I have said this for years. I have friends building huge homes in Ghana and it has taken them years to complete and still not completed. A three to four bed room single family home is cheap to build and only take you 6 month to a year to complete to include finishing.

It's the same in Jamaica. The sad thing is that after the owners died their children don't want to live there. Most of the children live abroad. They have young children and not interested in coming back home.
A big house is harder to sell too. People don't want to own others " dream house" they rather build their own. I've known of big homes taking 40 years to sell there.

Good point Dela. West Africa is peppered with monuments of forgotten dreams and its a shame. Think small when building and add on later is best. Dont be overwhelmed by building too much and plan ahead.

Big is the new small. I just built a 4 bedroom ranch style home in Ghana because I wanted to finish it early and use the rest of the money to start a business. Even with that it is not easy so I do agree building small is the way to go.

❤️❤️❤️❤️Dela, this topic about building a house too big.
My uncle went home and build a seven bedroom house.
The only time he used the spare rooms is when Family visit him and my auntie. After we leaves no one uses these room. The my auntie complains it’s too much cleaning the house. So Dela you are so right. I never understand why when people retire they build such big houses. The thing is they are not thinking of old age.
When you are getting older you needed to down size not upside.
I always say how much l loved bungalows
So I will only build a two or three bedrooms. I just make sure the rooms are large ! ❤❤❤ Love u Dela❤.

@@moretodelait happens alot in Jamaica. The sad thing is when one spouse dies and one is left in the big house. When that spouse dies the house sits there unoccupied. Their children live abroad and not interested in the house.
It took 40 years to sell our parents 7 bedrooms 4 bathroom house.
None of us wanted to live in it. It's too high maintenance plus the area changed for the worst.
      We all own small homes.

Same in the Caribbean, building a large house was a sign of success especially returning from the diaspora.
They build these huge, ugly poorly designed houses that the local taxi man has designed as they don’t want to spend the money.
Half of them are never finished as they run out of money trying to show off and ruins the look of the community
They are impossible to sell as no one wants them so they just sit locked up and abandoned. For me maximum 2000sqft 3 bed, 3 bath with gym/office and that’s it forever whatever happens I’m not moving.
    Blessings

So true and the children don't want them. It took us 40 years to sell our parents house.
My siblings and I swear not to buy a big house when we leave home. We haven't. They are high maintenance.

The money it takes to build one big house could build two 3 bedroom houses and don't have tenants living attached to the main house.
Having all the bedrooms upstairs too is a problem when people ages. They can't climb the stairs and needs a bedroom downstairs.

This is great advice you’re giving and I guess it came hindsight but its still not too late for you to make some adjustments.
I have a land and have been saving up to start. I had to downsize my plans after the quantity surveyor gave me the approximate cost. It will be too many years of hard-work and sacrifice. Im content with a smaller house. No need to pressure ourselves so much. You’re right, our kids can do the rest if they wish. We’re already giving them a head start.

It's the same in the Carribbean we want to show wealth show that we did good.... We ( my parents )have a home in Barbados all one level plenty of space 3 double bedrooms . we have an apartment upstairs.... When we built it was like look at the big house ...in fact we could have one bedroom less. It sits on a plot of land that cost to maintain. There are so many costs involved . They had the same 3/4 bed house in UK....since COVID in the Caribbean all building work cost have doubled maintenance is a nightmare.housee are constructed so you can add on either top or bottom. No one is adding ..we still thank God that we have a place... I agree with you...100*%

I was say the same thing! Why all these people building such big houses that shows me that there not used to have nothing and to out right show off. There houses are taking up most of their land so ridiculous and who’s cleaning that mini mansion. So now your going to spend more money now to hire help. I personally going to build a 500 sq ft 2 bedrms and 2 1/2 bathrms one level and put my business in the front of my property that’s only going to be 16 x 18 sq ft. An that still gives me a lot of space for growing my on food etc.. less is best.
Many blessings 🙏🏽 loving the evolution of you and your channel ☮️❤️🇧🇧🇺🇸🇬🇭😊💐🥂🍾

It’s not just houses that we over spend on… think about the oversized cars that we drive that are financed. Some of these things are not just about the house, it’s about having good financial knowledge, that is what will inform all these decisions. Otherwise it’s just going to be emotional decisions which is what causes all these issues. We need better financial knowledge, that’s the problem.

You always got to trade something off. Although it sounds good to do the rest later, it will cost you twice as much. One bedroom is way to big for some, hence they will sleep outside, owning a property is useless to some hence they will have a caravan instead. But there's something about building that you can't stop when you start, you would always want more.
