At least we have one weak spot of those mercs. The second driver can block mercs while almost getting blue flagged. Problem solved !
Afaik when fighting for position you don't get blue flagged.

Fun fact: heat is, generally, the ultimate factor which limits performance. It limits your engine power (air density), your braking (pads/rotors/fluid), your tire/tyre grip (rubber/air temp), suspension grip (damper oil), and the driver themselves. Compensating for heat induces drag, takes away from downforce, can compromise on engine power, increases the weight of brakes, tires, radiators, intercoolers, shock cooling, and driver cooling. Heat is also responsible for a significant amount of wear on parts.
In the end, you're usually fighting heat to go faster.
a similar argument can be made for the opposite of heat, cold, since if it's too cold the engine wouldn't work properly, brakes would slip, tires wouldn't provide enough grip, and so on.
so, why not just call it "temperature"? :)

Clearly Merc has traded cooling ability for drag reduction. I’m starting to think the reverse grid may really affect Mercedes.
They setup the car to lead at the front. Would be different story if they know they will qualify below 1-2 position.
Well said. How have the smartest engineers in the world not figured this out as well? Or maybe some have? Racing Point, McClaren and Renault seem to have improved dramatically, no? Ferrari seem to have been relying heavily on engine cheating.
what is a reverse grid?
@@sourabhk2373 reverse grid, as far as I know, is a system where championship leaders start at the back of the grid, instead of their starting position being determined by a Qualifying session. That way you have to actually make moves and pass cars in order to win a championship, and most likely evens the playing field a little for worse teams. You can argue it's unfair to the best teams, but at least you don't have every race expecting a Mercedes 1 2.
Scott O I think most know they will be in the middle so they try to strike a balance. The weaker PU runners (Ferrari and Renault) probably put out the same amount of heat as the Merc, but since they lack the power they are forced to have a more robust radiator/cooling system. Until they can get the power up to Merc level, they will be stuck with the cooling issues.

Apparently some small changes are allowed, with a lot of restrictions of course. No weight can be added and the car has to way enough at the end for example.
@@fabiang.9588 Tinkering with non-fuel presurized systems, cooling and radiator ducts is allowed when race is suspended. Its also allowed in normal pitstop which Mercedes absolutelly love to do. Also in parc ferme its also allowed.

I like how Hamilton changed his racing lines in oder to put himself out of the dirt air and cool his car so he could overtake Perez, Kvyat and Ocon, three drivers with powerful engines , I was disappointing to see Botas behind Lando al the race when the Mercedes was clearly faster it just needed to be driven differently just like Lewis did

why does this f1 car have 3 inline engines with only 1 piston bolted together and mounter transversly

What you mean the engine diagram in the video. The V6 is being viewed from side on and only the right hand bank of 3 cylinders are shown which is what would be visible in real life. The 3 pistons have been drawn transverse which is wrong but for visualisation purposes it's acceptable i'm sure Stuart knows the pistons are longitudinally mounted.

I think another possible cause is simply the black livery. You saw the same issue with Haas, among many other issues, last year. The livery looks incredible, but black absorbs all light, and thus heats up much quicker than other colors. Its probably a small effect in the grand scheme of things, but it contributes nonetheless

Great vid as always! I just feel there is one point which wasn't mentioned, which is the so called ban on party modes. By not allowing the merc's to alter their PU performace settings/maps, they couldn't clock it down to cool it down some, and then back up to quali mode and race past whomever is in front of them. This meant that even if Bottas dropped back far enough to cool the car, he would still not be fast enough when getting back behind them to overtake them, and the cycle just repeated. He said on the radio "we can't race with these settings" and I believe he was referring to the fact that he was not allowed to change the car to better suit the situation.

Hey Stuart, can you do a video on what they can and what they can't in building and mantaining an F1?
Like how many spare cars they can bring along, how many spare parts, which ones are standardized, how many spare wings they can have in case one breaks, If a broken wing can be replaced during the race, the penalties involved in replacing parts. And if possible, (most likely is a trade secret) how they build or repair the fairings.
That would be really interesting
Did anyone else notice that @5:18 the first radiator the hot and cold side of the radiator on the right sides but the next two are backwards? Probably just me. Anyway it doesn't affect what is another fantastic Chain Bear video. Much love to Stuart a one man education machine.
To be honest, the diagrams are just representative rather than exact, but I made the radiator colder as the air passes through :)

I think the best example of the importance of cooling is the time McLaren left a fan blocking Button's sidepod duct at Monaco a few years ago. It lasted all of 2 laps before everything went bang.

The problem we saw that the Mercedes cars had last race does make sense on what we saw earlier this season or last season. I talking about that they (Or any of the other teams) may not be able to get their engine to perform well when in a race weekend with unusual high air termperature. I think it was last year where Ferrai had problems in the quali on Bahrain because of unusual high air temperature. I also remember that I talked with a mechainicer that also talk me that in theory a car engine works best if it gets large amount of cold air, because it can give off the heat faster. But of course in reality it doesnt work like that as the air will get hotter depending on where or how it goes around
Brazil 2018 was a good example of this, when Bottas’ engine gave out behind Charles because of heat

I do think there was a much longer video left on the table though, i could see you going into examples and numbers and comparing designs etc. Talking about certain tracks that are famous for pushing the limits of cooling systems, or races other then Monza that were heavily affected by it. There should be more standardization here because this is another positive feedback loop, if you're like mercedes and rarely if ever need to battle for position you can skimp on cooling and get that further advantage over other cars.

This is part of the reason I support reverse grid qualifying. Mercedes would need to design cars to go through the pack. They'd likely still be the fastest car on the track, but it'd slow them down a bit, and it would be exciting to watch them fight to the front, even if it's just qualifying.
How do we guarantee that this cannot be gamed though?

Would you be willing to do a video explaining what goes on-on Saturday? The things being looked at during P1-P3 and later into Q1-Q3? How many sets of tyres are allotted and the thinking into scrubbing them for use later. Why do teams turn up power to engines later in qualifying instead of full power the whole time?
That's the irony of it: ICE (internal combustion engine) produces heat. :)
A proper cooling setup also insures less DNF, more chances on track to do *something* and likely more championship points than zero which many teams seem to ignore altogether..
