    The Tesla Model 3 SR+ has received a significant update and is now fitted with a different battery pack.
    The new “LFP” (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate) battery is cheaper, easier and more ethical to mine but less dense compared to Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminium.
    So the pack size has increased to c.60kWh to compensate.
    Also a fundamental difference is that the cars can be charged to 100% daily and not capped to 90%.
    So why does all this mean for real world range, efficiency and charging capability?
    These cars have a heat pump as standard plus double laminated front windows which should also help in this cold weather.
    I’m very impressed!
    What other changes are there? Heated rear seats and steering wheel too?
    Thanks for watching!

This channel is now becoming a public service. I have a 2019 Model 3 performance - the best and most enjoyable car I have ever owned, in my opinion - and, as I look to the future of my, hopefully, continued use of Tesla cars, this channel will be my main source of information and informed opinion on the matter. LFP means Lithium-Iron-Phosphate.
    There is NO precious metal
    There is NO unsustainable elements like cobalt.
    There are NO toxic elements.
    It’s also MUCH safer in a crash and can be used every day from 100% to zero%, if that’s your wish, with no battery degradation.

  • @jjackson3240

    About bloody time. I built my first LFP vehicle in 2006. Converted a Gary Fisher mountain bike to electric using two Dewalt 36 volt LFP battery packs. We used to call them LiFePO4 but I guess everyone got tired of the long form. Anyway, I put about 4000 miles on those two batteries two years before I quit using them on the bike. Now 15 years later I still have those packs and they still work in my drill. They were cylindrical A123 cells rather than the prismatics that Tesla uses.

      I understand the only thing stopping widespread adoption of LFP in auto was a particularly expensive patent that expired in Sept 2021. Almost all Cars in China use LFP as they don't enforce patent. My guess is most new cars in the coming years (esp non performance) will come with LFP.

    I'm still on the fence between ordering a 'standard' Model 3 and opting for the long range. But honestly, based on the results I see here, it looks like the standard car is already very suitable for longer drives. A half-an-hour stop after 190 miles of driving sounds very reasonable to me. Especially since it's still a 9000 euros price difference I'm looking at here.

When you take that & ability to charge to 100% into account we aren't going to loose that much effective range. Plus found charging curve on our LG battery wasn't great on road trips, though 95% of time charge at home. Thanks for an informative video. A bit more about LiFe(PO4) batteries would be worth explaining. It doesn't use any "precious" metals at all so problems with supply/mining are alleviated. The Model 3 you are driving is made in China, I don't think you said this - some folk are claiming its assembly is rather better quality than those from the USA. It uses the LiFe battery made by CATL, a huge company which makes gigawatt hours of such batteries for buses etc. LiFe batteries have been mostly ignored in regard to BEVs up to now, as the Li-ion battery is more energy dense and has a higher voltage. However, I believe LiFe batteries have so many advantages, particularly in cheaper BEVs, they will ultimately be the norm. Cheaper BEVs manage on 50-60kWh, so they can still be fitted to the smaller cars. That's still a range of around 190-225 miles at 3.7 miles/kWh (300-360 kms at 6 km/kWh - that's what my Leaf gets, and many other BEVs are much the same) which is more than adequate for most purposes. The Tesla is super efficient as you note - rather more so than its rivals.
    LiFe batteries can be happily charged to 100%, a great boon, countering their nominal lesser storage capacity, they are more robust and won't go on fire, but their massive advantage is they can be recharged several thousand times, twice or three times that of Li-ion, equivalent to a million miles of motoring or more. The car will fail long before the batteries. Concerns with battery degradation are almost totally absent. They don't tolerate cold so much, reducing power and recharging, OTOH they tolerate heat much better.
    The major problem with the Tesla you don't mention is that it is not a hatchback. It easily could be but for some reason Tesla/Musk haven't designed it so. It would be easy to retool its assembly to make saloon and hatchback versions. I hope they do, competition might make this a necessity. A hatchback Model 3 with LiFe batteries would be the perfect BEV. The Model Y will be considerably more expensive, and it's much larger, the Model 3 is already pretty large for UK motoring needs. .

    • @ouethojlkjn
      @ouethojlkjn 2 роки тому

      Yes absolutely about bringing out a M3 "hatch" for the rest of us!!! This version would instantly sell all over the world, except perhaps the USA. I think they thought about this when they only had the Model S, which is a hatch pretending to be a saloon unlike the Model 3 being the other way around. I heard also that an expensive patent on LiFe batteries expired in SEP 2021 and this patent was the ONLY reason this chemistry wasn't wide spread outside China (who seldom enforce patents). There is going to be an avalanche of LiFe cars coming from China to Europe / Asia Pacific and eventually USA. My guess is in 10 years, almost all cars will have LiFe and maybe Tesla will do their usual trick of offering "retro fit" LiFe to cars orginally sold with Lion?

      Makes sense to me that if they can get the LiFePo4 chemistry into a 4680 cell format, they get the benefit of a single body type, and a single pack structure, which would cut complexity and cost.
      The lower density will give a natural performance difference to the "high spec" cells but still gain major benefits compared to the current cars, as I speculated.

CATL is now the go-to battery supplier for LFP in China and US produced cars and BYD will probably be a secondary supplier. You have to keep in mind that Tesla, themselves, have near-ZERO real-world experience in battery manufacturing and the 4680 is proving to have a very long development cycle and even when production quantities are possible, there is still the spectre of a handful of failures causing a massive recall. My best figure in 2019 SR+ was 164 in summer. 158 is just astounding. Assuming 50kwh thats over 316 miles. Well done. This 2022 version is possibly capable of at least the same range, but performs better in winter as LFPs are not fussy about the cold. My average at 4 degrees Celsius today at 70 mph was 320 wh/mile, so it’s a lot more efficient. The car was loaded with passengers and baggage and it was raining, so that might had an impact as well. There is something about the pin sharp steering RWD cars the lesser weight at the front leaves these RWD cars turning quicker and responding to the throttle to make them turn in. Other than collecting the car from Tesla we've not been anywhere yet, but I've high hopes that we'll get a good few more miles out of it. Without doubt the efficiency coming home in the new car was way better than our original 3.

    Yes, you CAN go to 100% but don't be fooled, it still hurts the LFP battery, it's just that because it has many more cycles in it than your standard NMC battery you won't notice the damage as quickly. You should still not charge to 100% all the time If you plan on keeping your car for a longer period of time.
    They ask you charge to 100% every so often simply because it helps with calibrating the Battery management system.

    Went for the Performance last time because the lease deal was cheaper than the Long Range and only marginally more than the SR+ This time LR is £50/month more than the SR+and the Performance is a further £80/month. Difficult to justify even the LR given how many times we actually use the full range limit. I'd miss the performance, but as you say, the SR+isn't exactly slow.

    I own a 2022 RWD Model 3. The Tesla RWD LFP Model 3 is the most efficient EV made, which is highly impressive considering it is a little rocket ship. It's comfortable and quiet except over rough roads, which is true for most cars in this price range. You would have to go up to six-figure EVs to get better suspension. That being said, the ride of this car is very good, even over rough roads. It's an excellent car.
    Three things that could be improved:
    1. it would be nice to have about 50 miles more range. The 2024 Model 3 does have more range.
    2. In Arizona, the heat pump has to constantly cool the battery to protect it, even when the car is parked (especially when it is parked in the sun). This costs you about 40% of your range in 90-100 degree F weather. However, the fact that the Tesla cools the battery to protect its longevity is excellent. I will gladly give up some range to extend the useful battery life. I do with the batteries were more heat resistant. Perhaps with the advent of solid-state batteries, that will materialize.
    3. It would be very much appreciated if the car blocked out more road noise. The new 2024 Model 3s are much quieter on the road. However, this 2022 Model 3 is pretty quiet most of the time on the road. It only gets noisy when the road is very rough.
    When the weather is cool (I live in AZ) I get about the same range exactly that you got, and I have 19" wheels. It will realistically go approximately 240-250 miles with mixed driving if you don't push the speed and drive it reasonably. That's exceptional for a two-year-old electric car.
    Typically, if you precondition the battery, you can get up to 150 KW per hour charging. But it drops down quickly as you approach 50% and keeps dropping. You can charge from 30% - 80% in about 20 minutes on a Tesla supercharger, which is very fast. It does take a long time for it charge that last 20%.

    So the reasons for the LFP battery in addition to what was already stated are: safety as in fire resistance, charging life as in duty cycle, and cost. The downside not directly mentioned is the rate of power delivery. LFP releases energy more slowly than the older chemistry which is reflected in the slightly slower acceleration. This chemistry will be the preferred one for high usage vehicles such as taxis. It will degrade more slowly as well. For less demanding owners who simply want a really nice commuter car, LFP has the potential to displace the Toyota Corolla on a purely cost driven basis.

    • @Adam-lx4et
      @Adam-lx4et 2 роки тому

      The previous LFP maintained the 5.3 0-60 so not sure about that part of the theory but the rest I agree with. What I notice about my lfp is the lack of regen in cold temps so this will increase break wear more

      @tommanseau6277 2 роки тому +1

      @@Adam-lx4et I think you can tell I like the concept and probable long term benefits of LFP. My understanding, limited as it is, is that for the higher performance models, the 2170 cell delivers energy faster to the motors. For the standard range the LFP are clearly up to the task, not certain about higher performance models. But for comparison, that 5.3 time is faster than most stock muscle car times from the 1990's. As to the regen situation, I'm not sure what's going on in your circumstance. It might simply be good old chemistry at work where LFP needs slightly higher temperatures to operate at peak efficiency.

    • @Adam-lx4et
      @Adam-lx4et 2 роки тому

      @@tommanseau6277 gotcha yeah I wonder what the max power draw can be, another benefit for LFP is a minor voltage change over the whole SOC spectrum so the performance is near enough maintained even at lower SOC. That is my Son's new M3. Mine is a 2018 LR RWD M3 and all those specks were almost Identical as he was following me. I was 2 to 3 wh/m higher is all. My overall wh/m is 251. 232 is my rated and I have 90,100 miles on my car. That's my Summer/winter average and is up from 244 last winter when I did a 3800 mile winter road trip with temps averaging 22 deg F. I get a few Days in Summer around 100/102 F maybe 10 days total and winter temps hit single F digits. Better than I could have imagined. My car charging to 293 miles at 100%.

    Terrific review again, REALLY helpful. Wish it didn't have a jittery ride but at least it's a lot better, from all accounts, than the Y. I have a Y LR on order but will probably cancel, once I've driven one, and the 3 SR could be the best alternative. The i4 eDrive40 will be tempting though, even if only for the hatchback boot and ride quality. I suspect Tesla engineers tune suspension for US roads and have no idea how bad ours are. It's interesting that US reviewers never seem to complain about the Y's ride and yet UK reviewers always do (other than Quentin Wilson).

      Just remember that there is quite a difference in spec between SR+ and LR (in the UK we can only get AWD LR) - the UK SR+ does not come with front foglight, subwoofer, headline speakers (they are they but not connected) and possibly other things. Its may be a decision based on other things than the drive train... I love my 2019 SR+ but dithered for ages about whether to get the AWD. I am not disappointed with the SR+ but had I realised the difference in standard equipment, I would probably have gone for the AWD. Anyway, whatever one you opt for - it's going to be brilliant!

    Great review. I have a 30kwh Leaf and have been waiting for technology to evolve before "upgrading" (although the Leaf has performed impeccably).
    I find it difficult to look beyond a 2-3 year old Model 3 with 60kwh LFP battery. Telsa seem to have found the sweet spot with the car.
    I wish they'd back it up with a 7 year warranty. That would make it an absolute no brainer. A solid 200 mile, worry free, range is perfectly adequate for me. I like a break every few hours.
    I now live in SW France, where "normal" driving is at 50-80km and the roads are perfect. I see this as a 300 mile/450km car, that will be fully charged every morning.
    What's not to love about having a car with 300 miles always in the tank?

    Is it just me or does quoting w/h per mile seem wrong? Surely it’s just the number of watts to do a mile and time shouldn’t be included? Great video, Tesla is getting better and better.

      Great question to ask. We want to know how much energy we use to travel a mile. Watts is Joules per second (energy per unit time). To get total energy per mile, you need to multiply Watts by time. 1 Watt Hour is 3600 Joules. So Watt Hours per mile is a correct unit.

    60kwh LFP Degradation after 5 months and 6500 miles UK, my 100% charge during freezing weather used to show 275/274 miles. Each month I have lost a mile. Today after a full charge and 13c dry, it reads 268miles at 100%. Not sure if this is the norm as I thought it would be better in warmer weather, I charge to full at least twice per week and do a combination of motorway/Urban. My avg Wh/mi = 245, today over 31 miles motorway and urban 223 Wh/mi. Roll on the winter :) I think I may have the faster motor version as ordered Sept, paid for SR+ and got a RWD.

      LFP battery range can degrade about 10% over the first 12months (1000-1500miles per month) then virtually stop degrading for the rest of the battery life.

    Just an FYI the M3 RWD cars delivered to Ireland in September 22' all have a massive buffer so 100% to 1% usable battery is now only 52kwh. The pack is still 60kwh but has a lot bigger buffer than the one Richard reviewed here.

    My 2023 SR LFP is a "love/hate" relationship so far. I love the efficiency, the range, acceleration, handling, the looks, ergonomics, cargo space. I hate the damned creaks, squeaks and rattles from the interior. It's like a hydra - you fix one rattle and a new one appears somewhere 😂

    I took note of his comments regarding suspension and handling of the Model 3. I haven't yet tried to corner really hard in my Tesla but it does feel ok around corners and on the road. I did compare it to heaver Teslas, especially the model Y, and the standard and RWD model 3s do feel the best on the road, probably due to their lighter weight. Compared to quick petrol cars I have owned, my driving style has naturally changed with the model 3. I no longer feel like I need to hoon around the corner because fast exist speeds are so much more accessible compared to petrol cars, which need to be kept on the boil all the way around the corner in order to achieve achieve a fast exist speed. No doubt tearing around corners will get you from point a to point b a bit quicker but the instant acceleration out of corners means this driving style is no longer really necessary. And I also found that reducing the tyre pressure down from the recommended very high 42psi helped with the figity on road feel. This will no doubt affect efficiency a bit, but I doubt by much, plus wear the tyres a bit quicker. But the weight of the model 3 standard is low enough to be fairly easy on tyre wear anyway. All up I have to agree the standard range / RWD model 3 hits the sweet spot in the model range.

    I'm still wearing sandals at this time of year. My late Nov LFP SR 3+ is wafting warm air onto the feet within a couple of minutes even though it has been < 10ºC for the last month or so. Inside temp set to 19º. I'm not aware of having set up anything special in the settings. I'm still finding my way about. e.g. just found that this car already has a memory stick that came with it. That's nice as I thought that they were extra.

    Thank you Richard for convincing me to go with the “standard” Model 3 instead of the Long Range. The extra money saved will be used to wrap the car in protective foil and get it tinted.
