Im from michigan and i dont call them that. Its michigander ignorance like labeling freshwater drum a junk fish. I hear many michigan fisherman trashing any fish that isnt perch or walleye specifically, in michigan. Lots of crap talk about catfish too. Lived in Texas and Missouri for 14 years combined and both places call them drum or gaspergou. Now Texans do call pin fish perch so they have the same problem with a different species. @reeldinoutdoors1999
@@andrejackson8270 I personally haven’t tried them but my buddy Mike cooked some up last year and said they tasted similar to like walleye I guess but I guess you’ll have to cook it right to find out lol I’m yet to try it this year I will definitely do a catch and cook video for these guys this summer!!
I haven't been fishing since...2016(?) but I remember in either2013 or 2014 I hooked one of these on the Detroit River(put in at Wyandotte) and I was loafing around towards the back of the boat just idly dipping the pole in and all of a sudden the poke dips in an arc and a litany of curses, shouts to get the net,and my father helping me to reel it in only to find out it was a sheepshead and tossed it back after freeing it. At the boat launch, there's a chart indicating which fish are better for you based on pollution in the river, with benthic carp and catfish, naturally,at the bottom and sheepshead are just one spot above them so we generally avoid them. Out of cleaner waters,I'd be willing to try the
They fight like hell and they are good size. In Salt Water Red and black drum are loved. Never understood why everyone hates them so much. Most under rated fish in the great lakes.
@@reeldinoutdoors1999 I’ve caught some nice steelhead and catfish off that pier. Always a bummer when I see dead drum laying around because they’re “trash fish”
@@roadendsfishing6416 it really is a bummer seeing all the dead drum!! And there is unreal fish that you can catch off that pier for sure!!! I’ve seen some tank drums and beyond huge carp out there!!!
Go to bait for these is the 5 of diamonds daredevil spoon spent quite a few summers catching sheepshead on the pier just for something to do and that was the go to lure for us
They are fun to catch, good fighters and size. I catch them all the time, problem is when you are hoping for other species and this fish keeps coming up, I catch them every time I go to the pier, spoon, live bait, etc. seems they are the only fish that lives there
Congrats man that’s awesome if you’d like for me to share it on my page feel free to dm me the pic of the fish and I’d be more than happy to share it amongst my page!!
I made it look easy on video haha it definitely ain’t that easy it took quite a bit of different lures to try to figure out what exactly they wanted that day!! They sure are fun to catch!!

Most people consider them a trash fish, but they are actually good eating. White flaky meat. The ancient native Americans prized the fishes drum bones for jewelry.
I have tried to eat them a few times, but haven't got it right. For the jewelry they have little "stones" in their head I think related to hearing. I have a small collection
@@loganselleck5112 we use a variety of stuff but best to use is colored spoon preferably like a bright green or bright pink and 1oz gumball jigs tipped with white paddle tails and toward night time and most of the day we like to use thundersticks but this time of year they will hit dang near anything that sits in front of their faces

They are a blast to ketch! The bull dog fight. I use a Gobie on a slip sinker Rig.
My old walleye fishing buddy and I have caught 20 plus pounders of these creatures while trolling for bugeyes they'll tear you up. Great fighters
