I recently adopted an 8 year old blind illigers macaw. She’s never had anyone try and work with her, and was previously going to be a breeder, but blind birds make terrible breeders so it never worked out.
I had to use a modified form of command-based target training for her, in a way that’s different than my other 2 blind birds, because she’s terrified of everything.
After she caught on, her personality completely changed. She didn’t have toys for years, and now shreds wood toys all day. she’s had to re-learn how to use her beak for something other than just pure survival and a means of transport.

My Quaker is 3 years old and the first trick I taught him was target training. Willow is afraid of moving chairs and I still move the chairs around daily because it’s life he has to be around chairs.

My baby grey was TERRIFIED of brooms. The noises she made... lol I couldn't help but laugh it sounded like she thought she was going to die. This was before I knew about target training (and before she was officially mine, but I was one of her caretakers) so my method of getting her over the fear was putting a broom in her line of vision all the time. Plus, just making sure she was present whenever the broom was used for it's intended purpose at the appropriate times. Now she doesn't even flinch about them anymore.

Training horses, this is often an issue with new owners... Once I had to work with a rescue that was scared of flower bushes. Just a lot of reinforcement and letting the natural curiosity take over and reward that courage to go towards it.

I got a baby Quaker parrot a couple of months ago. The breeder said she'd never seen one with her coloration. Green/gray with blue wing feathers and tail feathers with a sea foam color on her back. I bought your Seasonal Feeding System and she is absolutely loving it! She eats all of her chop every day and she loves the Organic Pellets. She got a clean bill of health from my vet.

This such an important topic with great advice and super helpful for adult birds too!! Our almost 20 yr old conures were terrified of SO many things before we started flight training with BirdTricks and it was a huge part of our process to begin teaching them how to overcome fears and be more emotionally resilient to scary things/situations. Our relationship with our birds was totally transformed using the target training method just as Jamie explains here, as well as exposing them to the “noun experience” which is covered so well in their baby bird course. We are forever grateful to have learned about this “biggest mistake” and correct it-now we can travel with our birds, let them enjoy outside time in our busy neighborhood, and even run our roobma without them freaking out... all thanks BirdTricks' desensitization training :)

I would love to see a video of fixing this after it has already been an issue with an older bird, a young adult. Our Jenday conure screams/is freaked out by a lot of things. Any of us wearing heats, sun glasses, the bicycles when they move, the mail man truck, the ups truck, the fed ex truck(and employees from the above mentioned trucks) , joggers , anyone walking/running past the house etc..

As a new quaker owner! This advice is amazing to give, this may be my first ever parrot ive owned but im prepared for the patient and bites! And as a past dog owner/trainer i do agree, my new baby quaker is still scared of hands, which is ok because we are still new with each-other however, since he’s a baby the only way i can get him out the cage (to go play on the gym when he’s very energetic) is by picking him up, anyways im getting off track, yes this advice is amazing and very helpful! I went to this exotic pet place in Virginia Beach. There was this giant area where people were allowed to handle the birds for sale. No one respected the birds. I saw one person chase a baby cockatiel around as it ran for dear life. I went to that bird later, and it was horrified when I offered it millet. Another person, who said they had 4 parrots, was yelling at a baby Amazon when it nipped and slipped off her arm.

Birds intentionally poop over the edge of surfaces and sticks and stuff because predators can smell their poop if it's near them. Same reason why the don't shit at their sleeping place. It's against their nature to give them a diaper.

This is also true in training horses. They see the world binocular, so it looks like stationary objects jumped. Open one eye than the other to kinda see this. There's little more scary then riding a 1200 pound animal scared of a garbage can. It amazes me that though birds perceive the world differently, so much of the concepts in training transfer obliquely. A frightened bird won't be thinking clearly and may get hurt or hurt someone. Targeting focusses the brain and keeps the fear from dominating. There's no other feeling liike when a horse or a bird trust you to help them overcome a fearful situation.

I totally get this video about working with your bird to help them get over their fears. I did something with my Shiba Inu when she was 8 weeks old. I brought the vacuum out, and turned it on. My puppy ran! I left the vacuum on, went to puppy, and just gave a treat. Turned the vacuum off, but left it in the middle of the room. I turned it on about 3 hours later. She ran, I threw a treat. By the end of the week, she stayed in the same room when vacuum went on. She got a “High Value” treat when she stayed in room. She is 8 now. Vacuum is a non issue. It took a week of desensitization training. Training for baby animals takes time and patience..BUT, ALL YOUR TRAINING MAKES FOR A HAPPY, HEALTHY ANIMAL. 😘NANAJANET❤️😘.

I want to buy Macaw at the end of this year, but I really don't know how loud can he be. I know that Macaws shout and stuff and this is a natural thing, and I actually wouldn't mind if the Macaw shouted maybe like once or twice per day. However, I'm worried that it would get worse because if the Macaw will shout all day everyday loudly I wouldn't be able to keep it. Any advice of how to make Macaws less loud or shout less?

BT has a few videos from over the years about it. Here's a search with a few of them: ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=birdtricks+screaming
In general, larger birds are noisy less often but louder when they are noisy. That said, every bird is different so no guarantees.

Hello, I need an advice, I have a male yellow blue Ara 1,2 years he flies free on the stadium is very friendly, he is good friend with me and my bigger son, but he is not friend with my wife and my smaller son, so I bought a small bird for my wife a conure green girl 4 months with another separate big cage, but I cannot let them free outside the cage together because Ara boy is very afraid of conure, he attack him or maybe he understand that he lost my love for him I don't know but he is very nervous and he try to destroy his cage and he doesn't eat too much, what can I do to make them be friends is this possible ? I do not want to sell Ara because I love him, so please give me an advice. Regards, Ovidiu

UHG my baby has decided he doesn’t want to be pet anymore, or step up when asked unless there’s a worm on the my hand. When he was little he loved to snuggle. Now he snaps maniacally at my hand if I approach to pet or whatever. I’ve just gotten to where I don’t try, and just enjoy his closeness on my shoulder or head when he chooses. Sometimes I try a little pressure and release, by presenting my hand, and the moment he stops snapping, or if he finally stands still, I remove my hand as reward. Sigh. Is this just his personality and I should accept it? Or can you give advice?

Birds aren’t supposed to be snuggly. Stroking them and petting them all over, It’s sexual to them. So you may not want to do that. It can create bad behaviors.

As Fukai said, stroking birds in certain areas can be very sexual to them so it may be possible he's felt like you 'promised' something to him and he never got it. It's also very possible that you accidentally did something that spooked him and he didn't like it, without even realising it yourself. Birds can sometimes lose trust /so/ easily.

I was joking lol. I completely agree but just thought about the video Dave & Jaimie had just put out about clipping when I read this comment. It just seems like a hot topic right now more than ever with the release of BT baby bird course. I don’t think enough people put nearly enough thought into their pets before getting them. It’s almost like an impulse buy for people that wanna have something their friends don’t have or something & then don’t know what to do when their birds have behavioral issues…
