I have a black-headed caique, Buttons, a male, who is about 10 years old. He IS very stubborn and like your little girl, makes what I call piggy squeals when they don't get their way or you are trying to take something away from them. They certainly are VERY high energy! As for talking, it varies. The first thing Buttons learned to say was 'what are you doing?' because being a mischievous caique, we asked him this question a lot! Then one day he walked up to my chest, looked at me and said 'I'm Buttons.' It blew us away. We NEVER say that to him. We say there's the Buttons, he's the Buttons...but HE seems self-aware by referring to himself as Buttons! He also says 'what are you doing to Buttons' when we do food and water (he is one of four various parrots we have). If you are doing something to him that he doesn't like, he will say stop, but he seems to have his own accent and it comes out 'schtop.' He will also say 'what?' when you ask him a question sometimes and he will also say 'right' when you ask him some questions. He is my little monkey and I love him to pieces!!! I wish you a lot of luck and happiness with your little girl!
Michael Estey My brothers and father taught my girl to do a cat-call whistle. She’ll do it if I walk out of the shower 🚿 and things like that. Although one time, I was in line to get Popeyes at the airport and she VERY LOUDLY WHISTLED at this green beret in front of me...I turned about 10 shades of red and quickly held up her carrier to show it wasn’t me.
I have had my caique (keetu) for 16 years now and he is everything you say they are, he is not nippy but he will chew everything... including my mail that comes through the letter box!!

Been spending months researching the best parrot for me. I’m so drawn to caiques and their personalities/intelligence. How loud is your casque? I’ve been around conures and owned budgies and cockatiels for scale.. how does your caique compare noise level? Only asking because we have a sensitive neighbour and live in an apartment (sometimes work from home/study)
What a great video very informative! I would love to own a parrot myself but I never dared to commit to it yet. I really love intelligent animals and I can be very consistent with training them, but I am also a scatterbrain and lose interest after a while which is very problematic in such a situation. I think I'd love my bird too much to lose interest but I can never be sure :(
Ivar Huisman I have a super short attention span when it comes to hobbies and interests. I always find my pets keep me entertained. My oldest cat is 9 and still makes me laugh with new things she does.
Do you think its able to train a caique thats not raised by hand? I saw this other video about someone saying that they have worse, obnoxious behaviors(because theyre strong-willed) when theyre not raised by hand. What is your opinion on this?
I LOVE my Black Headed Caique, BUT, they are a huge commitment! I have 9 birds and it is very difficult to give each of them the daily attention they deserve. It takes at least an hour a day to change water and wash dishes, so that's usually the time l dedicate to spending time with certain members of the flock. Others are involved in different activities.
A question, are they "flighty?" I've heard budgies are a little bit skittish and they tend to take flight quickly and out of nowhere because they can be easily spooked.
Caiques sound similar in temperament to Hahn's macaws. BIG personality in a small package. My Hahn's, Taco, is an excellent talker and will argue as eloquently as a lawyer if you disagree with him.😂 I've had him 17 years now; love that bird! Yes! Goodness my girl has such a temperament. If I don’t let her do what she wants she sure let’s me know shes not happy! Lol! Thank you for sharing about your Hahn’s macaw :)
I have a black-headed caique too and I just wanted to ask the community if they have had a similar experience as I did. When my bird was juvenile he was everybody's best friend, even strangers. When he hit maturity just before 2 years old, that all stopped. He became very fearful of strangers, and if they tried to touch him, he will bite them. I also can't have him out when strangers come over to my house or he will actually attack them. I thought this was normal since they are a pack animal, but I recently met someone who said their caique never got like this. Just wondering if other caique owners noticed this same behavior change just before 2 years old? Thanks.
Kraig My girl is very strange . With new people she gets in attack mode most of the time, however not always . (She’s 3 on April 21st). Caiques are crrrraaaazzzy! Hehe
Do you think caiques are an okay bird for someone who goes to school for about 8 hours a day? I would be able to give it at least half an hour of attention before school, and well over 2 hours after. (Probably closer to 3 or 4) However, I worry that those 8 hours might stress them out. I've also considered getting 2 caiques, but that's double the work haha.
The Queen of Neckbeards You sounds young. Wait till you have finished school , started working full time, and have moved out. Then, based on whether you can afford a caique and have the time for one and the commitment for one, then decide
@@KelseyJonesrunescape Fair enough. I'm in high school currently. Are there any birds that would be good for someone in my situation, or should I hold off on them entirely?
Are Caiques prone to biting? I know it may sound like a dumb question but i just kinda want to know how often the bird might bite while training. if your Caique did bite alot, how long did it take for you to stop her from consistent biting??
My Princeton is 5. He says "pretty Birdy Birdy Birdy Birdy." And "come here" but he whistles beautifully. Not a whole song but abound 15 different small pieces here and there
Just gets through telling us that you have to be strong willed and really put your foot down and say "NO!" and mean it. Moments later, the caique drops her toy and Kjones says "No, you dropped it and 'm not getting it for you." Caique begins to argue and Kjones immediately stoops down and retrieves the toy for her. LOL, we know who wears the pants in your family.
What a great video 😍 Im really into getting a caique (for a year now) but still not sure. I have 2 parrotlets, but they hate each other! So 2 birdies are not for me (thinking about giving the older to boyfriend, so i could see him a lot, and selling the younger girl, cause she is still not so attached to me, and she needs a home, where she could be in a flock.) Ive been thinking about this almost since i got the younger. Help me. Do you think its a crazy idea?
Sonny Seabury my girl was $800 but it completely depends on your location. I always recommend adoption. Since I knew I’d have her for her lifetime (40 years) and made a commitment to her, I decided to raise her from hatchling
Does their behaviour change if you have a pair of them? Especially if you're gone all day and can only give them attention in the evening? Can you leave their cage open while you're out? Love your little caique:D
livvidd caiques, like all parrots, can be destructive. If you left them out all day without supervision, you’d need to have a special room for them that was parrot-proofed.
meg's utube ua-cam.com/video/s0jTcveidwQ/v-deo.html I have posted the potty training video above. I like having a caique because their plumage is gorgeous. I like having kiara, my caique, because she loves me unconditionally and is a free spirit .
Sonia Świerlikowska Thanks for the subscription! If there are any videos you’d like of kiara and I let me know. Forgive me for all the gaming content I do, but I try to post a variety on my channel. I appreciate your support. Hope that Q&A video helps you :)
I have 2 little Caiques a Black head female Caique and a White bellied Caique. I love them so much, they can be very needy and difficult if they have set their sight on something they want. But its all worth it for me. I call them my feathered children.
Where’s a good place to adopt from? I’m located in Texas and I’m in the market for a Caique or two. Is it better to keep them in pairs or does that have an effect on how they interact with people?
Chase Prollock it’s better to keep them in pairs. They’re a lot of work though and live for a very long time! Carl Cline is a great Breeder. Here is a link to his information www.birdbreeders.com/breeder/4787/boe-bird-ranch-marion-tx
Kjones Thanks for the reply! I’ve seen adoption costs around $1,000. Is that pretty typical? I’ve reached out to the breeder you recommended and I’m anxious for a reply haha
Chase Prollock Yes, that’s typical . Don’t rush into it! Take your time on thinking about this high energy/ work investment! These birds become family members because they are so much work and so smart ! You have to commit TIME everyday to them. And a lot of it!!
Kjones Thanks for the tip!! I am quite set on becoming a parrot dad because I have no kids and I love animals, and I don’t plan on having any kids for years to come 🤣
She has passed away since then, and it’s hard for me to talk about because I miss her very much. There is another video on my channel that addresses potty training and how I did it
I’m 15 and never had a bird before, I’ve always wanted a Caique but I have school for most of the day but once I’m back I want to give them all my attention and even when I’m busy with school work I could bring them with me or get my younger sister to entertain him. I’m away for 6 hours of the day. Is this the right bird for me? Please help with recommendations if not!!
I personally think that you should wait till you're older. Because these birds can live for like 30 years and there will come a time in which you have to go to college/uni or off somewhere. I suggest wait till you get a job and have a stable life.
Hi! I know we never know, but in your experience or opinion, do you think they may get along with a pineapple green cheek conure?(female named Maui). Ours, even our vet we loved, is also very smart, strong willed, we also have to say no to biting and after x amount of times we have to put her in the cage and follow our vets directions as she owns about 5 of her own. (different kinds as well). I was curious about your type of bird because when I was waiting at the vet, someone let me play with their's and it was amazing lol. I am a bird lover. I wouldn't get one till we had a house not a townhouse as we do have a nice big cage for our conure so she has room to fly and the appropriate size. Thank you!
Christine Marquez Motivational Speaker Caiques are crazy.... I do not recommend them around other birds. They will be sweet hearts one moment and terrorize you the next . They have horrible hormonal moments . Please google “the good, the bad, the ugly of owning a caique.” My girl is turning 3 in April 2020
@@KelseyJonesrunescape thank you so much for replying and your honest opinion. If we were ever to get another bird, like you said, I would have to check into in a whole bunch. But being eventually terminal I don't think my husband would appreciate me leaving him with 2 birds lol. And our conure who is 2 as I said is having those moments like never before. Today she was with me fine then bite my hand it was bleeding. 🤷. Thank you, now I know this bird would not be for us. Love yours 💕
Hi :) So I really want to get a Caique and I have a question. So, don't you need to have two of them? I heard something like that about them but I don't know if it's true...
Miss Poe oh dear. I have a bearded dragon, named jack. She’s so much more chill than my caique , Kiara! Kiara requires hours and hours of attention a day. She’s incredibly smart .
Hello from Norway 😊 just watched youre Video andme and my children have been thinking about getting a caique for about a year now. How do this birds interact with more than 1 human? Can they connect with the whole family? Would love to hear from you. How is youre caique by the way? Sincerely Linda
I have a 8 month old black headed we just bought it a couple weeks ago and it is screaming like crazy any tips on how to get to cut back on screaming? I have experience with large parrots such as African Greys and macaws. But this little guy reminds me of a conure does nothing but scream.
Okay I have a question on the strong will part, I am very stubborn myself and I'm able to tell my pet's no but the thing is I don't sound intimidating I guess I don't have a very intimidating voice, so does anyone know how to work on that? Or is it okay if you don't sound very intimidating to a bird when you're saying no?
It's about the follow up id say, and the effect "no" has. So if your "no" has a positive effect, as in, the effect you want it to have. Then that's great and it doesn't matter how it sounds to other humans, if the bird gets it its good. If not, either you sound to sweet or your bird is to stubborn and you need to put strength to your "no" by action e.g back to the cage, removal of the desired toy, and so on. Start with the vocal "no" and then add a vocal "no" with the action so the bird connects those. "no means stop or something not fun happens" is a que he needs to learn basically
Luna Dawg There are so many parrots that are returned to their breeders, surrendered to the SPCA or animal shelters. If you’re truly serious about getting a bird, I’d really recommend getting in touch with your local avian vet and inquire about adoptions or checking out local bird rescue groups/sanctuaries first instead. ❤️🐦
Great video! I have one question - as a bird owner (not parrots tho) I wonder how would a Caique feel about leaving her under someone elses supervision for around 2 weeks? I work at home, so I don't leave for 8-10 hours and back, but once or twice a year I have to leave my birds under my parents' or grandparents' care (they got the know-how, so im not worried about how they care about them). Why? Simply holidays - not every time it's possible to take a bird pet with ya :)
Hi, I adopted a 10 year old caique from a guy who didn’t have enough time to care for him/her. Some of the things he described would not be considered good parrot care. So I figured I could do better. After having the bird for a little while he started to display aggressive behavior toward me in particular not my husband or son. He was fine and then his eyes change and he bites me on the hand and draws blood. It really hurts. I got mad and scared him now he seems afraid of me and wants to attack when I’m close to the cage. What do I do? I was thinking of finding a guy that was interested in parrots to care for him. I’m not sure if there’s anything I can do to change his behavior. I don’t know what he’s been through to make him act like this or if it’s possible to change at this point. What do you suggest?
Brenna Tekley The only thing you can do is give him the best love and care you can. Understand that changing homes and being mistreated is extremely hard on a parrot . My caique is also aggressive at times, and likes to play rough, but I made a commitment to her for life. Parrots are not domesticated like dogs and cats, and they’re complicated creatures. Focus on his body language and ques. Put him up when he’s bad and reward him when he’s good. Be patient, and never hurt or abuse him for being an ANIMAL. Give him a loving , caring home he’s never had . You can only do so much with caiques, let alone parrots. Please give him a loving home :)
You said that you had a Cockatiel when you where younger. I have Cockatiels and thinking about getting a Caique. Are Caiques much more louder and make more sound than Cockatiels? 😊
They are not louder, about the same. However they have more potential to be louder. (Depends on the caique) The only thing I suggest is never to have your caique near your cocktiels because it will kill them! Caiques play ROUGH and can be super aggressive towards other birds
Maren Bleyl there are only two types of caique. A white belly and a black headed. They are a ton of work and live for many years. Think twice and do at least a year of research before commuting. They have the intelligence of a child and can’t be left in a cage while you’re at work all day etc:
@@KelseyJonesrunescape we have a three year old white belly. He does fine in his cage all day while we are at work. But they are somewhat demanding when you are home, and are not a "beginners bird", due to their stubborn and head-strong tendencies. You mist know intuitively how to handle them and not allow the bird to get away with bad or manipulative behavior. Otherwise it will be a much less enjoyable pet. Remember, it's pretty much a life-lonh committment! Generally speaking, I believe females are a bit more "behaved" than males, but for an experienced handler, the male may be more fun, as they seem to be a bit spunkier.
I have a black-headed caique, Buttons, a male, who is about 10 years old. @@KelseyJonesrunescape Thank you for your informative video! My fiance is thinking of getting a caique. Now he is weighing it more carefully, lol
I meant that your caigue is gorgeous!!!
Mine likes to do this thing where if you give him a treat, like fruit or vegetables he will shake his head and throw it if he's in a mood lol
What do you feed her?
Hi he is sooooo cuuute !
How much coast a caique ?
Where do you get them
How to potty train them
How do u take care of them
I have a black-headed caique too and I just wanted to ask the community if they have had a similar experience as I did.
Hehe
I have the same he was biting and now when I play with him he doesn’t bit at all
I bought them 2500 in uae
Too right they're strong willed! 😂 I have Zorro, a 10yr old little boy. He is my baby ♥ xx he's watching this video with me 😂 xx
My girl is turning 2 this year! The time flys. She’s my girl!
My young Indian Ring Neck (Violet), seems similar in behavior to yours. Thanks for the info.
I can't say no but i want one they look soo much funn xD
Are Caiques prone to biting? I know it may sound like a dumb question but i just kinda want to know how often the bird might bite while training. if your Caique did bite alot, how long did it take for you to stop her from consistent biting??
William yes they are
My Princeton is 5. He says "pretty Birdy Birdy Birdy Birdy." And "come here" but he whistles beautifully. Not a whole song but abound 15 different small pieces here and there
ChevyNova Scotia Awwww...
How much did she cost? I’m in the USA
Gorgeous bird. What's the general price range of one of them?
Sonny Seabury my girl was $800 but it completely depends on your location. I always recommend adoption. Since I knew I’d have her for her lifetime (40 years) and made a commitment to her, I decided to raise her from hatchling
Does their behaviour change if you have a pair of them? Especially if you're gone all day and can only give them attention in the evening? Can you leave their cage open while you're out? Love your little caique:D
livvidd caiques, like all parrots, can be destructive. If you left them out all day without supervision, you’d need to have a special room for them that was parrot-proofed.
YES. you want them to think they are part of the flock.
Definitely would like a potty training video. What do you like about having a Caique?
meg's utube ua-cam.com/video/s0jTcveidwQ/v-deo.html
I have posted the potty training video above. I like having a caique because their plumage is gorgeous. I like having kiara, my caique, because she loves me unconditionally and is a free spirit .
Nice vid!
And also GIRL you are getting a subscription 👌👌
Sonia Świerlikowska Thanks for the subscription! If there are any videos you’d like of kiara and I let me know. Forgive me for all the gaming content I do, but I try to post a variety on my channel. I appreciate your support. Hope that Q&A video helps you :)
Kjones Parrots and gaming are my 2 favourite things, so it's even better for me if you post things like that 😂
I have 2 little Caiques a Black head female Caique and a White bellied Caique.
I love them so much, they can be very needy and difficult if they have set their sight on something they want.
But its all worth it for me.
I call them my feathered children.
G.v.M ❤️ My girl is going on 3 years old soon! Shes a crazy bird, but she’s my crazy bird :)
I am quite set on becoming a parrot dad because I have no kids and I love animals, and I don’t plan on having any kids for years to come 🤣
you mentioned that you have potty trained your bird, can you give me a idea how or if you have made a video , is it available?
Please google “the good, the bad, the ugly of owning a caique.”
My girl is turning 3 in April 2020
Sonia Świerlikowska Hi, my caique parrot question and answer video may help answer most of your questions ! ua-cam.com/video/2T3aBv8by5Q/v-deo.html
Kjones thank you so much ❤ It surely help me :))
is there a gender difference. I am thinking to buy one this week from bird shop. I am gonna have wb caique. Thanks for all info from all.
They sound alot like iguanas. I have had 2 iguanas and they were nightmares but at the same time my best friends. So I think I could handle caiques.
Miss Poe oh dear. I have a bearded dragon, named jack. She’s so much more chill than my caique , Kiara! Kiara requires hours and hours of attention a day. She’s incredibly smart .
Yes jack, my bearded dragon is female but named jack lol!
my friend has one less noisy than my lovebird....but what a mess he s in ...its like taking care of an elephant ( similar work)
What is a "flock call"?
very strange.
I read that the caiques love to stay on the ground. Not on the head XD
Hi, I’m looking for a caique bird. Is this up for sale or adoption? If not can I please ask how and from where to get one?
Hello from Norway 😊 just watched youre Video andme and my children have been thinking about getting a caique for about a year now. How do this birds interact with more than 1 human? Can they connect with the whole family? Would love to hear from you. How is youre caique by the way?
Sincerely Linda
I think caiques are definitely open to a family dynamic
Sounds like my old cockatiel. Very stubborn bird
how did u potty train a bird?? srsly that's funny and cute
I have a 8 month old black headed we just bought it a couple weeks ago and it is screaming like crazy any tips on how to get to cut back on screaming? I have experience with large parrots such as African Greys and macaws. But this little guy reminds me of a conure does nothing but scream.
Is he Screaming for you Attention or just because? (wanting to narrow down the reasoning)
How loud is the loudest she's been?
Are caiques ok with allergies? Minor allergies?
Simply Blue23 I think so I don’t think they have any dander.. but sometimes just the feathers can make you allergic
You will get me that toy human slave ~caique
Ren Ramgotra accurate
where did you purchase yours?
Calico Griffin A caique would not like it but it would be ok once a year

Kjones thanks for your answer! 😊
I will have my cockatiels and the Caique in separate cages and never let them out of the cage at the same time.
What kind of caique should I get? I know that temperament varies between species
Can you leave a Caique alone when you go to work? They're beautiful birds!
Gareth Forde yes, however it is not recommended. They need lots of attention!
