Why would you welcome a pickup change from a Korean made guitar? PRS makes fantastic guitars in Korea and many people prefer them over the US versions, not to mention they aren't overpriced like US PRS' clearly are. Sort of surprised to hear you say something like that, it seems kind of...biased.
Out of all the nu-metal guitar players, I always appreciated Mushok's layered parts and how he didn't just play in a low tuning for the hell of it. His original Ibanez prototype people may remember from that cover of Guitar World in the early 2000s was super slick though.
I never knew that PRS had a hand in this line. Great looking guitar. I dig the finish and the tones. It stays clean sounding when required and doesn't get muddy sounding like other Bari's I've heard.
That pickup combo is killer. I was presently surprised how clear and huge the clean sound was for both pickups. The Alt 8 in the neck is something I never would have considered, but it sounds rad! This combo definitely can benefit greatly from some coil-splitting or parallel options, though.
I was thinking the same .. you can tell the previous owner really experimented to find a combo that worked! I got one of these "as new", and the stock pups suck. The bridge is too weak for metal and the neck is way overwound for cleans (sounds OK for distorted leads). I just put an active SD Blackout in the bridge, but honestly the DiMz in the vid sounds better. And it's a beautiful combo!
Michael "Mike" Mushok (born April 10, 1970) is an American musician who is the lead guitarist for Saint Asonia. He is best known as the lead guitarist for the alternative metal band Staind. Mushok has also previously been a member of the band Newsted.BAsically, I never heard of him
Great guitars! The holy grail of baritone guitars. Bought in a sale in 09 still have it. Replaced the pickups many times, settled on the PRS 59/09 set with PRS USA electronics. Have replaced the tuners with Gotoh locking ones. Schaller strap locks as well. Guitar is a Neck Thru construction as well. UK market sees them go for £699-£799, was offered £999 once by a Mushock fanboi, said no as I’m not getting one of the new PRS SEs. I bought mine for £399, reduced from £799. I missed out on his Ibanez MMM1 year’s ago, tried one, and it was amazing! Would love to get one of those!!!
That's a pretty nice sounding SE - I think you lucked out with the replaced pickups. Most of the early SEs had really muddy pickups. They've since improved a lot.
I concur, the Alternative 8 in the neck was a lovely dark sort of sound, certainly not for everyone but I think it would actually work in the applications most people use Baritone neck pickups for.
You got me on this one Austin! I was looking at resonators for something to change it up but the way you described how you use the baritone guitar with standard tuning etc. may very well be my next move. Thanks for branching out like you do on your channel love the versatility. Keep on rockin!
They also did a limited edition spalted maple veneer top version that was all naturally finished (only 25 made world wide). I have 3 mike mushoks and love them dearly. 2 with stock pickups and one with upgraded prs pickups (someone else did the swap). I prefer the thicker neck profile on these to the thinner profile of the 277. thanks for doing an episode on one.
I traded locally into one of these in the Brownburst, in excellent condition, with a slightly beat up Dean hardshell case. The pups were well replaced cleanly with the Seymour Duncan Nazgul and Sentient set. My trade, with a bit of cash, cost me altogether about $375 total. He was advertising it for $500 and said he was interested in trades too, so I went for it. I never had a baritone guitar before, and only played one for the very first time on the day I met the nice young fellow to do the deal. Love it, it's really nice, and sounds, looks, and plays great, and it is a nice new flavor in my collection and musical arsenal. I actually plan to use it for some MOR rhythm guitar parts, and perhaps some low pitched, twangy country licks. Not really what it was made for, but hey, I'm enjoying it for what it can do for my own personal musical tastes and pursuits.
He would have traded straight across with the original pups if he had removed the SD pup set, but I figured it might take longer to do the deal, cause some possible problems if something went wrong with the de-installation/re-installation, and I figured the now resident SD set and installation costs were well worth the extra $100 in cash added to the trade. I feel overall I got a great deal, and he was quite pleased with the guitar and HSC he received too. Love it when a trade is equitable and favorable to both parties.
@10:17 The longer neck on a baritone guitar doesn't make any room for more frets, because the frets represent a ratio of distance from the bridge in proportion to the longer bridge-to-nut distance, so every fret is slightly further away from the bridge than the same fret on a regular guitar, it's like the entire neck has been stretched along its entire length, not just added to at one end.
That Seymour Duncan in the neck pickup comes stock on almost all Schecter synyster Gates signature guitars(I have one)on both bridge and neck position and they're extremely hot pickups and they're really good for playing metal and heavy stuff like that.
Everything Music And Guitar Shenanigans I’m pretty sure the Synester Gates models come with Invaders if I’m not mistaken. Invaders are wickedly hot regardless. You can tell the difference visually by the enormous pole pieces and lack of SD logo.
I agree. The Middle position sounded best. I do like the overall look. It has an eye catching look when being played because of the binding on the head-stock.The neck appears balanced and is also appealing. JMO

Beware that doesn't look just like some innocent chipping! I've had an Epiphone with the finish cracked all around the neck and body seam line, also with some paint chipping. The previous owner had touched up the top to mask it off (it worked...) and, some time after I've bought it, that paint was also cracked. Pretty easy to put two and two together - there was movement underneath, the joint probably had separated a bit. It takes a nice bump to the neck, or a drop, for that to happen. I'd get rid of it ASAP, just like I've done to that Epi!
I’ve never understood the gigantic PRS heels either. I whine about it a little in my PRS DGT video series but as I played it, the heel really didn’t bother me which was surprising. They are ugly but didn’t notice it as I played.
What has happened is that neck has taken a hit that only affected that side. Then they did a glue job, and had to sand off the excess, that is why there is that flattened area with no finish. The little spots next to the pickup ring are where they could not match up any finish so they just left it alone.
wow!! okay maybe the guy who put on these pickups didnt make a good job soldering... but no doubt here the decission on which pups were applied was all right! sounds amazing
I could see being upset about a pickup replacement for an American made PRS. I spent just over $4,700 on the one I had. But for an SE? You're right, that would be an improvement.
I gotta say this is an underrated guitar I got to play 1 time and I was pretty impressed by it Almost consider buying it but I didn't need a 6 string baritone Because I already had an 8 string guitar so I don't see the point in it
I think the idea of the alternative 8 bridge pickup in the neck is to make it less muddy. Schecter use that config on some of their baritones. Talking of Schecter have you ever done a sustainiac guitar?
No worries I always play over the neck pickup unless some serious palm muting is going on then I tend to go a little more towards the bridge for obvious reasons. But I am mostly a lead player so I end up over the neck pickup and some guitars I have ended up overlapping the bottom of the fret board. To this day I am unsure why I do this but I've seen other players pick in that area as well. My Schecter is one I end up a little over the lower fret board. I thought it made me look weird playing until I saw Marty Friedman play and I was like "wtf" and I still don't understand how he even plays but it works for him. Good video you showcased it very well.

Not a Staind fan, during the shoegazing, anti- guitar solo era. I've heard a Mike Mushok clip and he can actually shred. Trogley, I hope Mom and Pop stores come back. You would have a great one because you wouldn't sell crap, have rare and unusual guitars, and if you don't have it, you could find it. Of course you would want to profit, but you don't seem like the C.E.O. golden umbrella type. You would be more concerned about getting a dream guitar into the hands of players.
Not a fan of Staind, but like the look of that model. Sad to see that these SE series PRS guitars aren’t well constructed especially since they were more than high end Squiers in price.
I don't care for staind either,or many popular bands after 97' or so...Have you ever listened to Built to Spill? They are my favorite band at the moment, their so damn good
@@wesleyAlan9179 I've never had the fortune to see them live, I know they don't do too many shows that's what makes them special I guess they don't care about making three minute songs for the radio and they don't care about touring every 6 months. I would love to see them live.
The original PRS neck design had a much smaller heel. Around 1985, they went to a larger heel to improve neck stability, tuning and intonation. Think of this way, a Les Paul neck gets some of its stiffness from the upper bout. A fender gets the stiffness from being a "D" shaped thicker neck. The PRS necks are often wide thin which needs more stability. The PRS single cut has an in between carve which is actually very nice. Knowing as much as I do about PRS guitars, Paul has thought about every aspect of this to the nth degree.
My friend I've been looking for one of these so long for cheap if you had gotten it a week ago I would have offered my Squier Contemporary Active strat in trade in better condition had I not have traded it into my local music shop towards another guitar. Still a nice one tho
Mike Mushok was the lead guitar player for Staind. And is currently (I believe) with a band called St. Asonia. Love Staind. First big hit: Mudshovel ua-cam.com/video/FuAC9YIC2Bs/v-deo.html One of my personal faves: Everything Changes ua-cam.com/video/faewCXX1mvo/v-deo.html guitar solo by Mushok at 2m (On the early albums, most of the guitar parts are in alternate tunings!)
That's a nice PRS. And I'm a guy who doesn't like PRSs, but that shape is pretty sweet. I'd like it more if it had 24 frets and pickups that make sense; like Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz combo. And, not a baritone.
The Trogly's Guitar Show: It might have been. But most of the SE line feels cheap Asian to me compared to a real PRS. I’ve never believed them to be just a step or two down. Even the fretwork is kind of weird to me. Just my opinion. The demo sounded pretty good though.
Describe how "cheap Asian" feels, like you mean you can't feel that all the plastic and electronics and stuff were made in Asia or made elsewhere with parts from Asia?
Before you answer, just know that even $4,000 custom Kiesels are all made with OEM parts from Asia and the price difference has to do with the employee pay difference, not part quality in the majority of instances
Dean Smith: It could be many things. I’m just a player though and not a luthier. It could mean the polyurethane finish and not the nitrocellulose. It could mean the quality of wood. It could mean that it’s all that plus a lighter guitar. It could mean that it sounds thinner through my rig compared to my 70’s Les Paul when given substantial volume. I put everything through the test before keeping a guitar. Some budget guitars are great! All of the SE stuff Ive ever tried never made the cut and never stayed in tune. I prefer the LTD line of guitars.
hey troggly i dont know if anybody asked you this today but how have you been ? how was your day?hope you had a great one and keep up the great vids sir
This series is kinda confusing me with all the different trades. I think that for season 3 (please let there be one) it would be a good idea to just stick to 1 trade. Just my opinion.
id replace the pickups before selling it again and sell the pickups seperate xD but that combo though god xD17k in the neck oeff i play alot of metal but i wont go over 12 in the neck for sure
Does anyone ever get mad at you when they see that you’re quickly flipping something for more than you paid? I think you said this thing cost you around $240 and now you have it listed for $399+ shipping. I’m certainly not judging you for making a profit by cleaning up the instrument and creating a better listing, just curious if it’s ever caused you any problems.

The Trogly's Guitar Show next question did you apply anything before the 0000 or just do it raw!? I picked one of these up 10mins ago
Actually sounds really nice.
I really can see this guitar beeing a real beast. But what is it with this pickups? It’s so weird man but anyways great review as always.
So tenor guitar when then?
PUT THE MUSHOK PRS PICKUPS BACK IN IT - STAIND'S LAST RECORD WAS RECORDED WITH THIS GUITAR (STOCK AS IS)
Staind is from my home town Springfield MA!! 🤘😎🎸
Would not have admitted that I'd never heard of Mike Mushok. LOL.
Can't be any worse than the zappa video haha
I never heard of him either.
I’ve had one of those before. Felt cheap so I had to take it back. Hello from Michigan!
Was it because the body was so light? The neck felt really good to me
The Trogly's Guitar Show: It might have been.
Not surprised you didn't know who Mike Mushok is. Doesn't seem like your style. Love the guitar though. Gotta find me one.
Try and get a les Paul raw power on the channel... I love mine.
hey troggly i dont know if anybody asked you this today but how have you been ? how was your day?hope you had a great one and keep up the great vids sir
This series is kinda confusing me with all the different trades. I think that for season 3 (please let there be one) it would be a good idea to just stick to 1 trade. Just my opinion.
Still would rock it!
What song is 14:20?
I mean the guitar looks cool and everything but don't really like it's sound
clean sounds cool for me but with distortion sounded.. not so full
id replace the pickups before selling it again and sell the pickups seperate xD but that combo though god xD17k in the neck oeff i play alot of metal but i wont go over 12 in the neck for sure
That can really chug!
Hes the guitar player for staind
Does anyone ever get mad at you when they see that you’re quickly flipping something for more than you paid? I think you said this thing cost you around $240 and now you have it listed for $399+ shipping. I’m certainly not judging you for making a profit by cleaning up the instrument and creating a better listing, just curious if it’s ever caused you any problems.
I'd rock it!🤘😎🤘
I need to get myself some baritones one day. I wish there were some off-the-shelf classical baritones, but as far as I've been looking, that's not really a thing...
SE= Student Edition
I have one. I love it. Bought it new. Btw, “SE” is Student Edition.
SRC?
Version. I know "In the Hall of the Mountain King" is from the "Peer Gynt Suite."
