CRA to crack down on COVID-19 benefit claim fraud

- The Canada Revenue Agency is planning new measures to check up on Canadians receiving emergency benefits during the COVID-19 crisis. But officials say the back-end 'clean up' of potentially fraudulent benefit claims promised by federal politicians won't actually happen until next year's taxes are filed.

They should have just made it universal. It is going to cost more time and money on investigating and “cracking down”
@Dapper Canuck permanent residents pay taxes too... international srudents pay taxes too through school..... people who has work visas pay taxes too.... dont ignorant they deserve help aswell....

the arguement here is about making it universal.... so meaning it should be allowed for everyone........ your arguing that since they are international students they should not receive any help from the government... you do realize that international students pay taxes too... ALOT OF TAXES....... hence they are helping us aswell...

I agree I’m still working 40hrs a week but I wanna change industries, but they’re is also hundreds of resumes for even basic jobs right now.
Charles Scott luckily I got the CERB emergency benefit in Canada but I still don’t know what ill be doing for work. There’s next to nothing unless you want to waste your soul working fast food for pennies and even then, most places arent even hiring.

This is going to cost a lot $$. I know people who got $3+ on one cheque. I was in an odd situation I was laid off ... I never submitted my ROE ! My employer did on my behalf and I got the cheque. I called them immediately and told them I shouldn’t of got it. The lady said “we don’t usually make these kind of mistakes, you probably qualified.” I explained my situation and that I did get let go but only for a small amount of time (still paid). She gave me a contact for Unemployment office ... I called and called spoke to 3 different people and they told me it was fine. I’m def not spending that money, the bank is holding it for me until this is all cleared up. They are making these mistakes then will come after you ...
One thing the government doesn't forget is that they will get their money back CRA will get you
CRA has no problem cracking down on the poor people. They know they can’t afford lawyers to defend themselves but the wealthy who evades millions and billions of taxes through off-shore tax havens, those are the CRA will not bother to touch because it will cost them a lot of resources and money to investigate and prosecute.
They can’t get back money from crooks who don’t work legal jobs and do not do their taxes
Just because the ATM spits out more money than you have actually in your bank balances doesn't mean you can keep those extra money!

Govt orders economy to shut down and puts people out of work, all while they continue to collect their own pay cheques and violate their own orders.
They can't audit all the existing fishy files as is, I don't know how they plan to take on this capacity unless they're just going shift all their auditing around crb stuff. Which would seem kind of silly as that's a lot of work on each individual file to recover very little money relative to other tax evasion files.

Self-employed CERB recipients who have filed their 2019 taxes should be able to easily amend their return by filing a T1-ADJ form on which they can reduce the expenses they claimed so that their net income rises above the $5,000 eligibility threshold
I know people that did it,making 4x the amount i make,then took advantage of this,truly sad.
In the midst of a crisis you would hope people would be honest! That is the bottom line. Don’t take what you don’t deserve. We are struggling as a country we should be pulling together. We are all struggling we but only take what we are entitled to.

Hello I have a question whether I am eligible. I meet all the other requirements however I called my manager near the end of March if I could come in to work and she said that she would get back to me as the demand in the store was low. Obviously she never did get back to me because the virus/lockdown happened. Everyone else that was working in the store was laid off but I wasn’t because I had not started to work yet because she did not get back to me. Does this make eligible?

jennifer kash Hello Jennifer. I did call the CERB phone line and the agent told me I wasn’t eligible so I did pay back the amount I was given. It worked out though because now I have a full time job. All the best

There was an article yesterday by a credible or at least seems to be credible source , that CRA was going to lump it , which I couldn’t believe that they put it out there. Asking for problems ..

So a person who has worked hard since the start of 2020...and had insurable hours i could have used in this time...am i to understand i am lumped in with people on welfare who had NO insurable hours and am expected to pay it back?...i know im not the only one in this situation...
It is my understanding if you get 1000 from unemployment ever 2 weeks, the service canada people shoved you through with everyone else who had no insurable hours worked and never even looked at the "regular" benifits package that you applied for.
Middle class working households will be held responsible come tax time....mark my words.
Guy I don't know if I'm in trouble because I had left my job due to fear of Covid 19 but my job doesn't fire people since it's essential (IGA) but I applied to EI to get some money for my family and still do so will I be punished as well? Was waiting for Corona to be less of a problem to go back to work...

I was a student and I applied for it in late april. Received a letter that I was not accepted. Then I got lucky and found myself a job after that. A few days after that I got a letter telling me I got accepted and 2000$ went into my account. I Hope I dont get accused of fraud.
