Down with ideology? Talk with Slavoj Žižek | Sternstunde Philosophie | SRF Kultur

  • He is considered philosophy's enfant terrible, provokes those on the right and on the left and analyses events from the perspective of Marx and Hegel. Above all, Slavoj Žižek is hip, and has been for decades. The eloquent all-rounder defends his ideology criticism on The Finest Hour - Philosophy.

    For Slavoj Žižek everything is ideology: whether capitalism or tolerance, Islam or simply day-to-day life. Buying a mobile, choosing clothes, toothpaste - it is all cloaked in ideological terms. Therefore for him, Marxist social criticism is not a thing of the past, it is more current than ever.
    Where before people used to be blinded by religion, today they are subjugated by technocracy and capitalism, Žižek finds. Nevertheless, the Slovenian philosopher holds on to the idea of truth and advocates human rights and Eurocentrism. He explains how all this fits together in his conversation with Barbara Bleisch.

    As someone who gets forced to pay for SRF (365.- annually) and actually hates to do it, I am very happy to see a production like this. She (the interviewer) is actually awesome and did her job very good. If there are more productions like this and if they put them on the internet to make the world a little bit smarter, I am acutally happy to pay my part of it.

    In my perception I've never come across a more intellectually capable interviewer than her. From my point of view she formulated exactly those questions that I immediatly asked myself. And on a personal note, I loved how she did neither give up on getting a precise answer nor penetrated him by merely repeating the same question. Really, well done. A truly insightful post!

    I just recently started diving into Zizek about a month ago. He can be hard to decipher at times as he's so sporadic in delivery and slips into many many tangents. Sometimes his main point can be hard to pin down but regardless, his stream of philosophical consciousness is something quite amazing to behold. I appreciate his particular style of criticism due to the fact that he knows how to ruffle up feathers but just in the right way to make you think instead of reacting in ideological defense. I'm treading these waters lightly but this seemingly shallow stream is proving to be far deeper than I honestly would have wanted. You have my attention but I'm not quite sure what to make of you yet Zizek... Time will tell. I think a debate with Jordan Peterson is exactly what the internet needs right now.

    • @NewGameMultimedia
      @NewGameMultimedia 5 років тому +24

      Jordan Peterson is not on the same level as Žižek... and I think you're looking this "debate" as a binary battle of intellectual wits you're missing the point. Žižek has described Peterson in the past as a "trendy" philosopher only speaking half wittingly on any forefront topics. Peterson has actually said he "skims" through things only scratching the surface then making decisions based on a minute amount of information.

    • @CitizenSnips314
      @CitizenSnips314 5 років тому +24

      Whilst Peterson has some valid points, they aren't original and can be found elsewhere. He seems to me a villain and a charlatan; intellectually dishonest and a willing puppet to political ideologues. Only those who refuse to look will fail to see it.

    This is a really great interview. It's smart, it's witty and....it's very clear. And all my respect to Mrs. Bleisch for being able to channel this constantly erupting fountain of words into a deeply meaningful talk. Very well done. It's quiet clear by her questions and pointers that Mrs. Bleisch did her homework on this guy, which made this video so much fun to watch. I've seen enough bad interviews to recognize an excellent one when I see it. Thank you for posting this.

    Like a swiss clock, she, the interviewer, was so well engineered and finessed to speak to him, prodding him, asking him and even teasing him with the right precision without hurting him to go offkey - a wonderful interview - Bravo. And the best part is it brought out the best of S Zizek. Thanks so much for uploading this.

      He could be referring to the allegory of the cave by Plato, which might be the oldest example in European culture that refers to this notion he describes of how ideology surrounds all things and once you notice this there is no real way of going back to that place of innocence. It's quite amazing this was my first lesson in art school and I always thought it didn't matter but here I am, watching Zizek with sunglasses and suddenly my head goes *ding*

    My summary of the first half is that he’s trying to bring awareness to ideology’s function, which is to suppress and falsify reality through external symbols such as language and visual advertisement.

    Genius of 21st century. Loved the 'love' allegory; his view on parenting, Hollywood, Wikileaks, politics. He speaks it as it is. And when he said 'happiness is for the idiots', I killed myself laughing. So very true. All is perfect as it is. His negation on his shirt is very true and the way he describes it. It is 'non duality' or meaning that there is no separation. Keep doing a great job.

    What a fantastic interviewer. It’s so rare to see someone able to truly challenge their subject in an interview without interrupting too much or being combative. She was assertive and held her ground, but the entire time I felt it was because she had a true curiosity and couldn’t stop until she got to the bottom of what she was asking about. Also, I can’t help but agree with Zizek - a beautiful woman indeed! Zizek was brilliant per usual.
