song that starts off with a nice clean tone (think Metallica Fade to Black) then during the song you need to switch to a heavy tone, then switch back to clean and a nice lead tone towards the end. Can the Katana handle this and if you are using 3 different sounds for just 1 song, then how many different sounds can you program? You could have 12 to 20 songs for 1 gig so how can you make this happen with something like the Katana as opposed to say a Helix. Thanks and cheers.
you dont download them to the footswitch, but you control the amp via the footswitch. you basically have 9 saved tones to work with. 8 channels and the panel. Each of those have their own setting that you can toggle. So if you have channel 1 set to clean, you can turn on and off delay, overdrive, chorus, etc.
so while you dont have 20 separate channels, you can easily get 20 separate sounds if you manage the effects well. ive done this with the mk1 katana. Right now im debating waiting for an artist update or moving to the mk2
@@wildcat714 thanks for the info... I was debating between this or a Helix type of thing. I just wanted to have saved a few sounds (including effects) to be accessed or saved per button. So are you saying i could only toggle amp types THEN i would have to toggle the effects separately? Cheers.
@@titmusspaultpaul5 you have 2 banks of 4 patches...this patches can have effects that don't trigger always.
for example you can program your clean to be say the fender-ish clean with some reverb. so you save this as you channel 1-A. But you have one song that, say the intro, need some chorus on top of that base clean. You can leave a chorus pedal that is off but when you are playing his intro you can press the effects button on the controller, turn the chorus on to play the intro, and go back to the channel selection, to have your rythm patch activated when is time.
It's definetly not as crazy powerful as the helix that you can 100% change the whole chain a thousand times per song.
You have 4 sounds per bank (2 banks), which are default (you can leave desired effects on) and have some off in case you need).
edit. also you can hook up a pedal to do tap tempo and a expression that is totally assignable per patch.
Can’t watch I’m at work, did they make the noise gate accessible without needing a laptop? If not that’s a major failure
Doesn't look like it
If you really want to dig into controlling the parameters of every effect you're going to be plugging it into a computer anyway
I don’t see what the big deal is anyway. When I used my Katana as a main amp I just set
the noise gate once for each preset and left it like that.
If the effect is available you should be able to access it without a laptop, I’m sorry but that’s a major failure, not every kid that buys this will have a laptop to use
@@TheMetalhead0283 How are you supposed to access like 55 different effects just from the amp itself? You pay like $250 for the amp, it can't have it all. Nearly every household has a computer so if you don't have that I don't know what to tell you.
