    Many thanks for this, it’s the best rules explanation out there for this under-rated game

    Another great playthrough, Jon. I like how you explain not just the rules, but also the strategy behind your decisions, as you play the game. I missed this game when it was on Kickstarter, but it is now on BGA and I love playing this game. Thanks for making it more understandable, as well as enjoyable to play.

    I was super excited about this kickstarter and tried watching a playthrough of China in preparation for it but couldn't get through it. When I saw your video on the KS page I was super excited, all of your playthroughs are amazingly clear. I'm so pumped for this game!

    Very enjoyable play through!
    At first I thought this game is definitely not for me but I always watch all of your videos so I stuck around and by the end I found myself super engaged. Obviously it’s gorgeous but it’s the scoring that is so compelling. When you were able to drop just one tent in the eastern forest and score 5 points for 2nd place I thought that was super cool. It really creates a great tension between putting enough pieces to dominate but not so many to give your opponents free points. Contrasted with other area majority games that just give out a set number of points for 1st then 2nd and so on this seems like a more interesting way to score.
    Thanks for the video!

      I'm glad you liked this one Josh :) I was wondering while filming if the Yellow player had set that up too well for us, but they had their own reasons for going big in that region and it was nice being able to pick off some efficient points from it.

      I am sorry, but I missed the point of the symbols in the black circles on the cards. During the game they pretty much mean the same thing as the symboks in the larger, colored circles. Is this some kind of colorblind-friendly thing or something else entirely?

    • @mdrueen
      @mdrueen 5 років тому

      rarewaves - Page 5 of the rule book shows the core, dark and ability runes. They are what you ‘roll” to pass skill checks. The other symbols you are referring to are story icons. If you end the game with two or more of a kind they give you victory points. They are all shown on page 9 of the rules.

    At first I thought I will pass on KS, because I thought it will be heavier area-control game, but looking how gorgeous it looks, I could not stop myself of backing it, and watching playthrough, for me it gives more abstract game vibe and I like it is not hair-pulling heavy.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 років тому +1

    Excellent video. Nice to see the complete, well-explained playthrough. My only suggestion would be that Jon not identify with a particular color, since that can be confusing. Best to just refer to "red," "yellow," and "blue."

    There's no need for a rule about a 3-card play limit when there's already a 3-card hand limit.
    I'd also prefer a 1-2 order: "You can play in 1 area, and you can put up to 2 pieces there."

    Nice playthrough. I'm confused about when you would use the alternate turn action (discard one and draw one). In your example for the yellow player at 41:01, why not play that card to add a tent in the wind region instead of discarding it? It seems like you would only want to take that action in the rare scenario where you cannot or do not want to play a card?

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 років тому

      You have a very good point here. In general I try to showcase all the game's rules during a playthrough and on that turn I thought it was a decent time to do just that. In retrospect you are absolutely right, they should have just played that card and it would have ended up having a real impact on our score if they'd gone to that windy area, in fact it likely would have put them in 2nd place. I think this alternate action is VERY rarely used, and my playthrough goes to show that.

    China and Han's scoring differ from Iwari as you mentioned, but Web of Power doesn't score the same as China and Han. Web of Power does score like Iwari. That said, Iwari will have more maps and modules than Web of Power. Iwari is also a pretty gorgeous game.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 років тому

      Huh, well I feel silly for not doing more research. I thought China was just a retheme of Web of Power and I should have confirmed it. Sorry about that!

    • @andrewwalsh9849
      @andrewwalsh9849 5 років тому +2

      I'm probably in the minority, but I prefer the graphic design China and Web of Power. The cards look cleaner and more easily identifiable.
      These one seem to have too much fluff, but I know that's the sort of thing you need to do to get those Kickstarter dollars.

  • @ludwigmises
    @ludwigmises Рік тому

    I’m working on a game design and needed a way to onboard players without them having to know too many rules up front (eg, how do I know which cards to draft without knowing all the implications?) I’m taking inspiration from the Iwari card system. There are 6 colors in my game, and players will start with 3 random cards, each having 2 possible action areas in which they can be used. Will be able to play only 1 color on your turn to do standard action, but can combine 2 cards of same color to do this special action.

  • @azariusflashfang5716

    It's a nice elegant little game for sure. Problem is I'm the kind of guy who will probably just end up playing 2 player games and area majority games typically do rather poorly at that count unless they were specifically designed for just 2 people.

      I believe the deluxe version now has a co-op rules added as a KS stretch goal to offer different playing experience (adding a third AI player - the Void) . So that may change things up a bit.

      Carlos Santillana The two player rules for this call for a dummy third player which you can take actions with at the end of your turn if you have unused cards. This might be useful for opening up a region, blocking your opponents settlements, or adding victory points to regions or totems you already control.

    During the first scoring phase when you are doing the tent scoring does yellow not also get 4 points for having a group at the top? Or is that only scored during the second scoring phase?

    I've watched many of your vids.. And I only just now realized that the "Klingon" subtitles, aren't actually Klingon.. This whole time I was like "why would I turn Klingon subtitles on? I don't even speak it.. Is this a meme/joke? That's so random that he'd put Klingon subtitles on his vids.. Do people even use Klingon subs on UA-cam?" lol...

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 років тому +5

      UA-cam unfortunately doesn't provide us with any built in options for putting notes on screen after the video is published now that they removed annotations. Because of this Rahdo came up with the idea to use Klingon subtitles instead and put corrections there. I believe his thinking was that Klingon is the least "real" of the language options so it would be least likely to put anyone off. I asked him if he was ok with me copying his idea, and he was all for it. Other board game youtubers now use Klingon as well. I REALLY wish youtube would put some sort of "corrections" language in, or a separate tool entirely, but for now this is a workaround that many of us are using.

    Just wanted to add that you speak way too fast in your videos, and I'm a native English speaker who has studied advanced phonetics. Your enunciation is spot on and you'd be a great auctioneer, but when you describe complicated mechanics it's almost impossible to take in what you say with discernable context. Please take a breath more often and insert maybe a couple shots of board movement or use captions on longer shots. It might also be helpful to use more slide style graphics when describing mechanics that way we can visualize abstract components better. If it makes the videos longer maybe break them up in more sections, like a longer, dedicated mechanics and rules video that stands alone.

    • @Fabarzuam

      English is not my first language and I'm also slightly deaf. I understand everything he says.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 років тому

      I do try to insert good breaks between shots to keep a good rhythm going, I'm sorry to hear you've had trouble with it. I actually talk significantly faster in real life compared to what you see in this video, I genuinely don't think I'd be able to pull off talking slower than I do here while still keeping my train of thought. I am always focusing on talking slower in these videos and it's gotten better over time so perhaps a slow change will make things better as I head into the future.
