Is Social Media our Frenemy?
Hey guys my name is Allen Parr thank you so much for visiting my channel if you enjoy this video we release new videos every Tuesday and today I want to talk about some traps [some of which I have been guilty of] that I see so many people falling into when it comes to social media. I have 7 of these so let’s…jump…in!
1. Coveting - This is when we covet someone else’s platform, their success, their influence, their following, how many likes, comments and shares they get, etc. And what can end up happening is that we can fall into the trap of getting our validation or seeking some semblance of self-worth from social media. Let’s say you post something (post, picture, video) and you think, “man this post is about to go viral” and to your surprise you only get three likes and someone else posts some foolishness and gets like 300 likes within 1 hour. If you’re not careful you will begin to internalize this as people must not like me because they didn’t like my post instead of realizing that it very well may be that they never saw your post because of Facebook’s secret algorithm.
2. Venting
a. The Bible says a fool gives vent to all their feelings but a wise person holds them back…
b. It’s not the right forum for that
c. In your attempt to try to make someone else look bad you’re actually making yourself look bad and emotionally weak.
d. It’s an act of cowardice to put someone on blast without giving them the opportunity to defend themselves and share their side of the story.
e. Defaming someone’s character if it’s an individual and you’re stealing potential customers from a business.
So next time you’re tempted to vent write it all out in your status and then check the box that says post ONLY TO ME!
3. Comparing - One of the things that is easy to do is to compare your reality with someone else’s highlight reel. And so if you only look at what people post about their marriage, their children and their careers online you’ll think their situation is perfect not realizing that people generally only post their highlights not their lowlights and the enemy will start to play tricks with your mind causing you to think that your situation sucks because you don’t have what you think they have.
4. Squanders time - The latest statistics show that the average American spends 3.5 hours a day (9 for the average teen) on social media and probably 3.5 minutes a day reading the Bible. The Bible teaches us to “make the most of our time” and to “number our days.” We could spending that time investing into ourselves or investing into others so we need to REALLY consider whether this is the best use of our time.
5. Trap of Secrecy - over 20% of all divorces are the result of a secret online relationship. Social media is conducive to having secret relationships with so-called friends or old acquaintances that your spouse or significant other knows nothing about. Trap #3 is the COMPARISON TRAP…
6. Distracts us from building relationships - You can be out with friends and instead of engaging in meaningful conversation you are distracted by scrolling through countless news feeds, snap chatting with someone across the world, looking up a photo on pinterest or following someone’s post on Instagram. And what this does is it sends the message to the other people that they are important enough to deserve your undivided attention.
7. Co-signing/support - 2 Cor. 5:20 - What we like, share, and support is not only a reflection of you but as a Christian it is a reflection of Christianity as a whole. So when we like something that has a message that is worldly or inconsistent with the Bible (such as the law on same-sex marriages) we are putting our stamp of approval on this saying that we are in agreement with what someone else posted which has the potential to lead someone to believe that all of Christianity is in support of it because you are a representation of a bigger group of people.
Before I was a Christian, I was jealous of everyone who got more likes on their posts than me. I even got jealous of my best friend. However after I came to know Christ, it doesn’t bother me a bit anymore. We are all unique and it doesn’t matter how many likes you have. Honouring Christ is what matters.
I’m glad, Christ unburdened you from those expectations. My brother was shot and killed by police after having a drug induced rage, moments after I left him for a lunch.
So samesies!!!
@@kelseymusulman7694 I'm not a Christian or in any other religion, but I respect your beliefs, and stay well. Even as a none Christian who uses social media at times I'm not envious because somebody had more likes then me lol.
@@kelseymusulman7694 I'm sorry for your loss. One may be worse than the other, but we should be grateful even for the smallest victories since becoming envious of other people's likes is a real thing.
Stay away from social-media namely Instagram. I deleted mine, and I feel a lot better. Think of how depressing it is scrolling through posts that don't relate to your life but, feel the inclination to like it. Do these people matter to you? Do they pay your bills? Are you close with them? Do they even care about you? Most likely no. Life is way too short to be miserable.
we all just need to put down our phones even of its just for a few hours
Indeed Luke! So true.
The venting is a big one I see. It so quickly leads to anger/hatred.
I pray that God would give you more influence and would lead you to more christians. You have a God-given genius of delivering God's word in a very powerful but concise manner. I have been watching all your videos. You are clearly a salt and light sent to the online community. God bless you.
aumarivero thank you so much for those kind words. It is a pleasure and a privilege to have the opportunity and platform to share God's truth with the world in this manner. Thank you for your support of this ministry and God bless!
I quit social media for my new years resolution 2021 - it's now almost April and I don't miss it one bit
I'm telling you you're not missing anything. For real. I'll also join the club. Even non Christian people are starting to do this. So keep going you're not missing anything. You're avoiding a lot sins by this
I had FB ,since i gave my life to christ i no longer use fb.
Simone Cole god bless you.i also just deleted my facebook account .
Me too bro
Simone Cole really good doeu then if u feel spiritually renewed then?
Glad I was delivered from all of those social media platforms of fb, ig, snap etc... It had me suoer distracted like first thing in the morning checking for messages, news feed, likes etc. God has away of finally getting us back in line as Christians. I dont miss it at all. The foolery, left field thoughts and make believe reality world. Thank God for deliverance
good, facebook is a shitty platform
This is so good, and so true! Since giving my life to the Lord, I also don't use any social media (other than UA-cam). I have had failed relationships in the past due to social media. That seems to be a common theme and dilemma with many people I've talked to. My main requirement and stipulation for my next romantic relationship: Any man I am open to pursuing me will have no interest in social media, and will be serving God with his whole heart, evident by his lifestyle. Any person all over Facebook and Snapchat is the biggest turnoff in the worst kind of way for me, and it's apparent what their mind is set on. I want to see the Spirit of the Lord all over my future mate! Social media is a deal.breaker. I don't want or need that corruption. Yuck!
I agree. such a turn off for a man to worry about what other people are doing. I see a lot of women getting mad cause their man didn't stop working long enough to comment on their post......let that man work! I lose respect for a man if he cant put his phone down. low drama people re NOT on social media. there are men out there who don't do it.....don't settle girl.
This one is so True! Great video. Social media can be used for the glory of God when we share words of encouragement and blessing with others.
Cory Jackson We can also see how to pray for others.
I've been struggling with Facebook addiction, never thought there was such a thing until I realized how much things I've missed over spending more time on Facebook than reality. This video helped me realize what i need to do. I need to get rid of what is holding me back
Amen!
Honestly every time I go on social media all I see is Bible verses and inspirational words from God
I deleted my facebook a few years back after i spent 5 hours on facebook just looking at my so call friends i don't really know
Allen you look like a younger version of Denzel Washington, everybody has there twin lok
He reminds me of Dennis Haysbert but now that you've mentioned it, Denzel too.
You tube is the way to go. Nobody takes things too personal on here because 9 times out of 10 we won't ever meet each other lol
I agree however, I do use social media wisely now.
Thank you. This has shown me a number of things I need to be more careful with when using social media.
This is GREAT!!!!!! All 7 are on point. Thank you for this. We live in a selfie look at me world. Its the same thing they teach us at church about people posting the hihlight reel and how we get caught up saying; I wish the this or thats of what they do or have.
I needed this message!!! Everything you said hit home! Thanks so much!
Wow!!! This is mind blowing! Oh my! That's is why you do what you do!!! You be preaching the straight TRUTH!Help us Lord!
When I feel like I'm on social media too long I usually go on a Prayer walk it helps me put my eyes back on the Lord I leave my phone at home and just go
I fell for that comparison trap on Facebook. So glad I'm free from that now
Thank you for sharing. I so agree. God bless you my brother
Great words and straight to the point. We really need to guide our time on social media wisely, and focus on worthwhile things.
Agreed! We have to be careful not to get sucked in or buy into the lie, as enticing as it may be. Better to play it safe and stay away from social media, when can. Good to be informed but tread carefully.
Thank you for the reminder/advice/warning! God Bless ❤️
Thank you for your videos, these are precious wisdom!
Thank you for this, I can have something to share on our Sunday School
I am teaching women and this is the most concise one to explain it to 13 -15 year old girls
Some UA-cam comments have people in suggestive positions or their actual body parts in their profile pictures and one mere glimpse at it, not even direct eye-contact, stays in my head for a while.
yesss! this is true !! social media is making every depressed and angry . isolated and jealous.
some people are immune to the sicomes confess that is social media, but if you feel like its causing you problems , you probably need a nice long break from it . And and you never know maybe you ant want to use it at all after.
I need to delete my social media as well , so this is not condemnation, just an observation . peace 🤗🤗
Maybe not delete but just regulate it so that it doesn't become such a major distraction.
THE BEAT by Allen Parr either or . lol both will have positive results !
I just a whole bunch of your videos !! always great content
Thank you for this!
In reading the comments I feel the need to share this thought.
Well, this isn't an angry rant so please don't take it that way, Social Media in and of itself is not evil. Its how we use it that determines whether it is "evil" or not. Social Media is simply a tool of which we can choose to use either to share the Gospel or conform to the World. Notice he never said to not use Social Media, he simply stated to be wise in our use of it. God calls us to use wisdom according to His Word in everything we do and to be weary of what we do. So if we use Social Media wisely, it can be a tool through which God can use to spread his Gospel through all the World, we just need to be good stewards and remember that we are representing God and doing it for Him, not for our own gratitude. With Love - Jared❤
amen! i myself is saved through Jesus Christ because of social media (tiktok to be specific) was a former catholic but now is a Christian 🤍 but somehow it can be too overwhelming because of the mix contents we see in it. That's why a lot people would rather not be in it including myself to avoid back sliding and from going back to my previous life.

Great one! Conviction is something else! Thank you Sir!
Thank you!
Thank you🙏🏼
This was good, all 7 on point!!!👍
Thanks so much Mia. I appreciate that encouragement.
I have actually stopped social media less than two weeks ago. at first I felt free from the noise but now I'm feeling sadness and isolated. I see now that the people I thought were friends were just aquaintainces. it is isolating not knowing what's going on. so I'm trying to acclimate life in a world that is focus on screens then face to face interactions
when you feel that way....learn something. to cook, dance, exercise. much more productive. I feel like im the only one who doesn't have social media sometimes, in fact some women shun me for it. the devil is a lie.
I am 15 and I feel my self slowly slipping back to love stuff- I moved schools and o worry about ppl asking me who my favourite celebrity was-( cuz I don’t follow any celeb) please pray for me that I don’t care- cuz I don’t wanna! But go yes and have fun and if you do have social media-watch who you follow and the content- more Bible verses and Christian people who will encourage you. I recently just decided to not use social media for a month. Because of a tiktok I saw so many others are doing it too.
Well said Bro🙏
Preeeeeeach, Mr. Parr!
+Stella Davis Thanks Stella!
Very interesting (and challenging). The 'Venting' one pricked my interest. Loneliness is an epidemic in the present time and people sometimes only have the likes of Facebook etc to reach out to. It's too easy just to tell people to 'step away form social media' but then they may not have any outlet to get their feelings out, and bottling them up leads to big problems.. We need to tackle a bigger issue of 'building real friendships'. You could say even commenting like this is in some way 'venting', so we do need to be careful with this one.
These statements are so true
I love this message.
This is very important.
Ameen wonderful said!
Amen Great much needed video
You are talking directly to me.
I have FB i use it to promote the Love of Jesus Christ, to put a smile on my friends face with beautiful pictures of God' s creations, Verses and Bibel Quotes and beautiful music. I don't post much about myself sometimes a competition i did with my horse or Pics of my pets. I think that Social Media can be a good tool to spread the Word of Jesus Christ and keep in touch with Friends that lives far away. You can create empathy with people through videos and I notice that a lot of positive things are contagious. People who used to post more superficial stuff are posting good things now. Goodness is contagious. If you do it properly, it can be a good thing for me. You're using UA-cam to reach people, so you'll understand what I mean. I use it for Jesus Christ, for my friends, family and to reach by heart all others.
I do the same. Let us keep spreading the word.🔥💕🔥
Allen, brother. You keep it up. Christ in you and me. That's what it's all about. We focus on Christ, not the world. The social media is a powerful addiction, and it's designed to be an addiction. Very few can use it sparingly. But whatever our addictions, and they can be as seemingly harmless as food, exercise, telephone calls, work, gardening, hunting, fishing, movies, or the newest social sites online, these addictions will keep us from Christ's best. We need to hear more, Allen, keep your focus, bro.
My day was pretty stressful. Thanks for this:)
You're welcome my friend. Glad it helped! Thanks for watching.
Great perspective!
I was very concerned when i looked on my daughters facebook and observed the people that she may know now i understand these are random people although seeing pictures of older men turned my stomach i approached my daughter on the subject and pleaded with her to be discerning in who she adds she now lets me know if there is a problem. I am a big believer that secrets tell lies and nothing good comes from them we need to teach our children discernment or they wander here and there😇
Very true. We must watch carefully what our youth are doing on social media.
Very well said
My most hard thing about social media is time 🙁
Set limits on your phone that helps! And pray too
Always sharing relevant topics
I quit posting all together almost after I got saved. The deeper I’ve gotten into scripture and Jesus the less I want to post. The only thing I post is scripture and sermons or videos like these. I am gonna share this. The lord fulfills you. Brings peace and joy. I do not need the approval or affirmation of people I don’t know
I use facebook and twitter but only to look at dog photos and bible verses #ImaJesusFreak
There's a girl I met at my church, and we became `Facebook friends'. She is always posting pictures of her grand life. Boasting about her new marriage, great job, new house, vacations. It's the most annoying, most prideful thing I've ever seen from someone who claims to be a Christian. Posting something here or there is one thing, but posting ur entire life? When others have not what you have? It becomes a bit much and I think it's from a place of trying to invoke envy. But bless her heart.
I don't normally ask for much but pray for my mother. Right now she is extremely addicted to tik tok and believes everything that comes off there is true. Believe me, I hate seeing her going down that road and it makes me angry and sad because I was once the exact same way.
The best 👌
2 John 1:12
Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink. Instead I hope to come to you and “talk face to face”, so that our joy may be complete
Its a good one
thks it was so educative and true if i may ask can u do a video on modesty ie make up and dressing
Wow!
i have actually seen people in church checking their facebook account and texting while the preaching was going on.
I must admit that I've been guilty of this a few times as well. It's a shame how social media has taken over our world.
good speech
I agree with you
You got stamped...lol. Nicely done 👍
True.
so true
I’m leaving discord this week for good and uninstalling the app I’m leaving people who i don’t even know that I made connections with but these are the same people that used me as a means to cope with their issues…the same people that may know God but don’t know how to turn to him to help them with their issues…the only thing I can do is pray for them
I’m doing social media and Christianity research for me and my coach, but not just for her benefit, for all interested in our group. You are the first video that has come up.
I do have ‘issues’ with your ‘flirting’ online affairs startup. I have said to females and people who travel the world posting epic photos of scenery on Instagram that ‘I like their pics’ which doesn’t necessarily mean I’m flirting with them. I’m just saying. Also with the ‘what are you wearing?’ I have used that to ask someone what brand of clothing they are wearing and where I can get one.
This is going to be one long research..
Cool made a video on this as well!
that last one made me question myself
Amennn !!
My Facebook is deactivated for almost 2 weeks, I want to close it for a month., for a detox. It's consuming my time and also comparing a life from others and posting a lot. I'm thinking if I should close it permanently.
Social media is one reason why so many people have PRIDE today.
Loved most of this video! Haha I learn a lot about perspective. I, as a Christian, hate the terminology, “worldly view.” All of our experiences, behaviors, knowledge, and understanding of God was brought to us along our journey on earth. I understand resisting conformity, but to believe you think in a belief above you’re own understand with conviction unmeasured? It’s easier to say that then to follow through. I used to think, gun to my head,” is God real?” My answer would be yes. Gun to my loved ones head, “is God real?”..... No. to save the life of a loved one I would say no! Denounce God as ruler over my life and risk hell. If I can be more understanding then God, then what does he rule over my life?
Amen
Every so often. And when I do use it it is only Christian stuff. When other people like my husband wants to watch something with me I remind him that it has to be God approved. He gets a little upset from time to time cause he sometimes wants to watch stuff with me that I feel very uncomfortable about. But I try to treat him God's way. Then he is ok with it later.
🔥🔥🔥
I use to have fb but after relizing the danger and cons of it i deleted my account, and i have a step mom who is on it 24/7 like shes more on it than 10 teens combine like she waste her life on media thats why i dont use media anymore that offend bc of my mom its bad.
Than she has the nerves pretending to be me on that trust me it isn't wroth it guys you can ruin someones life and thats not a sign from god amen god bless you all
All he said is true
All people can agree to this
the time trap fits me
Omg. I was like, is this guy an actor that I know? He looks so much like Denzel Washington. Unbelievable.....
could you please do a video answering the question whether it's right for us to listen to secular music and still uphold the Christian faith
Lauretta oyile, hey listening to secular music isn’t a sin but James 4:4 states that we should not be friends with the world because we would be enemies of God and personally when I stopped listening to worldly music I’ve improved more on my spiritual journey
I don't believe all social media is bad. I like Facebook because that is the way I keep up with family all over the country. I am careful about who I allow onto my page as "friends". 99% of the people who request, I delete. I also block pages I don't want to see again. I do have a Pinterest page, and that is full of Bible verses and quotes.
Inspiring Words from Denzel Washington
No lol
I also believe that social media causes jealousy too? As well to me
Are you allowed to use social media if you're doing good on the app and not sending anything bad or looking at anything bad
It's the time trap for me..
but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1 John 1:7 KJV
🕊️🙏🏻❤️
Hi! I've been struggling with social media addiction for about a year now. I decided to put a time limit every single day (although I didn't accomplish it every day) I really wanted to know if 3hrs a day on social media is fine for me. I also decided that I'll put more time reading the bible more.
Read the Bible more social media can be a distraction. I am also doing the same also pick up reading it’ll help keep your mind from wondering.
thank you pastor, I'm a Facebook user. starting to feel guilty being it. cutting down on it. So I quit. or should quit all the way?
I wouldn't quit. I would just cut down and make sure that it is not taking away from other more important things in your life.
So, its ok to worship Satan just a lil bit?
I see a lot of parents ignoring their children cause they are too worried about social media. it saddens me. I have done just fine without it. even in my carnal days I wouldn't have social media......we called it evidence. how many people have gotten busted because they posted something stupid? how many people have lost a job or not gotten hired cause your facebook page is a liability to the company? wake up people. like I said I have done just fine without it, good job, money in the bank, and most of all I think people respect me cause I march to the beat of my own drum, not somone elses drum.
Yo Allen Is having social media serving the world?
Hey Parr where are you from?
I think Christians need a dedicated social media platform.
I personally have been felt lead to start this project as a web developer and have started. Though much support is needed. Expecting God to do the rest now as I've done my best.
I rarely use apps like Instagram, snapchat or Fb and Twitter but on Instagram all I have Is posts about bible verses and sermons, is that ok?
I would really like to know if its a sin or dangerous to watch secular movies, tv shows, TikTok or UA-cam?
Of course, because these things will never feed your soul .
Just so you know I was paying attention.... #4 has #3 in the graphic. :)
There's also the trap of IDOLATRY!!!!!!!
You can use social media for good but don't go strolling through fb for entertainment. Get God's word out there and get off soon after you post . Don't deceive yourself. Be blessed 🙏🏽☝🏽💯
I use Discord and I'm still a christian
