I’ve listened to this episode twice already and I think it may be my favorite. Every episode has so much great information, but I do love the in-depth history of this line.

This line will always be special to me for offering my first Flash figure. Second hand figures were still a bit difficult to track down and It would be a few years later before I ran into a Super Powers Flash so for many years the TJ Flash was my only Flash. Also shout-out to Toy Fare for offering the Mail-Away Reverse Flash which was a repaint of the TJ figure but a much welcomed baddie for the collection.

I think the commercials and photos really enhanced this show.

I remember toyfare, or at least someone in their newsletter section, asking for folks to write in to ask Kenner/Hasbro to continue the line. It was the first time I wrote to a toy company!

I once talked with Kirk Bozigian (former Joe Brand Manager) about McFarlane. He said he toured McFarlane’s HQ as Hasbro was interested in buying him out. He said that Hasbro couldn’t possibly produce figures for the low cost he was and that he was making essentially no money from them.

Hey AA, great throwback discussion and thanks for the props to the old Sculpting crew! One add , pushing the aesthetics forward regarding figurative sculpting, the retirement of the old tooling limitations and the acceptance to allow undercuts in PVC. It was a sea change in pivoting the narrative and making new form factors possible in tooling! That Parallax figure is still one of my favorite sculpting moments, that cape still holds holds up to this day. Thank you sir, was great to remember those days!

Man I just caught this episode. But I have thought about this for awhile; how cool would it have been for Hasbro to introduce a tertiary wave of golden and silver age characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Alan Scott as Green Lantern, Wildcat, Black Canary, Hourma,n Barry Allen, Hal Jordan etc under the Total Justice branding, but instead of equipping these characters with futuristic Fractal Armor, they were supplied with a style of armor that looked a little more DIY and very retro inspired. Very World’s Fair circa 1941… that way the line could support the old along with the new?
I really wish this could have happened but after the Total Justice and legacy brands ended, it wouldn’t be long before the initiative to increase the size of the figures from 5” to 6” would become the norm, and then inevitably the DC license and all of their IPs would be handed off to Mattel. But nothing matched the charm of those old Kenner Total Justice molds

AA - Thank you so much for this. As I recall, from taking with Hasbro, Wonder Woman in wave 4 is the only completely original sculpt in the JLA line. The reason given for character selection of the JLA line including Martian Manhunter, Steel, Zauriel and Plastic Man were included was because of the popularity of the then current JLA comic by Grant Morrison and Howard Porter. Red Tornado goes with Robin, Superboy and Impulse as the main cast of the comic Young Justice. Rumor has it Hourman from DC 1 Million was considered for JLA wave 5.

Would Brainac have been thought of as a big DC villain at the time for him to maybe be in the line?

The Huntress figure looks pretty cool. It's kind of funny how her battle armor is just a bustier. 😆 But I guess if the armor is supposed to "enhance" their superpowers, that might help boost hers 😉😂

Was the first John Henry Irons figure not part of the Man of Steel figure line in 1994/1995?

Awesome! Talking about the Total Justice line! Thanks for doing this one.
(Added) Something missed with the Total Justice Wave 1 launch was the audio story CD (Total Justice: The Ultimate Weapon) that featured a full voice cast with 80's style music. The DCU characters were Batman (wave 1), Robin (Tim Drake), Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Oracle (Barbara Gordon), Supergirl, Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner), Flash (Wally West), Darkseid.
For the DC Super Heroes Blue Beetle (Ted Kord), Flash, and Atom 3-pack, that Atom is a de-aged Ray Palmer who appeared in a the Dan Jurgens-George Perez relaunch of the Teen Titans comic. Great art, where Dan Jurgens drew it...and yes...George Perez inked it!
For the continuation of the Total Justice line as the JLA line, there were Diamond Distributor box set exclusives of the JLA done as their evil energy doppelgangers from the Grant Morrison-Howard Porter JLA comic book series.

Love all this insight! Although the first Tim Drake was in the Batman Returns line

That's an odd one. Was designed to be Dick Grayson but used the style guides of Tom Lyle (which used Tim Drake) who was working on the Robin comics at the time. So it ended up looking like Tim Drake but due to the odd "high top" design fueled all kinds of rumors about it being a Marlon Wayans toy.
