The Broadway version has original songs and is the highest grossing stage production ever. The remake is about 30 minutes longer than the original, so adding those songs would be perfect. But not only did they not do that, but they effectively cut be prepared.
This remake *WISHES* it was like the Broadway musical. I've seen it three times when it came to my hometown, and I got more emotional over that than I did with this movie.

Here's the rub I have with the remake's version of "Be Prepared"; They take it too literally. In the original song, Scar isn't *just* telling them to "Be Prepared", he's explaining to him that he's got a plan, intimidating them to make the hyenas think they need him, he's already got a plan. In a way, he's not just saying "Be Prepared" for this plan he has, he's telling the hyenas to be prepared for *him*. Scar commands the hyenas with his promises of a better life under his rule and his proof of concept is convincing them that he is their superior through his cunning and intimidation factor. It's not *LITERALLY* him telling them to prepare, it's metaphorically displaying his dominance and intentions. The song is multi-faceted in it's meaning. That's gone in the remake. Scar is literally telling the hyenas nothing in the new version. He doesn't explain a plan, offer the hyenas any proof of concept, nor does he have an presence that would warrant the hyenas believing that they are his inferior. It's the equivalent of... "I have a plan!" "What's the plan?" "Oh, it's a great plan! Just trust me!" Scar doesn't come off as a master manipulator or cunning, Scar just comes off as plain lucky that these hungry animals didn't just jump him right there.

Another detail that’s ruined by scar not having known the hyenas before is that he actively feeds them in the original, like he’s very clearly shown giving them some zebra meat and the implication is that he’s done this before and proven he wants to help them. Being like hey make me king because I’ll make sure you never go hungry again is believable to them because he’s already gone out of his way to feed them already! It’s not a random lion they don’t know saying it out of the blue. They’ve been friends for a while and honestly I’ve always inferred that they’ve helped him with other plots and such, so rallying them to finally get rid of Mufasa makes sense. Scar has no lion allies so he manipulates the hyenas to work for him, it’s not the build up we need we don’t NEED to see him get them as allies we can start knowing he’s done this and not waste time with bullshit. Imo it’s the same symptom of “we have to address every dumb article and Twitter thread making stupid commentary about how a fantasy musical with singing animals isn’t realistic”. Like they were worried people really wanted to see how Scar convinced them to join him. Congrats you did it and now it makes no sense. This version is sad, lazy, half assed, and does not stand on its own. If the original didn’t exist I’d be like ok, that scene was random and lazy why the hell would they help him? If the original didn’t exist people would think this movie fits in with the good dinosaur, pretty to look at but hollow and ultimately cringe
They killed like 90% of emotions and expressions in this remake, there's no way a photo-realistic cat can be as expressive as human nor cartoon lions. Which ofc, leads to the characters cannot have any hints of subtlety and *NEED* to be literal all the time

Adum talking about how hot and cute he thinks the real Scar is, is absolutely hilarious. “He’s so cute. This is an even better frame of my husband.” HAHAHA
An animator absolutely needs the music before they animate a character. They need it so they can get the proper animal movement to stick to the beat and keep body rhythm (even if it isn't technically singing). In the 2D version, Scar empathizes his words by landing on the down beat in sync to his lyrics. CGI Scar climbs a damn mountain holding a "musical scale" without any natural wavering that supposedly would happen if you are to see a real lion with lungs climbing a mountain.
Adum spending 5 minutes trying to prove that you can't recreate the sound of a cut is like when you have to show your working on a maths exam, even when the answer's fucking obvious.
to be fair when i watched a good bunch of it on my speakers I was thinking Adam was insisting too much on it until i decided to put on my headphones and listen to it - and that is a 100%, no doubt about it, a cut in the audio
The reason why the hyenas trust so blindly in this new Scar is because they had a beep that was malfunctioning since the attack of the new Mufasa, so New Scar just went to their place and repaired the beep while telling them about his plan, the hyenas just said "yes" to everything because they were so happy with their beep repaired *BUT HEEEEY THATS JUST A THEORY, A FILMMMMM THEORY*
The worst part is that New Scar’s voice isn’t that bad, and I feel like in a good movie he might be better, but the direction of the song, the choreography, the fact that the singing is poorly directed, and how off-beat it is absolutely smothers any talent this guy might have. You can tell whoever was directing him had no clue. Honestly, even a really talented singer would struggle to save this

the thing that gets me is, even in the original the hyenas or at least shenzi questions what there part in the scheme plays and where they fit in to it all "where do we feature?". They have a history, we dont know how or why they met but that doesnt matter bc they still know him enough to trust him after he says to. "Just listen to teacher" . /because they dont have a history in this version, they have every right to doubt him and absolutely no reason to "listen to teacher" bc as far as we've seen their whole thing is that lions suck. Now that you know what to listen for youll start hearing it often. In just about any interview when you don't actually see the person speaking, there's likely many edits. It can be manipulative. But to be fair, most of the time it's benign, just trimming fat.

The weird bass boosted shit with Scar's singing voice is very distracting. There's a very artificial sounding low end when he's singing, like they've done something to the formant to make it sound deeper. Listen to him say "Which means that hyenas must too.", he sounds like he's singing in unison with fucking Optimus Prime.

Ngl, Hunchback would actually be worth remaking (unlike Lion King). And when I say that, please know I don’t mean the original is bad. It’s probably my second favorite Disney movie of all time besides Lion King. It doesn’t NEED a remake. It’s got fantastic music, great characters and an amazing story. Anticipation is the second principle of animation, which is used to prepare the audience for an action. Yet, the lions put so little effort in "jumping" that it looks more like they got pulled up by ropes while walking.
I remember an interview with Jeremy where he said he couldn't sing very well - his range is pretty limited. So they worked with him and allowed him to do more of a sing song voice or speaking o the beat of the song and then hold notes he could actually hold. This was back around the time the movie originally released though so I know I'm missing some detail. Still, it gave me so much more appreciation for the movie and I was only 13ish at the time.
Something that really annoys me that Adam doesn’t pick up on is the lyric “these leonine times are a changing”. “These times they are a changing” isn’t some colloquialism that fits into the natural dialogue for a wild animal. They’re Bob Dylan lyrics. It’s weird.
Ironically, by trying to make the main hyena into an independent girl boss, Disney actually ends up stripping her of her agency in the Be Prepared half assed monologuing. By having her, as the pseudo leader of the hyenas, be so EASILY manipulated by this mangy, half dead lion, she’s portrayed as inherently stupid instead of a clever, headstrong leader. Disney even fucked up their new changes.
Why are the hyenas trusting Scar immediately? They haven't built a rapport with him yet in this version, so for all they know, this could be Scar trying to trick them on Mufasa's behalf.
I haven't listened to Be Prepared in a very long time from the 1994 version. I listened to it again while watching this and listened to it like 10 times because it is so good. I listened to the 2019 version completely and its just so bad. There is like no life to it. Plus, Jeremy Irons was actually a good singer, no shade to the voice actor in the 2019. The music in the 1994 movie had so much life to it. I feel like the 2019 movie should have not been a musical at all. Just a "live action" of the movie. Favreau obviously wanted it to feel "live action" so why put the music in? Why even have them talk? He wanted to make it "realistic" so just put out a fucking nature documentary if you're going to fuck up the music and characters to make it more "real life".

Coming back to this video after awhile so don't remember if Adum says this but I love the way the cartoon is structured: the song ratchets up in intensity, symbolized with the green/yellow/red backgrounds in a way that even a small child will pick up on, and growing more surreal with each "phase" (from a fairly standard cave scene, to the same cave but enormous and now there's 1000 marching hyenas, to suddenly the ground beneath their feet transforming into tall rock towers). I don't know how a "live action" movie dedicating itself to some semblance of realism would ever have handled this, but at the very least a change of scenery to something more lively would've helped.
There is no reason for the 2019 version to be a musical, especially considering how Jon wanted a more "realistic" version, besides the obvious and manipulative reason that is "nostalgia bait".

When it got to "Be Prepared," that's when the movie made me angry - it took one of the coolest, most imposing villain songs ever, and retread it as a dry, excruciatingly dull monologue, which was also poorly performed.

There was no real valid reason to cut Be Prepared. It doesn't matter that it portrayed Scar and his followers as a Hitler esque kind of thing. It was portrayed as a bad thing. Villains should be allowed to be irredeemable villains that do what they do because they're just terrible that view other life as inferior. The whole point of Scar is that he wants to be king. He wants power and to be feared. The main way for him to go about getting that is to garner up "soldiers" because he is literally trying to overthrow a peaceful kingdom. Be Prepared portrayed Scar and what he was looking to do in the most perfect way possible. They didn't beat around the bush. Scar was a dictator and Be Prepared showed that. Scar had the entire hyena population of that area under his control until the end.

An animator absolutely needs the music before they animate a character. They need it so they can get the proper animal movement to stick to the beat and keep body rhythm (even if it isn't technically singing). In the 2D version, Scar empathizes his words by landing on the down beat in sync to his lyrics. CGI Scar climbs a damn mountain holding a "musical scale" without any natural wavering that supposedly would happen if you are to see a real lion with lungs climbing a mountain.
The joy on Adum's face when he starts doing the "BEEP" thing is infectious
Adum spending 5 minutes trying to prove that you can't recreate the sound of a cut is like when you have to show your working on a maths exam, even when the answer's fucking obvious.

The reason why the hyenas trust so blindly in this new Scar is because they had a beep that was malfunctioning since the attack of the new Mufasa, so New Scar just went to their place and repaired the beep while telling them about his plan, the hyenas just said "yes" to everything because they were so happy with their beep repaired

The worst part is that New Scar’s voice isn’t that bad, and I feel like in a good movie he might be better, but the direction of the song, the choreography, the fact that the singing is poorly directed, and how off-beat it is absolutely smothers any talent this guy might have. You can tell whoever was directing him had no clue.

the thing that gets me is, even in the original the hyenas or at least shenzi questions what there part in the scheme plays and where they fit in to it all "where do we feature?". They have a history, we dont know how or why they met but that doesnt matter bc they still know him enough to trust him after he says to. "Just listen to teacher" . /because they dont have a history in this version, they have every right to doubt him and absolutely no reason to "listen to teacher" bc as far as we've seen their whole thing is that lions suck. Anyone can promise things and be charismatic but, one, with how intelligent shenzi seems to be in this version she's more likely to give him a warning before they attack rather than hear him out. or two, hear him oout, brush off and/or eat him. they cant have it both ways. not without a bit history there and a friendship

There's a very artificial sounding low end when he's singing, like they've done something to the formant to make it sound deeper. Ngl, Hunchback would actually be worth remaking (unlike Lion King). And when I say that, please know I don’t mean the original is bad. It’s probably my second favorite Disney movie of all time besides Lion King. It doesn’t NEED a remake. It’s got fantastic music, great characters and an amazing story. But a remake could give the opportunity to remove those god-awful talking gargoyles and fix some of the tonal errors. Just me 🤷♀️

I remember an interview with Jeremy where he said he couldn't sing very well - his range is pretty limited. So they worked with him and allowed him to do more of a sing song voice or speaking o the beat of the song and then hold notes he could actually hold. This was back around the time the movie originally released though so I know I'm missing some detail. Still, it gave me so much more appreciation for the movie and I was only 13ish at the time.

Ironically, by trying to make the main hyena into an independent girl boss, Disney actually ends up stripping her of her agency in the Be Prepared half assed monologuing. By having her, as the pseudo leader of the hyenas, be so EASILY manipulated by this mangy, half dead lion, she’s portrayed as inherently stupid instead of a clever, headstrong leader. Disney even fucked up their new changes.
Why are the hyenas trusting Scar immediately? They haven't built a rapport with him yet in this version, so for all they know, this could be Scar trying to trick them on Mufasa's behalf.

I haven't listened to Be Prepared in a very long time from the 1994 version. I listened to it again while watching this and listened to it like 10 times because it is so good. I listened to the 2019 version completely and its just so bad. There is like no life to it. Plus, Jeremy Irons was actually a good singer, no shade to the voice actor in the 2019. The music in the 1994 movie had so much life to it. I feel like the 2019 movie should have not been a musical at all. Just a "live action" of the movie. Favreau obviously wanted it to feel "live action" so why put the music in? Why even have them talk? He wanted to make it "realistic" so just put out a fucking nature documentary if you're going to fuck up the music and characters to make it more "real life".

Coming back to this video after awhile so don't remember if Adum says this but I love the way the cartoon is structured: the song ratchets up in intensity, symbolized with the green/yellow/red backgrounds in a way that even a small child will pick up on, and growing more surreal with each "phase" (from a fairly standard cave scene, to the same cave but enormous and now there's 1000 marching hyenas, to suddenly the ground beneath their feet transforming into tall rock towers).
I don't know how a "live action" movie dedicating itself to some semblance of realism would ever have handled this, but at the very least a change of scenery to something more lively would've helped.
There is no reason for the 2019 version to be a musical, especially considering how Jon wanted a more "realistic" version, besides the obvious and manipulative reason that is "nostalgia bait".
I remember watching this awful movie. I was mostly bored and annoyed because it was repeating what was already done, except without any of the charm, warmth, or life of the original cartoon. When it got to "Be Prepared," that's when the movie made me angry - it took one of the coolest, most imposing villain songs ever, and retread it as a dry, excruciatingly dull monologue, which was also poorly performed.
Yeah I sat through it in the theaters but Wouldn't again. I was so sad that Mufasa didn't appear in the clouds.

Edit: Also "Decage of Denial" is pretty bad. I am beginning to wonder if they only gave their actors one take because in real life you only get one take at things so it's more realistic.

There was no real valid reason to cut Be Prepared. It doesn't matter that it portrayed Scar and his followers as a Hitler esque kind of thing. It was portrayed as a bad thing. Villains should be allowed to be irredeemable villains that do what they do because they're just terrible that view other life as inferior.
The whole point of Scar is that he wants to be king. He wants power and to be feared. The main way for him to go about getting that is to garner up "soldiers" because he is literally trying to overthrow a peaceful kingdom. Be Prepared portrayed Scar and what he was looking to do in the most perfect way possible. They didn't beat around the bush. Scar was a dictator and Be Prepared showed that. Scar had the entire hyena population of that area under his control until the end.
