Peter Gabriel is for me the King of music. I have listend to he's mastery since The early years with Genesis. I saw him in Stockholm for a few weeks ago. He's still going strong and he and the band sounded amazing. Thank you for reacting to the King.👍👍👍

He's got a pretty unique voice for sure - I'll be seeing him next week (all being well), which is exciting. He's been a human rights advocate for a long time, doing lots of work with Amnesty International, and promoted world music through his WOMAD festival. Many people know him as the original singer of Genesis. Glad you enjoyed it!

It’s about a war of sorts. But a war within yourself. Your own internal struggles. It’s basically about mental health.

Not sure if it is from the same concert but Peter Gabriel did a very nice rendition of David Bowie his song Heroes and did it live on stage with a huge orchestra.

Fil, lovely reaction, I love you're interpretation of this song. Peter is an activist and has been a champion of World music and artists. He co-founded Witness - a human rights organisation, a charity that trains human rights activists to use video and online technologies to expose human rights abuses. He was the founder of the World music annual event 'Womad' He has supported political exiles from oppressive regimes and created Real World Records specifically for World music artists. Peter is a doer. Yes you reacted to his song Biko in Let's Be Frank series.
#QcumberSquad #PeterGabriel - Fil, I'm off back to the study.

Anne Sexton pictured the world from the eyes of a child.
"All of the buildings, all of the cars
were once just a dream in somebody's head
She pictures the broken glass, pictures the steam
She pictures the soul with no leak at the seams."

I had a completely different take on this song. I like your interpretation ;I'll throw mine out there. I always (until now) thought it was about an abused woman trying find her way home because "in her Daddy's arms" is the only place she's ever found mercy from a man. It fits; I like your interpretation better. And it sounds more like Peter.

Anne Sexton (born Anne Gray Harvey; November 9, 1928 - October 4, 1974) was an American poet known for her highly personal, confessional verse.
Sexton suffered from severe bipolar disorder for much of her life, her first manic episode taking place in 1954. After a second episode in 1955 she met Dr. Martin Orne, who became her long-term therapist at the Glenside Hospital. It was Orne who encouraged her to write poetry.
On October 4, 1974 she put on her mother's old fur coat, removed all her rings, poured herself a glass of vodka, locked herself in her garage, and started the engine of her car, ending her life by carbon monoxide poisoning.[

I think the word you were searching for to describe this piece is ethereal? At least that's the best way I know how to describe it. My absolute favorite albums from him is the entire soundtrack from The Last Temptation of Christ. Not one bad song on the whole album, not one. It's beautiful, ethereal, & breathtaking. It literally reaches down into your soul & washes your very being in joy. It is truly memorizing. Some night when you have some extra time put aside just for yourself to enjoy music is when you should listen to it. Light some candles, close your eyes, & just be.

Playing For Change has a Song Around the World production of Peter Gabriels' "BIKO". Amazing and powerful, part of PFC's Afro/Latino series. Proceeds donated to International Red Cross effort to recover people gone missing from around the world. This series also includes several Bob Marley songs and U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I 'm Looking For" I believe Steven Biko after being arrested protesting Apartied. 3 weeks in custody then rolled out of back of car beaten, shackled and naked in front of hospital. Passed away of massive brain bleed later that day.

Your description of refugee children in these boats in this incredibly perilous situation was very impactful. The song is about Ann Sexton and her mental health struggles. Not sure if there were abuse issues, but the verse that refers to the confessions in the velvet box for the priest ( who can handle the shocks) does suggeat that there may have been something very disturbing or taboo going on. But I think Peter should also have written a song about refugees at sea taking these terrifying voyages with their families... He does often confront Human Rights issues in his work.

Amazing how you forget this huge biko song reaction you did. I remember it. May 20th 2020 according to UA-cam.
But of course as a Peter Gabriel's fan, it's easier for me.
I'm a little amused about your interpretation. It seems that any listener is unique. Obviously to me, the mention of Anne Sexton at the beginning should give you... a clue ? Even if you don't know anything about her, some of the lyrics could gave you a hint. But again, we are all different persons with different minds. I would like you could do much more of Gabriel digging.

This song and it's lyrics (which have nothing to do with Steve Biko, there is another song devoted to him) are in dedication to Anne Sexton, a revered and amazing American poet who was tragically afflicted with Bipolar disorder, into a dark and tortured place mentally.
Peter's lyrics are a dialogue drawn from the content of her Poem '45 Mercy Street', kind of how a screenplay is written from the content of a short story or novel.
She was bipolar and had manic incidents especially after the birth of her children, and after the birth of the second one, with manic incidents, she was relagated to Glenside Hospital psychiatric division (corridors of pale green and grey) and a decision was made to send her children to her husbands parents, to be as guardians. From this point on she made numerous attempts at suicide, the 10th one being successful. Her story is sad but still yielded some of the most insightful poetry ever written. Look up her works, it is so deep it seems like she had open access to the other side.
PS you did a great job on a first listen reaction, loved it..

No Brasil essa música foi muito difundida, pois foi tema de abertura de uma minissérie nos anos 80.
