I really appreciate Matt’s editing. At this point I feel like this show is hosted by Matt too, just by how much character he puts on the editing process and overlay texts, and interacts with what Graham is saying. Well done, Matt!
Graham, I just listened to you for nearly an hour and a half talking about Olympic mascots, I think it's safe to say a lot of us like listening to you talk. 🙂
The other thing about Monstrous is that it can be activated at instant speed. I have no idea why I assumed it was sorcery speed initially when I saw it (note: I was on a Magic break when Theros came out, so I only saw it later on), but that explains why the activation costs are so high.
5:40 Cheese-Tax Puppy {2} {G} 2/1 Creature - Dog Haste You may sacrifice a Food token rather than pay this spell's mana cost. Whenever you sacrifice a Food token, Cheese-Tax Puppy gains +1/+1 until end of turn.
9:40 this was definitely the set to bring back scry in big numbers, but! we did see scry return twice before this. once in m11 as the first returning-coreset-mechanic when they used to do that, and once in futuresight. and not as a one-off like a lot of time spiral things, but on a decent number of cards. it was the mechanic meant to represent "future" the most
Good old Theros. The set I started magic with. I'm getting back into it now, and its weird to me how nostalgically people look back on it, since it was like two blocks ago for me...
They did try to fix Regenerate in the from of Shield Counters. they're almost exactly the same, with the exception that they prevent one source of damage, no matter the amount or remaining toughness of the creature, which is different from Regenerate which only helped if the creature was going to die. there are a couple other minor differences, but that's the big one.
It wasn't just that cycle, BTW; all of the cards with bestow gave stats and abilities that were identical to the card itself. (Even some negative ones, such as 'can't attack alone'.) I don't know if it was more for flavor or for ease of reasoning, but it was a deliberate design decision.
I started playing magic with a box of donated cards when I was 7, but I started buying my own cards and really playing when Theros and Journey into Nyx came out. Some of may favourite cards, mostly because nostalgia but also it's just so fun.
So the nymphs are kinda sorta precursors of "living weapon" equipment, -ish? (And do I want to know if the shield tokens from... Neon Dynasty? worked any better than regeneration?)
Well, living weapon predated bestow, so not precursors. But yeah, they are a weird mirror of each other. One starts as a (pseudo) creature and becomes an attachable thing while the other starts as an attachable thing and becomes a creature. Really though they were the latest entries in WotC’s attempts to make auras that do not have inherent card disadvantage. Rancor’s cycle (when going from battlefield to the graveyard, return to hand) and totem armor (aura dies instead of the creature) were previous entries.
They shoulda called Bestow "Piggyback" instead. Ride another creature piggyback--if it dies or gets exiled out from under you, well, ya just keep running!
To be fair, you can’t see the I’ll-tempered cyclops’s feet in the illustration, so the scenario outlined by Graham is not out of the realm of possibility.
Ah, Flamespeaker Adept, a card you probably shouldn't build a deck around, and yet I built a deck around it! Honestly, wasn't terrible, did okay at FNM, though certainly wasn't the most winningest deck around at the time. With cards like Aqueous Form, Journey's End, Magma Jet and Titan's Strength you could get it surprisingly large, sometimes unblockable and with enough consistency to be a fun deck to play with!
Yeah, since then the Boon of Erebos effect could either be the returns into play or just straight up gets indestructible. I think we're in a better place than Regenerate now.
Theros is one of my all-time favorite sets, but a lot of the cards in it have unfortunately been power crept out of playability in eternal formats. Makes it easy to draft, though
As a matter of fact: No I don't enjoy watching Graham talk. I just watched every single crack a pack video back to back because I'm a masochist. In fact, I might go and watch all episodes of tap tap concede back to back too now.
"Regenerate" is such a bad keyword. All they had to do was *not* make it a verb. Call it "Regeneration"! Done. A creature with Regeneration with Regenerate. No more implication that it's an (re)action as opposed to a status effect.
Great to see Theros! Still dislike the audio effect applied to the crack packing asmr, makes me wish we just didn't have the pack cracking noise if we are just going to heavily filter it
"Dramatic Reengrahament" is a great turn of phrase that needs to stick around.

Oh my god, they were ROOMMATES!
Not just roommates, but Kynaios and Tiro!
"Gotta pay the Blood-Toll" to the tune of "The Cheese Tax" absolutely killed me. Well done
I somehow had not seen the Cheese Tax before so that was a nice random find
@@NStriplesevenwelcome as one of todays lucky ten-thousand. (And if you don’t know what that means, guess you’ll be going on another internet search)
It was brought up on Let's Nope a while ago and has been living in my head ever since

I was not prepared for the horse sounds

I love the set with The heroes
the whinny was terrifying, thanks for that
The guys on Guardians of Meletis are Kynaios and Tyro, right?
Yes.
im so mad the Guardians of Meletis roommates joke was so funny
The drawer absorbing so much pack energy that it now spontaneously spawns packs feels like a Terry Patchett thing

@ 3:00 thank you for coming to my Graham Talks.
I do enjoy that the cyclops did not have its feet pictured. Perhaps it was nervous to show off its feathery sandals.
I started playing with Theros and got back into LRR with the Friday Nights series!
I've always had a soft spot for Voyaging Satyr, was a part of my simic "untap" tribal deck years back. Plus the flavor text is hilarious.
Theros is the set that got me into Magic, always glad to see it on this channel!
It was my first full set and prerelease, too.
4:24 This effect makes me very happy, thank you editor(s)!
Ordeal is 100% the pick. Theros didn't have a lot of cheap removal and taking out a Heroic creature before it could trigger won a lot of games.

voyaging satyr has a fun flavor text👍
Love these crack-a-packs. Theros wad the first major set I got to play LGS events for. And it's about the time I found LRR!
Heads up, "omenful" isn't a word but "ominous" is.
i'm so full from omens
Fiddling with my scrying tools and orb, not really looking to gain true futuresight, just feeling a bit omenish.
Well now we want it to be a word >:(
Pro to the satyr untapping a land? Nykthos was in this set.
Very very true
Delightful as always!
Why'd you have to remind me that Theros was TEN years ago? I remember playing that standard like it was yesterday
3:00 You’re welcome. That is why I’m here.
Thanks for the video. Great to hear your voice.
This was the set where dealing 7 damage to a flyer was not enough a substantial portion of the time
Theros was my first set of Magic and I still love the set so much
Always thought that was an owl on shredded wings!
Staggeringly Fast Theros Boosters

Mark Rosewater talks a lot about R&D on his Tumblr blog, he had previously confirmed that it was a deliberate choice to help reduce mental load.
Hypnotic Siren is a slight stretch on this front, since the ability it grants is Mind Control

I really shouldn't have been drinking while Graham talked about the Guardians of Meletis. There was almost a computer desk disaster of Mountain Dew.
Always excited for some Theros opening!
0:50 its called a printer gram
I quickly went to smash the subscribe button BUT I’ve already subscribed 🤓

You chose "The Cheese Tax" as a melody, while I chose "Troll Toll". Yeah, yours is definitely the more creative choice.

Bestow: Reconfigure, but aura
To be fair, you can’t see the I’ll-tempered cyclops’s feet in the illustration, so the scenario outlined by Graham is not out of the realm of possibility.
Ah man. I never played this standard format, but taping voyaging dryad to untap nykthos seems really fucking good.
Wait what am I talking about? I played the hell out of this format at FNM. I just never saw someone do that, and I was too focused on RDW at the time.
Regenerate could almost be replaced by the shield counters introduced previously.
These and dragons maze were the first magic packs id ever opened, wild mechanics, very kamigawa esque complexities.
Engagement for the engagement god!
Ah, Flamespeaker Adept, a card you probably shouldn't build a deck around, and yet I built a deck around it!

I'm confused as to why Graham is asking us if we know of the technology for pack-generating drawers. Surely Paul is "Working on that Technology"?
A disappointing lack of Shuss, Izzy, Lizzy, and Mukmuk cards in this set despite it being Greek/Olympic themed.
Yeah, since then the Boon of Erebos effect could either be the returns into play or just straight up gets indestructible. I think we're in a better place than Regenerate now.
wow its the guardians of meletis from the mtgo sound and display menu
Seriously why that card and why that card for TEN YEARS
If you had the technology to clone Paul around still, you might be able to just get packs of Theros.
But won't it all be the same pack that way?
@@Drecon84 I mean, probably yeah.
Hey roomie, let me touch your hair in this one portrait that guy over there is painting of us. It'll drive them nuts thousands of years from now.
To be fair we can't tell if that cyclops has feet.
Crack! A! Pack!

Fun fact: we were flesh-mad steeds just two months ago!
The technology to generate packs exists, Brother, but understandably many doubt its legitimacy.
"Regenerate" is such a bad keyword. All they had to do was *not* make it a verb. Call it "Regeneration"! Done. A creature with Regeneration with Regenerate. No more implication that it's an (re)action as opposed to a status effect.
It had other issues beyond that. Also, “regeneration” wouldn’t work on Instants that grant the effect until end of turn.
Easily my favorite plane despite the disrespect it gets from the story
First, where is my prize?
Great to see Theros! Still dislike the audio effect applied to the crack packing asmr, makes me wish we just didn't have the pack cracking noise if we are just going to heavily filter it
