I always thought the Kingdome was cooler than Safeco. Such a better name too. I remember watching this on TV and being bummed as a kid. See I was in the Jr. Mariners fan club and got a free ticket. So my parents loaded up the minivan and we drove to Seattle for a game. We got there 2 innings late and while we where looking for our seats I almost caught a Jay Buhner fowl ball. But ...whoever the Yankees right fielder was ran up the wall and snagged it for the third out. our gloves touched, I got to watch about 2 more innings, just stooooked and then my baby sister started projectile vomiting all over my mom. We left to drive 6 crappy hours home no stops in a pukey van but got stranded for a few hours due to a flat tire somewhere in the wasteland. Anyway I never made it back to the Kingdome.
Wow I remember watching this on the news when I was 5 or 6 years old. Brings back memories of my dad taking me to the Kingdome for Mariners games sitting right behind Ken Griffey Jr
I attended the very first event hosted in the Kingdome in 1976, a Fleetwood Mac concert. I also attended the very last event hosted in the Kingdome, a Mariner's game, in 1999. Lastly, I also was witness to the Kingdome coming down in 2000, from about 6 blocks away, perched on the Yesler Way overpass over I-90.
The Kingdome was demolished before the debt issued to finance its construction was fully paid and as of September 2010, residents of King County are still responsible for more than $80 million in debt on the demolished stadium. ain't that some god damn shit.
I remember going there when i was little To watch the seattle supercross series. Its sad that they dont have it anymore. Does anybody else remeber supercross being there?
I think this was the exact broadcast I watched live at 7 years old; it was the first time I heard the word "implosion", ha ha. Now that Safeco Field's been around for 12-13 years, I often completely forget about the Kingdome ever existing (then again, I don't ever remember watching baseball or attending a Mariners game pre-1999, so it wasn't a huge part of my childhood :p). Ah, memories.
Idk why i get a lil sad watching these Gr8 Monster Structures implode. I got here while watching the Royals v. Mariners Preseason Game. Announcers were sharing memories: "It was claustrophobic!" & "The Fans were like Right Ontop of you!" They discussed the Good times, 2. U can take away the park, but u can't take away the MEMORIES! -Much Love, Seattle, from a Royals Fan X♡
I give one last salute to that marvelous building. I mean yeah I know it was a dangerous building and everything, but the history that took place in that building was just amazing.
I remember going past it the day before this happened on the way to Mt. Vernon, and thinking "wow, this is the last time I'll ever see it." Then when I came back the day after it happened, it was so weird not to see it there.
@FriendofEddieCoyle Amen to that brother, countless memories. I remember when the thing was built back in 75' and seeing bands like Zeppelin, Floyd and UFO and Bon Jovi play there. So many Mariners games, so many great people I met. The Kingdome was a place where Washingtonians could forget their troubles and have fun, and I remember the Dome opening when I was 25 years old. Sad to see so many great memories turn to dust in ten seconds. RIP Kingdome, the Northwest Shall Never Forget You *tear*
Next up, Candlestick Park. Now THERE's one to get sentimental over. 53 years. Willie Mays. Last Beatles concert. Joe Montana. The Catch. Congratulations, 'Hawks. You earned your trip to the smoke-a-bowl fair and square.
what's the most unbelievable thing I have seen is no traffic in downtown Seattle. lol. Anyone recall how long it was before they reopened the roads? 11-15-15
The king dome was an arena that served a place for sporting events. The Seattle Mariners (including Ken Griffey Jr and Sr) played there for many years. As did the Seahawks.
@cbarrett34 and Key has the suites, etc that the NBA wants correct? I still haven;t understood it besides the fact that the new owner decided to move the team just because he wanted to. Here in Indiana we used to have Market Square Arena, I loved that place...but i had no suites so down it went and up went the Fieldhouse.
Wow Seattle, you could have put your basketball team back in there again but you tore it down, the team cried Seattle Center(Key Arena) still wasn't enough. I think the Sonic fan got screwed.
I love the mariners because I live in Tacoma and mariners played great baseball in the kingdome it was easier to hit. But it was inside. Baseball is an outside sport. So Safeco is outside and the roof that opens and closes
I was like 5when it went down but i missed it now i saw what i missed not as spectacular as i was expecting but i love seattle i live in olympia though
I was there, front row, drinking a cold one. It was kind of sad. I had lots of great memories in the dome. With that said, what we have there is so much better. I will say this, what a waste of tax paying dollars. (I'm a sports fan too).
remember going to the Kingdome as a kid with my family and the fireworks coming down from the ceiling when we got a home run. I went to the last game they played there not sure how we got tickets for that but it was a very bittersweet moment for sure. Safeco has never had the same feel and just looks plain old ugly comparatively
Are you kidding? The Kingdome was reviled as one of the ugliest major buildings ever built, some called it the "Cheeseburger". Safeco field is gorgeous by comparison, was designed to mimic an old-time baseball field, open air, lots of exposed steel. I've lived long enough to have attended events in both arenas and, speaking only for myself, I much prefer Safeco Field. I am an architect, and have to say the Kingdome always offended by design sensibilities, while Safeco Field does not.
dude the reason why they did that was because they were afraid that the mariners would leave seattle unless if the built them a new stadium. so the kingdome was then useless so they destroyed it.
@FriendofEddieCoyle Safeco field is a beautiful stadium with a grass field, great sight lines and a great view of the city skyline. It's was the Kingdome not Fenway Park, you have a much better stadium now.
um for those of you that are bitching about the fatc that they did this in case you didn't remember a earthquake did severer damage to the structure and they were worried about the integrity of the structure.
i remember being really pissed at the time but i think qwest and safeco are bad ass stadiums now. i might have a different opinion if i lived in the area it got taxed though
"My goodness!" "That was absolutely the most amazing thing I've ever seen!" Ha ha those newscasters were funny. When I watched I was just like "...cool."
That dome really needed to go I mean come on visiting NFL teams even had to practice under loud rock music just to acclimate to the loudness of Seahawks games. Not to mention how distorted the baseball field was and how hot it got in their on summer days with 50000 people in the "puget puke". Stadiums have got to have the shortest life expectancy of any kind of construction I mean they just axed the Miami Arena that was built fucking 20 years ago!
well city planners and engineers aren't there for nothing - i think there was nothing that could be done to save it it was just too small and although the roofing could and should have been fixed it was certainly cheaper to just tear it down then enlarge it
Damn right! And no you're not an idiot. You're someone who understands the terms "rate of gravity" and "freefall speed". But we're crazy right? We're conspiracy theorists right? Good for you.
i watched this when i was a kid. my grandpa cried. we have a piece of the dome somewhere in our family.
My father helped build it.
That reporter definitely took that comment back a year later in September...

Rat Skates that has to be one of the most perfect Inland NW stories I have ever heard.
I can't believe this was over 10 years ago. I still remember it like it was yesterday. Lot's of AMAZING memories in that building!
When I looked and it said I can’t believe it’s been ten years, I was like dang this is an old

I remember watching this very channel at my friends house when I was 12. I'm 21 now and it brings back some awesome memories!

ain't that some god damn shit.
Who doesn't love a good implosion?
Lady at the end: Wao, nao dat wuz deh moes unbelyvabel theng ei hav evar sean en mi lyfe
not funny
One of the best places on Earth.
Kinda makes my "inner child" who remembers the Kingdome sad... >.>

hehe i went inside it once, and i was there when they blew it up. I love Seattle, it's such an awsome home town. : )
I saw this live on TV when I was 9 years old. I was living in Portland, Oregon at the time.
Some awesome memories of Seahawks and Mariners games there.. hard to believe that was almost 24 years ago
Hands down the greatest stadium implosion of all time.
I remeber watching that on T.V.
That was 2000! Boy its already 8 years ago!
This comment is written in 2008! Boy its allready 11 years ago!
i was only like 6 when this happand but still sad.they should have made it a tourist atraction or something. i live in washington
I give one last salute to that marvelous building. I mean yeah I know it was a dangerous building and everything, but the history that took place in that building was just amazing.
I remember this. Saw it when I was 13.
It was in 2000,cause in the next several days, the Mariners played their first home game at SAFECO field.
I remember going past it the day before this happened on the way to Mt. Vernon, and thinking "wow, this is the last time I'll ever see it." Then when I came back the day after it happened, it was so weird not to see it there.
k5 thats king 5 was that in washington state

Look at the traffic in Seattle these past few days...
The king dome was an arena that served a place for sporting events. The Seattle Mariners (including Ken Griffey Jr and Sr) played there for many years. As did the Seahawks.
King Dome was across the street from polar Sea who is still there today thanks to heros
R.I.P King dome
The second biggest explosion in Kingdome history. Of course number one was Bo Jackson blowing apart the place on a Monday night!
most unbelievable thing you ever seen until 9/11
4..3..2..WAIT WE LEFT A-ROD IN THERE!!! BOOM!!!
Amen. I saw that you are USAF. I was USN from 96-02. Are you active or reserve?
So many memories..........
That stadium was great. It's unfortunate they had to tear it down.
I remember the ground shaking all the way in west seattle that morning.
also it was dangorus there was tiles from the ceiling falling in the middle of fooball/baseball games
@cbarrett34 and Key has the suites, etc that the NBA wants correct? I still haven;t understood it besides the fact that the new owner decided to move the team just because he wanted to. Here in Indiana we used to have Market Square Arena, I loved that place...but i had no suites so down it went and up went the Fieldhouse.
the kingdome got brought down faster then Ashley Simpsons career.
So sad. This was almost the symbol of the end of the amazing Griffey-Hype.
May Dave Neihaus forever rest in peace.
They are keeping the old one as a museum.
....."damn forgot my wallet!" BOOOOOM!!!
lol
Wow Seattle, you could have put your basketball team back in there again but you tore it down, the team cried Seattle Center(Key Arena) still wasn't enough. I think the Sonic fan got screwed.
Wow, it's been 10 years since they demolished the Kingdome.
i was there in person
I love the mariners because I live in Tacoma and mariners played great baseball in the kingdome it was easier to hit. But it was inside. Baseball is an outside sport. So Safeco is outside and the roof that opens and closes
daAnder71 what is going on
I missed that dome I live in Vancouver and it looks alot like our stadium BC Place
Polar Sea did not detonate on a sabotage arson in dry dock but king dome on camera did.
i miss the kingdome they shouldnt have done that
and its almost been 10 years since they demolished TOWER 7!
The dome was great... but were still paying the damn thing off even after it was blown up.
Polar Sea Fire Aux Eng Room Did Not Detonate Port of Seattle, but neither did King Dome, such a deal
im from germany and i have a question :)
WHAT WAS THE KINGDOME ?
I sure miss the Dome. Good times.
Me here in 2021
That was just the acrylic ceiling tiles, the structure itself was solid.
I was not for getting rid of the King Dome and still am not fully over it, but I understand why they demolished it
Norm Rice, the memories
implosion
noun
1. a sudden inward collapse
18 years ago to the day I'm posting this
Dude, The WTC served it's perpose. The Kingdome was aswesome but ugly.
They were pretty much forced to name it that because of how much money Safeco Insurance gave them
To get to the boom 1:54
I was like 5when it went down but i missed it now i saw what i missed not as spectacular as i was expecting but i love seattle i live in olympia though

The interior shots were sad to see, they showed exactly where I sat for numerous Mariners games in the 1980s and 1990s.
remember going to the Kingdome as a kid with my family and the fireworks coming down from the ceiling when we got a home run. I went to the last game they played there not sure how we got tickets for that but it was a very bittersweet moment for sure. @sylicone221 Are you even from Seattle?
LOL, the King Dome came down fast!!!
dude the reason why they did that was because they were afraid that the mariners would leave seattle unless if the built them a new stadium. so the kingdome was then useless so they destroyed it.
@FriendofEddieCoyle Safeco field is a beautiful stadium with a grass field, great sight lines and a great view of the city skyline. It's was the Kingdome not Fenway Park, you have a much better stadium now.
Because they are filming the implosion from the helicopter.
Really? I heard it was cold that day. Can you confirm it?
i remember watcn this when i was 8, such a waste
um for those of you that are bitching about the fatc that they did this in case you didn't remember a earthquake did severer damage to the structure and they were worried about the integrity of the structure.
We're still paying for the Kingdome; it wasn't paid off when it was imploded...
Why do I always hear helicopters when ANY building is imploded? Just noticing a trend.
are they clear?
i remember being really pissed at the time but i think qwest and safeco are bad ass stadiums now. i might have a different opinion if i lived in the area it got taxed though
"My goodness!" "That was absolutely the most amazing thing I've ever seen!"
Ha ha those newscasters were funny. When I watched I was just like "...cool."
2:09 WHAT! OMG!

Been there many times. When they designed it they said it was going to be just like the superdome. Wrong.
well city planners and engineers aren't there for nothing - i think there was nothing that could be done to save it it was just too small and although the roofing could and should have been fixed it was certainly cheaper to just tear it down then enlarge it
Also, wasn't the ceiling falling down?
Stadium before CenturyLink (or Qwest Field) and Safeco Fields were built.
They weren't going to do anything in Tacoma.
I kinda miss Old Greystoke...
I hope the guy that used to put cheese on the nachos got out ok!
@jordythegiant10 Two things. A: I agree. And B: Not appropriate. We don't want to know that.
Damn right! And no you're not an idiot. You're someone who understands the terms "rate of gravity" and "freefall speed". But we're crazy right? We're conspiracy theorists right? Good for you.
Why did the King Dome get imploded?
CelesteK To make way for CenturyLink Field!
What a waste of 50 Million dollars remodel to just take it down a year later. That's the city of Seattle's City Officials for ya.
I have a big-ass chunk of that in my front yard! :)
and that the roof was falling apart
and they still can't knockdown the astro dome
@SpamZoid
Are you serious? The Kingdome was horrible. The titles fell down, and it was a eye sore.
@kylelachelt clear
