  • Woke up in Bryson City, NC to chase the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad's Nantahala Gorge excursion, powered by the Queen of the Smokies, Baldwin-built 2-8-0 type S160 steam locomotive number 1702. The day started off with a chase of the 1702 moving lite from the railroad's engine shops to the excursion consist, which, all in all, meant I just about chased 1702 along the entire GSMR system in a single day. Pretty cool! Thanks for railfanning with me today, and don't forget to like, comment and subscribe if you enjoyed the video!

      @@FloridaRailfan highlight of my trip. Chased it for a little but down the tracks, then went to see some waterfalls and when we got back to Bryson City it just crossed the tracks to the depot. I hung out for awhile and seen them move it on the turn table to park it for the night.

    Again fantastic shots. Good ol s160, little thoroughbreds.
    Were goin up here in March to escape from bikeweek, hoping to catch a ride on GSMR, likely a diesel tour.

      @@FloridaRailfan oh thatd be fantastic. Im just hoping theres no early spring snow that week , which always seems to happen. Also gonna try and hit Saluda and Yadkin... just have to come up with "valid reasons" for the misses to 😄. Thankfully your vids point out some great spots on YVRR

    • @FloridaRailfan
      @FloridaRailfan  3 роки тому +2

      @@schnauzahpowahz Yeah, chasing YVRR is pretty easy just as long as you're up early with them out of Winston, or intercept them in Elkin for the return trip. Also might be worth your while to check out Blue Ridge Southern, especially if you'll be hanging around Bryson City / Asheville.

    This was the first railroad I ever rode on and I went back to it in 2016 when they got 1702 running again, when I first rode in 2005 it had already been retired

    When going downhill, use lower gears instead of riding the brakes; doing the latter will wear out the brake pads and rotors much quicker.

      @@FloridaRailfan It's okay. Using the engine to slow down is like using the dynamic braking feature on diesel locomotives.
