It wasn't. John Howard's seat had a margin of only 4.1%, while Portillo's had 20+%, I think. People were expecting Howard to be in danger.

    • @echarts3710

Aussie version can be looked more successful considering John Howard was a Prime-Minister (while Michael Portillo was a Minister of Defence) and had the Bennelong seat for 33 years.
However the British version was more and more shocking. Before the elections, polls were saying that Howard could likely lose as MP and PM, while Portillo was a promising candidate for Tories and his seat was seen as "safe seat". But yeah, both of them were great "single-member constituency" moments.

it was probably sweet for both realities...labour crossing the threshold and the PM falling. It is a humiliating loss: just asking Kim Campbell (1993) Canada, George Bush in 1992 and Al Gore in 2000. John Mcain almost lost his own state this past 2008. Actually the only people who won in NSW was the shooters party. The Labor didn't get many seats. The nationals lost seats and the liberals didn't gain anything. Because of this law called “WorkChoices” which was basically this amendment that gave employers freedom to do whatever they wanted with their employees such as getting rid of unfair dismissal laws and wages cut and trade unions being destroyed. It was a disaster to the working class and many people lost their jobs. And Labor promised that if they’re in power in 2007 they’ll get rid of WorkChoices. And they did.
