Wonderful joyful music, thank you for sharing! I recall a delightful occasion meeting him in Lincoln cathedral after singing his music as a chorister for the bishops enthronement in the 1970s.

Love Herbert Howell's music. Dance No. 2 is divine. Thanks for posting Chris.

All this 'jewel' is truly a heartbeat away, same great emotion I always feel when hearin his 2° Piano Concerto marvellously performed by Maestro H. Shelley. Still remember at first hearin many years ago a big knot in my throat, so that I started cryin. Same in his incredible 'Paradise Rondel'. Howells is a real genius 'n poet at one time.

Well remember that first broadcast. Also on the same composer of the week was Howells Piano concerto no.2. Fell in love with both immediately and have adored Howells ever since.

You've sent me hurrying off to listen to that concerto. I actually saw Howells at the 1977 Gloucester Three Choirs sitting in the cathedral. He was 84.

@@webrarian The concerto is my favourite Howells composition. I find it sad, nostalgic, invigorating. It transmits so many conflicting emotions. I was so intrigued that I wrote to Howard Ferguson who helped Harold Samuel rehearse the work before its first performance in 1925, and asked if he had any knowledge of the inspiration behind the work. But he wasn't able to help.

5:43 bought me. It’s so graceful.

Yes. That's the movement that the BBC kept playing that made me want to record it. I'm glad you like it.

Dance 2 sounds INCREDIBLY SIMILAR to Nigel Hess' "Ladies in Lavender" theme, don't you think?
