The clarity from these snares is out of this world. Actually the clarity from the whole line is insane. I can’t imagine playing so exposed like that today. You have to be on ALWAYS.
SSSSCCCUUUEEEMEEEEEEEEEBUT... I AGREE & I LIKE THIS "aggressive" approach. new-school drumline (corps level) is diverse & very tasty, but they didn't have "drum on a pillow" chops.... old-schoo chops beat new-school every time .. I marched under HANNUM's technique (through the drum & into the ground while not smashing or crushing) (use the rebound like hulk hogan) w/ Troop & we never used stands, & played "8 & forever"... ... ... for a mile. I could break bones in the average human playing the way I was taught. ... food for thought... What think you?
@@morgannowlen8375 the tuning is super exposed. Any sort of ticks are gonna stick out. And the writing is REALLY exposed. Cold attack rolls, super choppy. And the drill for this show is another level
@@daintersc4 I mean people play with similarly exposed tuning today, just less so by virtue of the drums being bigger and more resonant. And lines today play stuff a lot more choppy than this. I do wish more corps would haul ass while playing though
Man, lots of notes were changed between this and finals. Some cool beats, but I certainly can see why some of those changes happened. Another gem upload!
Excellent quality video for 1996 I must say. Excellent quality drumming too by the Blue Devils. I take it they only got better as the season progressed as their second stop was close to my hometown in Clovis California. Dave Glide looks young in this video as well. Dave Glide and a few others helped my high school school marching band’s drumline win Nationals in 1994 I believe.
5:18 - 5:46 ahhhh the original snare part that was also hosed by season’s end. Another cool arrangement I liked that didn’t make the final cut for this season.
3:31 That’s the original Mission Impossible Theme BD played in the closer before they axed it not long after. I believe the Fullerton Ca show was the last show that part was there and a week later it was changed to their recognized arrangement as you see at 9:39 a few weeks later. Prefer that old ending.
dude........................ I can only imagine what it'd be like to be high through a summer.... any thoughts/knowledge?
@7 Angels 7 Plagues Is what I said offensive? I'm not trying to be. I didn't mean to break the rules here. I got most of those stories from an 80s BD snare. And as far as offensive, I'm certainly not cursing anyone out or trying to kick them out like the previous commenter. 😜Any guidance from the host?
sorry, these guys are thought of as the "one of the best" & they were tighter than other lines & on other nights they had clout at that level. They were always in contention for drums. BD94-97. But take the 94 Cadets. ... Bachman... they would be slightly off & cause they were all so good, their slightly off could make them sound like shit cause they were all so confident in their timing & attacks... but once they sinked up in the back-lot... Cadets were this clean & cleaner & at much faster tempos & FAST rolls... the most "one-drum" line I ever experienced in person & I saw everyone those years at ALLENTOWN.

Did they win drums?
@@rifle2563 yes
Exactly the tuning today hides so much..not baked and cranked like they used to be
Why doesn't anyone play like this anymore? It's such an aggressive and cool approach to drums.
To soft!!
They rather be ballerinas

Idk ask the generation that marched it, they teach today
@@rifle2563 a lot of caption heads are from even before this generation. Its just the trends that shape approaches.
Because the activity has vastly overweighted visual in scoring, and thus ballerina drumming.
This is the drum line I idolized as a new kid.
OH HANDS DOWN YAH!
Same here!!
This was the line that got me into DCI!!! Dude, thank you so much for posting this! I have a soft spot in my heart for this line!
same thing me: but I got it for 95 first: tenor player: TENGO..

Nobody plays with the balls of steel that these gentlemen played with back in the day.

Nothing quite like a clean buzz roll. This line was fantastic!
Sounds like they nailed those cold-attack rolls at 6:49. With shaping no less!
That was seriously probably the toughest thing about our snare book all season.
Good job sir. Legendary drumline.

@@morgannowlen8375 not BD but yeah. I had "The Line" video and book which had the finals lots and some of the notes from 95-97.

Those BD lines of mid 90’s were epic.
94,96,97 were my favorite of all time.

Love the tenors from this era.

Wood construction of both ships and railcars was obsolete by 1932! What are you talking about?

@4:05 classic long (16th note dubs) roll, just like Cavvies frum tha 90s.

For the algorithm. ✊
the guy at 1:28 who says “wELL tHeY cAn pLaY!” 🤪
compared to modern BD, this is more playing through the drum, with more chops. prove me wrong
Just different chops. Those accent-tap and cheese rhythms in the beginning are *sketch*
damn that 60fps
Many of the changes that came after this were more because of show design. It was too loud too much so they had to add softer sections for GE.

So bizarre to listen to. There are some *wack* rhythms in there. It's "wrong" to a metronome, but their interp is so consistent! Enlightening.
