The question i have. Are you still using this machine. Or how long did you use it. Would you buy it again. I bought a used one 2 1/2 years ago never used it. Goi g to try it.
hello, a question, but do you use lightburn software because it is the only way to communicate with the laser machine? are there other software that can communicate with the laser? nice video compliments
That tape is for aligning your beams. You need to make sure beam is in line and coincident all around the travel of the machine. It is not electrical tape nor is it to seal the water tubes
No, it is not. It is neither for aligning, or sealing the water tubes. Nor is it electrical tape. If you look at it closer, you will see it is thin double sided tape. It is for sealing the exhaust tube!!!! One of the manuals I have had for these even states as much. But yes, you sort of made a mistake buying this machine. You should have just purchased one of the larger red/black ones with Ruida controller. You do not even need to use LightBurn with the Ruida. RDWorks is absolutely fine, and has a lot more features than LightBurn.
Yes, I would say so. I wasted $4k and the machine never passed FDA inspection due to a technicality - machine was sent back. Based on that and other issues I've discovered after the fact. Best not buying direct from China.
That splitter thing you didn't know what was for is just a thing that comes with the air pump, when I built my laser i bought a similar pump and that's what came with it, I just threw it away
yes indeed, it's an aquarium air pump: that's a splitter to spread the air bubbles a bit in an aquarium. you can attach multiple thin tubes if you want or just put it in the water as it is.
Its not the controller on these cheap machines which is the issue its the cheap co2 narrow beam 50w laser tube :-( Its all about gearing or beam convergence if your serious about cutting any reasonable thickness perspex or mdf I have another machine now which still has all the same cheap chinese tube mirrors and lenses however the 80w tube in this machine has a larger diameter beam with a 2:1 stepped down XY belt resolution which makes so much difference :-) Can cut with less wattage on the 80w machine through the same material using a faster feedrate than the small 50w machine
Sure it's a cheap machine, but it's a good "starter" system. You can pretty easily retrofit it with a better laser, laser control, stepper motors or CNC control for not a lot of money. The basic machine is pretty sound though. I've retrofitted mine (same system as the one in the video) with new optics (3 new bending mirrors and a brand new cutting lens) and it made a huge difference. Was able to get a smaller focused beam and could cut the same material/thickness with about 10-12% less power at the same feedrate.
Sorry but I find it quite annoying that people keep referring to these lasers as “Chinese” Lasers. I’m sure you already know that most everything you use, from clothing to computer are made in China, or has a part that’s made there. Who F-ing cares if it’s from China or made in someone’s back yard in Tijuana, so long as it’s good quality and works. The “made in china” slur Is not relevant in todays culture. When the US consumer market becomes predominantly made in the USA, then saying “made in china” might have some relevance.
Hello.. I have similar Laser engraving machine. I have problem last few days with cutting acryl glass and with plywood... It didn't cut files that it cut a day before. His puls dot is ok, It pass through material, but in files doesn't. Can you help me what to do? I have allignment mirrors and changed a water and clean lens. And I have no ideas anymore what to do.
Oh my goodness, all that sawdust, on the tray, in the lens, a literal house fire waiting to not be covered by insurance due to these videos. “I don’t know what this part is, haven’t used it”, “it says be careful with the grounding but I just plugged it in and it works” for gods sake man. Water cooled by a Tupperware container with the worlds least effective lid, set directly underneath saws and other woodworking materials, this video reminds me of the building a pc video where that dude just utterly failed, but no one seems to think the same lol
Great video. Question, I'm looking to get into annealing items like rings made of tungsten. What kind of a laser would I need? This is a 50w laser which is pretty strong compared to what's on the market
How dangerous is this thing in terms of fumes and the laser blinding you? I know you said that if the glass is down, it should be safe, but I still would worry about that. Thanks..

in your video you're shown with a macbook but it says it doesn't support IOS. so do use a different computer for projects? also can you purchase insurance on the item when shipping? thanks
If you get the ruida controller with the Light Burn software then you can use a Mac. In my case I ran it through another PC. The MAC was easier to use in the shot ;)
There are so-o many companies out there offering laser machines. The same type/size/performance and teere is almost $3-$8k difference in price. How do you know what to buy .. price .. laser wattage .. and most importantly, customer SUPPORT for equipment & learning?
i have an 80 watt with the ruida controller, i am running corel draw x18 and when i send files over using the plugin that came with the laser it does not fill in the text. The Laser seems to only want to "cut" objects out rather than engrave them. I did find a setting called "scan" and "cut" and changed it to scan, which then filled in the text and designs rather than outlining them but even after that the quality of the engraving is not very high. id give it a 70 out of 100. Ive tried re aligning my mirrors and they seem to be pretty straight on. the mirror i have the most issue with is the one at the tip of the laser head. i have issues getting it to come out of the tip of that cone that covers the end. the top adjustment is not very adjustable. If you have any advice id love to hear back from you because as of now the laser sits here doing nothing. its a $2000 desk.
I’ve only been able to get it to work with Laserburn which it comes with. I know the developer for Lightburn will eventually support Leetro, but not in the near future.
Is 50W enough for engraving on metal or do I need more power, like 100W? And after 1 year of using are you satisfied or would buy something different year ago?
It’s a great unit even after a year. For metal you will actually need a fiber laser or apply a coating like CerMark and engrave that off the metal. Co2’s don’t work at the right frequency for metal engraving
@@makeorbreakshop thanks) I will consider CO2 for the nearest future and I think I might buy fiber one after. Would be a great to have both in my "garage")
@@projex5894 The thing about fibre is: they are so limited in size unless you go with the big industrial machines worth 10's of thousands. I've looked into them myself. One thing I've learned from building my own CNC machine and then adding lasers: get the most wattage you can afford. You can turn it down, but if 50w isn't enough, you can't turn it up! Also: the biggest area you can afford. If you only ever plan on doing trinkets, then it isn't an issue but as soon as I built a new machine 30% bigger than my last, my next order was for one bigger than my recently expanded capacity. I attached a 5w diode laser to my CNC router and it isn't powerful enough. It can "burn" wood fine but only at 100% power at 40 ipm and has a hard time cutting through paper mask so I have to run it at 27 ipm.
@@muskokamike127, hi) I had already made an order one month ago. I decided to buy my very first machine with working area 40*60 cm, Ruida controller and 100W tube. Sure, it would be better to have bigger area, but extra pay for that and shipping cost can lighten my wallet to hard. Still waiting the machine)
@@projex5894 well, 40 x 60 is a decent size. You will be able to do a lot with it. Plus the 100w is damn powerful too. You'll be able to do a lot with that as well. I've been thinking of connecting a co2 tube etc to my CNC machine but it's a risky proposition considering the amount of dust it produces.....Turn on the laser and woosh, flame out in the shop lol. Post some pics when your machine arrives and let's check it out.
SAFETY WARNING - Those green goggles are for blue diode lasers not for the CO2 laser and if it isn't made out of PC they will stop nothing. Just a safety warning.
@@makeorbreakshop "The best stooge" is Incorrect.......Pretty much anything will work as safety glasses for a Co2 laser, especially at only 50w. The PC or acrylic safety glasses, though tint is completely redundant, will absorb the vast majority of the beams energy (which is why your co2 laser will cut/burn plastics). There protection would only last very briefly at the lasers focal point, but it would be fairly difficult to arrange having them on and getting your head under the laser head and at exactly the right distance to be at the focal point. A unfocused beam would take a considerable amount of time to get through pretty much any plastic or even glass lens (your prescription eye wear offers more than adequate protection) Second side note.......the "chiller" you showed briefly is not a chiller, it is just a radiator with a water pump and fan, the best it is capable of is cooling the water to ambient air temp, but it will struggle doing that if you run any long jobs on your machine. you would want a CW-5000 or above to get an actual chiller that uses refrigerant to cool the water. Side note number 3........inline heaters are only used for people who have their laser in a non temperature controlled environment where the temp drops below freezing. As the water freezing inside the laser tube will break the glass tube. Side not number 4...... The plastic manifold with the tube coming off it at 5:48 is what comes with the air pump (they are just pond air pumps) and the manifold is so you can branch off the main air out and feed it to several smaller lines going to aerators in your pond. Side note number 5...... If you have read this far, I actually have a spare ruida controller I would be willing to sell you if you were interested in doing the conversion. I run two machines in my home shop. A massive 1300x900mm working area 150w and a smaller 700x500mm 80w.
@@techoverload If only every comment was like this. Thanks so much for the helpful comments. I definitely didn't want to present this like I was an expert, just what I was learning so far. Shoot me a message about the Ruida!
@@makeorbreakshop Can't seem to track down any direct contact info for you and youtube did away with direct messaging. You can email me at jbabb1....gmail....
@huhhman With such a well formed argument I don't know how I could possibly reply......... 1. retail/industrial co2 safety glasses are just polycarbonate lens's 2. Acrylic will absorb a higher energy density than PC, however PC is cheaper and easier to manufacture and the difference in protection for any home/shop grade co2 laser is negligible 3. My statement about prescription eye wear is based on the fact that the vast majority of glasses (especially in the US) are made of polycarbonate. But please enlighten us as to what proper eye protection is? Is it the sticker on the box they come in that says "protects against wicked awesome lasers and totally isn't just a pair of standard polycarbonate safety glasses"? Or does it rely on short replies that primarily consist of insults and zero facts, because you certainly have nailed that.
@huhhman Another very well formed and exceptionally enlightening stance, your logic and explanations are unmatched. You are a true scholar sir. I only wish I had the insight and obvious knowledge you do.
OK...I HAVE the orion 50 watt laser machine. Been sitting for almost a year now. I'M so confused on how to operate it. I have a 3d printer but its way different than a laser machine. I don't know if it works on 1 program or 2 programs or if the vector and raster imaging is within the machine or in inkscape or another program and WHERE to design the stuff i want to design.. or what program to use. SO for a year now...I've been trying to find out information on HOW...to set this thing up and get it going. i'm about ready to kick the damned thing..lmao...like i said...it's frustrating...i can rebuild a 3d printer but can't seem to figure out... what I do..... first on this thing. HELP...if you can...i would appreciate it..or maybe even do a quick video on it...on HOW to set it up and run the software...it would be helpful to a lot of people. thanks bud. theres a british guy on youtube..but that shit is LONG and drawn out. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Im Begging you...HELP!...do a video....a slower version..maybe..drink less coffee...lmao..you did fine on this one.
Hello, you are using that laser cutter? I need help with mine and can't get it! I need the RDUSET and RDVSET original files to make mine functionally again. BECAUSE: in the Ruida machine menu is a voice like fact para settings. DO NOT TOUCH IT! it will cancel the vendor para settings and user para settings and you will throw away your machine IF you didn't save allready those files on your computer. I've done it, too bad 4 me.
OK I'm old and just getting in to lasers and what they can do when I etch glass I have like holes in the burn the coating I'm using is cold galvanizing compound. What could it be ? glass is cleaned very good but 3 times now this has happened trying to find out why the holes in the letters.
What is it with people thinking that the ground in their plug is grounding this machine!!! You're not the only one I've seen. You said, "I haven't grounded this machine but we'll see"!!! What is it you want to see? How the live wire of the laser can arc to the chassis & what a few thousand volts feels like? The Chinese don't normally ground anything, in fact they just cut it off, even on outdoor lighting so imagine how important they must think it is to include it with this machine!
Now I am 57 years old not as great with today’s Technology as much as you young guys are but I do try my best looking at this unit for $1500.00. Freaks me out my very first car I purchased was 2 years old from a Used Car Dealership cost me $2,0000.00 total and I drove that for 14 years and sold it for a profit sure I had typical maintenance costs but nothing major in all those years BTW. It was a 2 seater Convertible Sports Car and I lived in SouthFlorida. For many years

i want to buy one that engraves stainless steel, i want it for watches straps. but i have no idea what to buy exactly, because i looked on ebay and they all claim they can engrave stainless steel. could you guys help me pick one that is easy to use and would engrave about 1mm deep on steel. i also have a question you guys have probably tested before, lets say it engraves 1mm deep, so if i run it twice on the same piece would it do a 2mm deep cut or will it ruin the work? thanks for your help . 🙌🏼
Everyone said be carefull with the grounding! Also i have this grounding wire i didnt care to use! No but serious, connect these grounding wires to some kind of ground! The tube itself works with high volatage not your everage high volatage, but really high voltage we are talking about multible kV! in case of an internal short you can touch the laser metal housing and turn into instant bacon!
Good to know... I ordered one of these last week and hope to get it this week (US based supplier/distributor). Will definitely check and re-check grounding!
Sir I need to buy a laser cutting and engraving machin up to 1500 max. What machine do you recommend? Also do you have any idea about 3d printer good machine the same price max or less

The comb thing is for your fish tank - the pump is a fish tank aerator pump and that is the outlet for lots of bubbles. You don't need it.
I know it old vid but can you answer my question ! does it cut acrylic ?
Rykon is what the website says it comes with now. Is this the same, better, or worse than Ruida?
Yes, I would say so. I wasted $4k and the machine never passed FDA inspection due to a technicality - machine was sent back. Based on that and other issues I've discovered after the fact. Best not buying direct from China.
I totally agree!
Can you use it to cut metal because i am looking for one to cut names in metal to make necklaces tnx and great video❤️
That splitter thing you didn't know what was for is just a thing that comes with the air pump, when I built my laser i bought a similar pump and that's what came with it, I just threw it away
good call, thanks!
yes indeed, it's an aquarium air pump: that's a splitter to spread the air bubbles a bit in an aquarium. you can attach multiple thin tubes if you want or just put it in the water as it is.
Its not the controller on these cheap machines which is the issue its the cheap co2 narrow beam 50w laser tube :-( Its all about gearing or beam convergence if your serious about cutting any reasonable thickness perspex or mdf
I have another machine now which still has all the same cheap chinese tube mirrors and lenses
however the 80w tube in this machine has a larger diameter beam with a 2:1 stepped down XY belt resolution which makes so much difference :-)
Can cut with less wattage on the 80w machine through the same material using a faster feedrate than the small 50w machine
A chiller should have a operator settable temp setting so it can hold whatever temp you need. (within min/max parameters)
P.S. ground it anyway.
What is the maximum thickness it can cut ? And can it cut any metal materials ?
No metal cutting (maybe etch on anodized aluminum). I'm guessing 8mm plexi, because I used ul laser 80w and 12mm was pushing that machine.
I'm not sure if I misunderstood sth but if I buy a Laser with RUIDA I can use it with Lightburn? Thanks for your Video!!
Im looking to customize firearms so there will be some polymer and metal etching. Will this wattage do the job?
R Loco for metal it’s more of a frequency thing vs wattage. Check out a fiber laser for metal etching.
Appreciate the feedback. No fires yet.
So I have a question? how does this laser gets delivered ? is it UPS, FEDEX? and does driver call you before arriving with your laser?
The review is useful but please change the title to make it informative.
Not a clicbait crap implying lies.
The title is not click bait.
Good info in this one!!
Great video. Question, I'm looking to get into annealing items like rings made of tungsten. What kind of a laser would I need? This is a 50w laser which is pretty strong compared to what's on the market
You wanna mark on the rings? You need a fiber laser

How dangerous is this thing in terms of fumes and the laser blinding you? I know you said that if the glass is down, it should be safe, but I still would worry about that. Thanks..
There are exhaust hoses to you can connect and direct fumes out the window
Thankyou very much for your answer. I was thinking 2 buy one but only to cut Aluminium. Now i have to find something ealse.
What's the thickness? Maybe I can provide one.

can you make electrical tags for outlets with this could you make a video
Is it still a good buy ? With the different controller?
Totally! Mine is working great, I just have to do a little workaround because of the controller.
in your video you're shown with a macbook but it says it doesn't support IOS. so do use a different computer for projects? also can you purchase insurance on the item when shipping? thanks
If you get the ruida controller with the Light Burn software then you can use a Mac. In my case I ran it through another PC. The MAC was easier to use in the shot ;)
So i don't understand, it's better to take it with the Ruida controller or "raw" , manual controls?
Ruida especially if its paired up with the Lightburn Software

What size honeycomb bed would fit it? everything is cm not inches?????
Thank you for the tip about the Ruida controller. How does the controller you have work? Is it compatible with any software at all?
I’ve only been able to get it to work with Laserburn which it comes with. I know the developer for Lightburn will eventually support Leetro, but not in the near future.
Is 50W enough for engraving on metal or do I need more power, like 100W?
And after 1 year of using are you satisfied or would buy something different year ago?
It’s a great unit even after a year. For metal you will actually need a fiber laser or apply a coating like CerMark and engrave that off the metal. Co2’s don’t work at the right frequency for metal engraving
@@makeorbreakshop thanks)
I will consider CO2 for the nearest future and I think I might buy fiber one after.
@@muskokamike127, hi)
I had already made an order one month ago.
Post some pics when your machine arrives and let's check it out.

i ONLY FOUND ONE WITHOUT THE Ruida controller.
iS THAT A DEAL BREAKER ? PLEASE LET MA KNOW
I still don’t have a Ruida controller in mine and it’s working. You’ll have to deal with the buggy Chinese software but you can get it to work
i need help!
How to illuminate the main screen on the machine? she totally disheveled us, we do not know how to brighten up, thank you
SAFETY WARNING - Those green goggles are for blue diode lasers not for the CO2 laser and if it isn't made out of PC they will stop nothing.
A unfocused beam would take a considerable amount of time to get through pretty much any plastic or even glass lens (your prescription eye wear offers more than adequate protection)
Second side note.......the "chiller" you showed briefly is not a chiller, it is just a radiator with a water pump and fan, the best it is capable of is cooling the water to ambient air temp, but it will struggle doing that if you run any long jobs on your machine. you would want a CW-5000 or above to get an actual chiller that uses refrigerant to cool the water.
1. retail/industrial co2 safety glasses are just polycarbonate lens's
2. Acrylic will absorb a higher energy density than PC, however PC is cheaper and easier to manufacture and the difference in protection for any home/shop grade co2 laser is negligible
The rotary attachment was surprisingly large
Hi there cud you do video on how you can cut larger wood with doors and stop and starting laser why move wood thank you love you videos mate
OK...I HAVE the orion 50 watt laser machine. Been sitting for almost a year now. I'M so confused on how to operate it. I have a 3d printer but its way different than a laser machine. I have INKSCAPE program for this machine but...setting everything up...and learning HOW to use the machine...well...IT'S confusing.
How long does it take vs smaller engravers
Can I engrave and cut at the same time without Ruida controller?
It will do it in different passes but can still be within the same operation.

That white double sided tape is for aligning the laser mirrors if I am not mistaken :) Great wrap up man! Wow, that rotary is a beast!

You can use pretty much anything that will burn to align the beam to the mirrors... I've used file cards in the past, but also heat sensitive paper works well too.

how big is the working area
Is there a CO2 hookup?
Nope, it’s all off compressed air

Everyone said be carefull with the grounding! Also i have this grounding wire i didnt care to use!
No but serious, connect these grounding wires to some kind of ground! The tube itself works with high volatage not your everage high volatage, but really high voltage we are talking about multible kV! in case of an internal short you can touch the laser metal housing and turn into instant bacon!
Good to know... I ordered one of these last week and hope to get it this week (US based supplier/distributor). Will definitely check and re-check grounding!

Hello, your laser 50W CO2 can cut thin metal ( 0,20mm ) ? Thanks Roberto.
50W will not even cut thin metal. You need at least 200W to have any hope to cut even the thinnest steel using oxygen as a cutting gas. Even then, you'll be cutting pretty slowly (about 1 meter/min or less).
