Great demo. I've got the nextone and use it regularly especially for small venue gigs and rehearsals, but it sounds flat in a direct comparison with a decent tube amp. In this demo your tube amps sound 3D. Way more going on. Great playing, and I love the Eastman, got myself a T486 a few months back, really pleased with it.

I still place tube amps at the top of the pile, and I am lucky to have these two reliable and sturdy ones that knock on wood, don’t give me many problems at all. With the technology getting better though, I’m always happy to plug into amplifiers like this, and never see it as anything that would hold me back from playing the way I want to play, or sounding the way I want to sound. I’ve actually been a big fan of certain transistor amps for a long time, and I am thinking about replacing one of my old fenders with a katana for rehearsal and small gigs. So happy to hear that you have an Eastman. I’ve heard great things about that model. I’ve had mine for 10 years now, and it’s been one of my favourites. For me it’s a lifetime instrument for sure. Going to get me a second hand Nextone next weekend after my old amplifier died. The problem with tube amps is that replacing tubes has become expensive (at least 250 €) so a Nextone is a good and cheaper alternative. Also I love my pedalboard in combination with a solid state amp. Thank you for nice playing!

I was really looking forward to this episode dealing with the Nextone, since your first video on it was what got me hooked on your channel. This episode did not disappoint. In both cases, the Nextone tube emulation settings sounded brighter than their tube amp counterparts, which sounded darker. Describing "tone" in such terms is always frustrating to me, but I don't know how else to put it. I don't mean the respective tube amps were darker as in "muffled" or something. There was just a difference in clarity or brightness that I perceived. Both sounded good, which is a definite compliment to the BOSS amp. This doesn't necessarily mean that in my tone quest/amp search, the Nextone will be my next one. (BOSS must have made that play on words intentionally.) I still have to test drive one for myself. But this video was a great help. Thanks, Lucas.

I agree it was fun to get the amplifiers to sound as close as they could but there does seem to be a little inherent brightness in the transistor circuit. I’m sure a different speaker could tame that though if one desired that. The important thing is that in isolation they all sound great and certainly could all pass in any kind of Recording situation in my opinion. Great job as usual. I found the Boss sounded smoother in the first 2 clips, though not as present, but in the last comparison I loved the real tubes. You will be in charge of telling Linda I NEED a new amp😁
I was quite impressed with the way it held up. I agree with the last clip it was really hard to get the two amplifiers to sound anything alike for whatever reason. Fun experiment and thank you again for letting me borrow your amplifier my friend! Linda can rat me out when new amp day comes :-)
Hi Lucas, thank you for the comparison, going through the same questions, I have my valve amps and I have my Roland Bluescube Artist Boss Nextone Stage and Boss Katana 100mk2. I run all 3 amps in a trio mono signal via a switching block so I can play my efx pedals to each or all 3 amps at the same time. Personally SS hasn't got there just yet but when played in a live band mix you can't really tell unless your a tone hog specialist. I found SS can achieve my valve amps sweet spot at many different sound levels, you can't do that with a valve amp. Playing at home like my people do even at 1 watt on a valve amp is loud, I play with a live drummer in my studio using that amp. Just one thing I noticed is the Roland amps eventually release the better design to the Boss amps something to keep in mind. Thank you so much really enjoyed your playing.
Hey! Thank you so much for your kind words on the playing and the video! It has definitely gotten so much better in these past few years and there are a number of fantastic options out there. I’m thinking about going the amp Sim route for some solo gigs in the form of a pedal on my board so I can go direct from time to time. I’m going to keep my eyes open for those newer Roland blues cubes though. I haven’t heard the most recent version. I used to have a cube from the 2010s and it was OK, but I know they’ve come along way since then.

That is very, very kind of you. I really appreciate it. To be honest it’s just a lot of times spent dialling in Sounds. If you spend lots of time exploring the full range of every knob and pickup position on your guitars, every knob on your amp, all the switches and knobs on your pedals, etc.. You’ll get a lot of education from it. For instance, I have spent endless hours dialling in Sounds on my own gear that gets me somewhere close to the sounds on my favourite recordings. it’s been an amazing education. Just some food for thought. If we remain open minded and continue to experiment with Sounds there is a lifetime of learning to be had
I just bought a Stage model home. I have tube amps and I understand the sound that tube enthusiasts crave, but damn this has tons of tone, cheaply, in a lightweight package. I'm impressed especially for the price and the tones are close to their tube counterparts, but my hearing is shot! Just ordered a Eastman T-184MX GB todayThanks for the video!
The first two comparisons were tricky, I didn't mind the somewhat scooped deep sound of the boss, but the third comparison clearly made the richness of a tube amp felt in terms of texture and presence.
I agree Guy. The third comparison wasn’t very close no matter what I did, funny how the 335 Style Eastman reacted to the two amplifiers so differently. first two we’re good in both cases though. Boss is doing good job. It’s getting better with this kind of technology
Quite frankly, I found the 6V6 quite similar (I am hearing that on monitors). And found a biggest difference with the EL84 but ... I did prefer the sound of the Nextone ... I guess this is a matter of personal taste but the Nextone does a great job for the price ... thanks for the video and great playing !!!

That’s so funny, people have told me that I remind them a little bit of Jeff before, which I take as a true compliment. I fell in love with his music when I was about 16 years old, and though the music I play these days is a lot more blues influenced, I still draw a lot of inspiration from his cord voicings and unconventional harmonic approach in my writing. Glad you like the bound Strat. That’s been my number one since 2017. It was made by the late great Girard Melancon from Louisiana. It’s one of those guitars that disappears when you play it. It’s perfectly balanced in terms of how it feels to play, and the sound of each pickup position too. If I had a $2000 6v6 amp and a $2000 EL34 amp and a $2000 6L6 amp and a $2000 EL84 amp, I too would choose your preferred option of picking up the one I wanted to use. Unfortunately, as I had to save for months to afford my Nextone, that lovely option will never be open to me: nor will it to millions like me. Lovely playing, by the way.
Absolutely. I completely agree with you, and I’ve got to say I love the sound of the Nextone. To me this was just a fun experiment, and you are absolutely right, I am lucky to have been able to do it. As great as the tube amps sound they do have issues from time to time, so the lack of hassle with the boss is a very appealing feature as well. Speaking of Boss, I was finally able to borrow a friends katana to do a review on, and that should be coming out very soon on the channel if you’re interested. Have you tried using the Nextone software to modify the amps settings? MANY adjustments can be made to the Custom channel. You can customize settings for a particular guitar. The annoying brightness of the lead channel can be nicely scaled back. You can create a library of custom patches, any one of which can be loaded into the Custom channel. You can adjust all four tube power amps to create a more detectable difference between them, then switch with the amp's rotary dial. Endless possibilities, but endless hours of adjusting. I have the Stage, but may get the Special. The Stage doesn't have enough power for full band gigs. I enjoyed your video, and will look thru your channel.
I have not tried that, as I only borrowed the amp for the weekend. It’s nice to know those options are out there and hopefully one day I will have more time to investigate all that is The Boss Nextone. Hope you enjoy the channel and thanks for sharing!
Tasty playing, brother! I’ve been a tube enthusiast for many years, but one of the bands I play with moved to silent stage, which tube amps aren’t necessarily the best at (found some workarounds, but I’m not thrilled with owning a $2K tube preamp…). I’ve tried some modeling amps, but I just haven’t bonded with them at all. Then I tried a Nextone…for about 3 and 1/2 straight hours at a friendly local shop. Fell in love with it and hope to pick it up this weekend. Just want to also express how much I enjoyed running across your channel! New subscriber here!

You’re an amazing guitar player:) I’m thinking about trading my heavy tube amp in on one of these Nextone amps. My favorite part of this video is when you went for the switch on the upper horn of that Eastman guitar and it wasn’t there and without missing a beat you went right down to the bridge and hi the switch. I know that would have messed me up . But not you! You’re Awesome keep up the great work:)👍🏻
They are great amplifiers. Give them a try and see what you think. Lots of options out there these days for non-tube amplifiers from these boss Nextones, down to the katana, up to quilters, Blue amps, and the list goes on. Good eye on the switch mishap haha. As far as I remember I shot a whole bunch a Videos this one day, and I just finished recording a different clip with a LP style lol. Hope you stick around the channel to check out some more videos. I had a Mesa Boogie F50 20 years ago. It sounded great but the tubes and amplifier needed quite some maintenance. That is not the end of the world of course, but my Boss Nextone special sounds just as good (in my opinion), is solid state and is pumping out 80 Watts, at a power consumption of 88 Watts, at half the price. I find that Amazing.
the nextone is really a steal for its versatility, esp if you get one used. i picked up a used one for the same price as a used AC10 and it’s much better for my needs. might even sound better 😉
The Nextone sounds amazing and does have a LOT of versatility. It’s $534 in the US. Not sure I would pay $1,000 for it (I don’t know exchange rate for Canadian). Great video! FYI- I’m a beginner player without a great tube amp or anything like the Nextone. Trying to decide what my first real amp should be…kind of leaning towards the Nextone.
For $535 I’d say it’s quite an amazing amplifier, and definitely worth getting. For my experience tube amplifiers at the lower end of the price threshold tend to be a lot more problematic then when you really invest in one, so I would say this is the amp for you. I was really impressed, and since I made this review I have been toying with the thought of getting one of these or a katana for rehearsals and certain gigs. Honestly the Technology is leaps and bounds ahead of where it was 10 years ago for instance. It’s at the point now where the nexttone has the tone and feel under the fingers that makes me want to play and be creative. This was not always the case with transistor amplifiers. Really nice comparison. I own a Blues Cube artist, and it's a great amp. To me it sounds and feels like a real tube amp, so much so that I have gotten rid of almost all of my tube amps since I got it. The BCA is a bit different though, it doesn't have to emulate 3 different power sections so I suspect more of it's processing power can be dedicated to things like dynamics and feel. Having said all that, I don't think the Nextone was too far from the tubes in the video. The Kingsley and the Vintage Sound are both more expensive. You could argue that you're getting each Nextone model in the amp for 1/3 or so of the cost of it's tube counterpart. Do the tube amps sound or feel 3 times better than the Nextone's emulations? That's probably too subjective a question to truly answer but the fact that it's even a debate shows how far non tube amp technology has come in recent years. Would be interested to see you check out the new Nextone special in a similar way to see if Boss has gotten closer in your opinion. Subscribing to the channel btw!

Would be curious to try one and I will also keep my eyes open for that new Nextone special. Wasn’t aware of it yet. You’re absolutely right when you say the other two amplifiers cost more, so when you think of everything that comes with the Boss it’s very impressive. I will admit fully that I am a creature of comfort and I like the amplifiers I’ve had around for a long time/kept them around for many reasons. I have also kept those two amplifiers around for a long time as they are extremely reliable and have never let me down after years of use. I know it’s not common to have zero upkeep on amplifiers with tubes, but I’ve been lucky I certainly would have no problem gigging or recording with the Nextone, as it sounds fantastic, and I generally find I can get my sound with most amplifiers. @@LucasHaneman 100% agree with you, I think most guitarists are creatures of comfort. Myself included. Ultimately, it all comes down to what inspires you as a player and what makes your ears happy. I took the leap on the BCA because it fit my needs as far as far as tone, weight, built in attenuation, and durability. I definitely wasn't expecting to end up liking it as much as I did though. If you get a chance definitely check one out. I still dig tube amps, there is definitely a certain magic vibe to them. Especially when you find a really good one. Personally, I think we are living in the golden age of guitar playing, at least as far as all the options available to musicians go, and it's great to see talented and serious players like you exploring some of those options objectively. Exactly as you say, you got a find the thing that works for you and stick with it as I think this is a big part of finding our own sound as guitar players. Speaking of being creatures of comfort, I also really love these old Yamaha transistor amplifiers from the late 70s early 80s called the JX series. I did a video on them Way way back in the early days of this series. I have one that I love to record with as it just sounds amazing, and I’ve brought it to many many small gigs and rehearsals etc. Unfortunately it’s probably on it’s last legs as it’s lived a hard life and I found it on the side of the road about eight years ago when someone was throwing it out. Whenever the day comes that that amplifier dies I will probably replace it with something like the blues cube artist, or one of these Boss amps. I appreciate your kind words. I love to make these videos to help people with their tone journeys, and to help me with mine :-)
@@LucasHaneman Just watched the JX video. Those things sound really good! For a second I thought maybe those were the SS amps BB King played through for a while but I think those were Lab Series. Will have to keep an eye out for those Yamahas now... ;)
@@Teletex82 You are right on the money about those BB King amplifiers. They were not the Yamaha‘s, but I like those JX amplifiers a fair bit. Still reasonably priced on the used market, but they have gone up a little bit since I shot that video a couple of years ago
The real tube amps just have more of that...... MAGIC. The boss amp is good but the real tubes just win for my ears. Great playing. The tube amp are much more dynamic.
I agree with you. The emulations are getting a lot better that’s for sure, so good that I would be happy to use one on a gig. They aren’t quite there though yet in the dynamic response or warmth factors. I won’t be selling my Vintage Sound or Kingsley anytime soon haha.
I have a Kemper and its amazingly close sound wise but my problem is the feel. Nothing like standing in front of a tube amp thats cooking. The speaker is actually moving air and the guitar reacts to the amp. Natural feedback and such. That is great when you can get the amp interacting with what you are playing. Tube amps just do it for me.

Have a boss nextone artist. Upgraded the speaker and is on par with all the tube amps I own. These boutique amps have higher end speakers that to my novice ears makes the difference. But..... Big but.... I bought mine for $600 on sale. At $1k my answer may be different. 🎸
Interesting to hear from another user of the amplifier. What my ears detect is a little bit of an inherent brightness in the boss no matter what I did to EQ it out. Did you find the speaker change tackle this issue? of course these things I noticed were during my comparison. @@LucasHaneman To my novice ears the speaker swap was exactly what the amp needed. Put a swamp thang by Eminence 150w. I noticed with lesser quality speakers like a Celestian seventy 80 they tend to be brighter and shrill. Very good bell like cleans and much more warmth with better controlled breakup. I just watched your video on SS Frets and was very informative. Loving the channel so far. Maybe a speaker swap video in the future? Just know one of the terminals (I believe negative) to the speaker will have to be changed for a wider port. IDK why boss does that but one port is smaller than the other.
That is a great idea! I might try that with one of my own transistor amps. I think if I did it to a borrowed one they might not lend me anything again. Lol
Thanks for the video and great playing. I'm torn between getting a Katana Artist or the Nextone Special. I'm mostly interested in dialing a few good classic tones (clean, clean w dirt, heavier OD). Don't need many effects. Mostly interested in great tone. I've spent time on the Artist, which is great, and lower end Katanas which are OK. Can't demo a Nextone. What would you recommend between a Katana and Nextone, cost aside. Thanks.
Great questions here. I really find both amplifiers sound great. Don’t know if you’ve seen my other videos on The boss amplifiers, but I have found all of them to be impressive from a tonal perspective. I wouldn’t say I hear a massive difference in the quality of sound between the katana and the Nextone, but if simplicity is what you are after then I would absolutely go for the Nextone. I did a video specifically on the katana and my comment at the end of the day was “the amp sounds spectacular, but it’s easy to get lost in the effects unless you know specifically what you are after and avoid being distracted by them. “ More or less that was my point anyhow. In terms of longevity there also must be some other corners being cut with the katana if you look at the price difference between it and the Nextone. I know both are PCB and all that, but I would say that the Nextone has a more stable and sturdy feel too its components plus it’s much simpler to operate.. that being said I think you’re after some thing I can empathize with as I choose the gear I choose because it keeps things simple and keeps me focussed on making music, not being distracted by tons of options.. haha At least that’s what it does at the best of times :-) hope this helps and good luck on the amp quest!

The Boss Nextone is an amazing tranny amp which with the Boss download on computer you can tailor the sound to how you like it, and its hundreds of pounds cheaper in the uk than these other vintage tube amps, as well as being not that far away in sound, whats not to like, and its probably half the weight.
The short fall of the Nextone is the speaker, swap it with a Ted Weber or something of equal quality and I doubt anyone would tell the difference in a blind test.
Agreed. I definitely like the sound of the boss amplifier a lot in its own right. There is so much to the complexity of a tube circuit though in terms of the timber, that the emulation just isn’t there quite yet
Boutique all the way. Not a purist but Boss isn’t quite there yet, especially for the money. For about 1k I can get a Frenzel custom hand wired tube amp and a 1x12 cab with a Celestion G12H30. Or a Frenzel preamp with a Cabzeus and an FRFR. As far as power amp sections, they seem to matter less than the preamp section until you hit really high volumes. Emulation is getting closer though and I forsee a day when it will be right there with tubes, just not yet.
I agree with you completely. There is an inherent brightness in the transistor circuits that just hasn’t been quite tamed yet. Even when I got the amps sounding the same relatively in the room, they did not track that Way. I do like the boss for what it does and think it sounds very good, but it’s not replacing my tube amplifiers quite yet. A great back up? Yes it would be if I needed one
@@LucasHaneman Yeah I hear ya, I have a DSM Simplifier that is all analog circuitry that sounds better than modelers, but still not tube, however it makes a great headphone or DI rig. Plus it’s pedal sized and does the three classic amp sounds very adequately. I’d certainly gig with it. Horses for courses as they say.
@@mooseymoose Exactly. I have a lot of friends who don’t have a car for instants and need to take the bus to their gigs. In those kinds of situations I think the technology is there to have a great sound during a live gig or a recording session with out the hassle of lugging around that heavy tube amplifier. Also, the lack of maintenance with transistor amplifiers is very nice :-) Some of the pedal platform preamp’s are also fantastic. I’m a big fan of the Kingsley stuff, and Simon who builds it is getting into that world with some amazing sounding gear now!
the nextone definitely doesn't have the punch, definition, power and authority of a tube combo with a bit of power (headroom) under the hood. In person it's not the same vs compressed youtube video. cheers. Martin
I’ve got to agree with you. I like it for what it is, but the tube amps still have the upper hand. I also find if you get a good solid hand wired tube amp like one of these, you tend to have minimal issues gigging with them regularly

I’ve actually been a big fan of certain transistor amps for a long time, and I am thinking about replacing one of my old fenders with a katana for rehearsal and small gigs. Going to get me a second hand Nextone next weekend after my old amplifier died. The problem with tube amps is that replacing tubes has become expensive (at least 250 €) so a Nextone is a good and cheaper alternative. Also I love my pedalboard in combination with a solid state amp. Thank you for nice playing!

I was really looking forward to this episode dealing with the Nextone, since your first video on it was what got me hooked on your channel. This episode did not disappoint. In both cases, the Nextone tube emulation settings sounded brighter than their tube amp counterparts, which sounded darker. Describing "tone" in such terms is always frustrating to me, but I don't know how else to put it. I don't mean the respective tube amps were darker as in "muffled" or something. There was just a difference in clarity or brightness that I perceived. Both sounded good, which is a definite compliment to the BOSS amp. This doesn't necessarily mean that in my tone quest/amp search, the Nextone will be my next one. (BOSS must have made that play on words intentionally.) I still have to test drive one for myself. But this video was a great help. Thanks, Lucas.

I agree it was fun to get the amplifiers to sound as close as they could but there does seem to be a little inherent brightness in the transistor circuit. I’m sure a different speaker could tame that though if one desired that. The important thing is that in isolation they all sound great and certainly could all pass in any kind of Recording situation in my opinion. I was quite impressed with the way it held up. I agree with the last clip it was really hard to get the two amplifiers to sound anything alike for whatever reason. Fun experiment and thank you again for letting me borrow your amplifier my friend! Linda can rat me out when new amp day comes :-)

Hi Lucas, thank you for the comparison, going through the same questions, I have my valve amps and I have my Roland Bluescube Artist Boss Nextone Stage and Boss Katana 100mk2. I run all 3 amps in a trio mono signal via a switching block so I can play my efx pedals to each or all 3 amps at the same time.
Personally SS hasn't got there just yet but when played in a live band mix you can't really tell unless your a tone hog specialist. I found SS can achieve my valve amps sweet spot at many different sound levels, you can't do that with a valve amp. Playing at home like my people do even at 1 watt on a valve amp is loud, I play with a live drummer in my studio using that amp. Just one thing I noticed is the Roland amps eventually release the better design to the Boss amps something to keep in mind. Thank you so much really enjoyed your playing.

I’m thinking about going the amp Sim route for some solo gigs in the form of a pedal on my board so I can go direct from time to time. I’m going to keep my eyes open for those newer Roland blues cubes though. I haven’t heard the most recent version. I used to have a cube from the 2010s and it was OK, but I know they’ve come along way since then.

That is very, very kind of you. I really appreciate it. To be honest it’s just a lot of times spent dialling in Sounds. If you spend lots of time exploring the full range of every knob and pickup position on your guitars, every knob on your amp, all the switches and knobs on your pedals, etc.. You’ll get a lot of education from it. For instance, I have spent endless hours dialling in Sounds on my own gear that gets me somewhere close to the sounds on my favourite recordings. it’s been an amazing education. Just some food for thought. If we remain open minded and continue to experiment with Sounds there is a lifetime of learning to be had
I just bought a Stage model home. I have tube amps and I understand the sound that tube enthusiasts crave, but damn this has tons of tone, cheaply, in a lightweight package. The first two comparisons were tricky, I didn't mind the somewhat scooped deep sound of the boss, but the third comparison clearly made the richness of a tube amp felt in terms of texture and presence.
I agree Guy. The third comparison wasn’t very close no matter what I did, funny how the 335 Style Eastman reacted to the two amplifiers so differently. first two we’re good in both cases though. Boss is doing good job. It’s getting better with this kind of technology
Quite frankly, I found the 6V6 quite similar (I am hearing that on monitors). And found a biggest difference with the EL84 but ... I did prefer the sound of the Nextone ... I guess this is a matter of personal taste but the Nextone does a great job for the price ... thanks for the video and great playing !!!

That’s so funny, people have told me that I remind them a little bit of Jeff before, which I take as a true compliment. I fell in love with his music when I was about 16 years old, and though the music I play these days is a lot more blues influenced, I still draw a lot of inspiration from his cord voicings and unconventional harmonic approach in my writing. Glad you like the bound Strat. That’s been my number one since 2017. It was made by the late great Girard Melancon from Louisiana. It’s one of those guitars that disappears when you play it. It’s perfectly balanced in terms of how it feels to play, and the sound of each pickup position too. If I had a $2000 6v6 amp and a $2000 EL34 amp and a $2000 6L6 amp and a $2000 EL84 amp, I too would choose your preferred option of picking up the one I wanted to use. Unfortunately, as I had to save for months to afford my Nextone, that lovely option will never be open to me: nor will it to millions like me.

To me this was just a fun experiment, and you are absolutely right, I am lucky to have been able to do it. As great as the tube amps sound they do have issues from time to time, so the lack of hassle with the boss is a very appealing feature as well. Have you tried using the Nextone software to modify the amps settings? MANY adjustments can be made to the Custom channel. You can customize settings for a particular guitar. The annoying brightness of the lead channel can be nicely scaled back. You can create a library of custom patches, any one of which can be loaded into the Custom channel. You can adjust all four tube power amps to create a more detectable difference between them, then switch with the amp's rotary dial. Endless possibilities, but endless hours of adjusting.
I have the Stage, but may get the Special. The Stage doesn't have enough power for full band gigs.
I enjoyed your video, and will look thru your channel.
I have not tried that, as I only borrowed the amp for the weekend. It’s nice to know those options are out there and hopefully one day I will have more time to investigate all that is The Boss Nextone. Hope you enjoy the channel and thanks for sharing!

I’ve been a tube enthusiast for many years, but one of the bands I play with moved to silent stage, which tube amps aren’t necessarily the best at (found some workarounds, but I’m not thrilled with owning a $2K tube preamp…). I’ve tried some modeling amps, but I just haven’t bonded with them at all. Then I tried a Nextone…for about 3 and 1/2 straight hours at a friendly local shop. Fell in love with it and hope to pick it up this weekend.

My favorite part of this video is when you went for the switch on the upper horn of that Eastman guitar and it wasn’t there and without missing a beat you went right down to the bridge and hi the switch. They are great amplifiers. Give them a try and see what you think. Lots of options out there these days for non-tube amplifiers from these boss Nextones, down to the katana, up to quilters, Blue amps, and the list goes on. Good eye on the switch mishap haha. As far as I remember I shot a whole bunch a Videos this one day, and I just finished recording a different clip with a LP style lol. Hope you stick around the channel to check out some more videos. I had a Mesa Boogie F50 20 years ago. It sounded great but the tubes and amplifier needed quite some maintenance. That is not the end of the world of course, but my Boss Nextone special sounds just as good (in my opinion), is solid state and is pumping out 80 Watts, at a power consumption of 88 Watts, at half the price. I find that Amazing.
the nextone is really a steal for its versatility, esp if you get one used. i picked up a used one for the same price as a used AC10 and it’s much better for my needs. might even sound better 😉

The Nextone sounds amazing and does have a LOT of versatility. It’s $534 in the US. Not sure I would pay $1,000 for it (I don’t know exchange rate for Canadian). Great video! FYI- I’m a beginner player without a great tube amp or anything like the Nextone. Trying to decide what my first real amp should be…kind of leaning towards the Nextone.
For $535 I’d say it’s quite an amazing amplifier, and definitely worth getting. For my experience tube amplifiers at the lower end of the price threshold tend to be a lot more problematic then when you really invest in one, so I would say this is the amp for you. I was really impressed, and since I made this review I have been toying with the thought of getting one of these or a katana for rehearsals and certain gigs. Honestly the Technology is leaps and bounds ahead of where it was 10 years ago for instance. It’s at the point now where the nexttone has the tone and feel under the fingers that makes me want to play and be creative. This was not always the case with transistor amplifiers. Really nice comparison. I own a Blues Cube artist, and it's a great amp. To me it sounds and feels like a real tube amp, so much so that I have gotten rid of almost all of my tube amps since I got it. The BCA is a bit different though, it doesn't have to emulate 3 different power sections so I suspect more of it's processing power can be dedicated to things like dynamics and feel.
Having said all that, I don't think the Nextone was too far from the tubes in the video. The Kingsley and the Vintage Sound are both more expensive. You could argue that you're getting each Nextone model in the amp for 1/3 or so of the cost of it's tube counterpart. Do the tube amps sound or feel 3 times better than the Nextone's emulations? That's probably too subjective a question to truly answer but the fact that it's even a debate shows how far non tube amp technology has come in recent years.
Would be interested to see you check out the new Nextone special in a similar way to see if Boss has gotten closer in your opinion.

Would be curious to try one and I will also keep my eyes open for that new Nextone special. Wasn’t aware of it yet. You’re absolutely right when you say the other two amplifiers cost more, so when you think of everything that comes with the Boss it’s very impressive. I will admit fully that I am a creature of comfort and I like the amplifiers I’ve had around for a long time/kept them around for many reasons. I have also kept those two amplifiers around for a long time as they are extremely reliable and have never let me down after years of use. I know it’s not common to have zero upkeep on amplifiers with tubes, but I’ve been lucky I certainly would have no problem gigging or recording with the Nextone, as it sounds fantastic, and I generally find I can get my sound with most amplifiers. @@LucasHaneman 100% agree with you, I think most guitarists are creatures of comfort. Myself included. Ultimately, it all comes down to what inspires you as a player and what makes your ears happy. I took the leap on the BCA because it fit my needs as far as far as tone, weight, built in attenuation, and durability. I definitely wasn't expecting to end up liking it as much as I did though. If you get a chance definitely check one out.
I still dig tube amps, there is definitely a certain magic vibe to them. Especially when you find a really good one. Personally, I think we are living in the golden age of guitar playing, at least as far as all the options available to musicians go, and it's great to see talented and serious players like you exploring some of those options objectively.

Speaking of being creatures of comfort, I also really love these old Yamaha transistor amplifiers from the late 70s early 80s called the JX series. I did a video on them Way way back in the early days of this series. I have one that I love to record with as it just sounds amazing, and I’ve brought it to many many small gigs and rehearsals etc. Unfortunately it’s probably on it’s last legs as it’s lived a hard life and I found it on the side of the road about eight years ago when someone was throwing it out. Whenever the day comes that that amplifier dies I will probably replace it with something like the blues cube artist, or one of these Boss amps. I appreciate your kind words. I love to make these videos to help people with their tone journeys, and to help me with mine :-)
@@LucasHaneman Just watched the JX video. Those things sound really good! For a second I thought maybe those were the SS amps BB King played through for a while but I think those were Lab Series. Will have to keep an eye out for those Yamahas now... ;)
@@Teletex82 You are right on the money about those BB King amplifiers. They were not the Yamaha‘s, but I like those JX amplifiers a fair bit. Still reasonably priced on the used market, but they have gone up a little bit since I shot that video a couple of years ago
The real tube amps just have more of that...... MAGIC. The boss amp is good but the real tubes just win for my ears. Great playing. The tube amp are much more dynamic.
I agree with you. The emulations are getting a lot better that’s for sure, so good that I would be happy to use one on a gig. They aren’t quite there though yet in the dynamic response or warmth factors. I won’t be selling my Vintage Sound or Kingsley anytime soon haha.
I have a Kemper and its amazingly close sound wise but my problem is the feel. Nothing like standing in front of a tube amp thats cooking. The speaker is actually moving air and the guitar reacts to the amp. Natural feedback and such. That is great when you can get the amp interacting with what you are playing. Tube amps just do it for me.

Have a boss nextone artist. Upgraded the speaker and is on par with all the tube amps I own. These boutique amps have higher end speakers that to my novice ears makes the difference. But..... Big but.... I bought mine for $600 on sale. At $1k my answer may be different. 🎸
Interesting to hear from another user of the amplifier. What my ears detect is a little bit of an inherent brightness in the boss no matter what I did to EQ it out. Did you find the speaker change tackle this issue? of course these things I noticed were during my comparison. @@LucasHaneman To my novice ears the speaker swap was exactly what the amp needed. Put a swamp thang by Eminence 150w. I noticed with lesser quality speakers like a Celestian seventy 80 they tend to be brighter and shrill. Very good bell like cleans and much more warmth with better controlled breakup. I just watched your video on SS Frets and was very informative. Loving the channel so far. Maybe a speaker swap video in the future? Just know one of the terminals (I believe negative) to the speaker will have to be changed for a wider port. IDK why boss does that but one port is smaller than the other.

I love tube amps, however, am I crazy to really like the tone of the Boss? How is it for gigs (weight and sound wise)?
I personally have never gigged it, but I know I guy who gigs with two of them in stereo and it sounds great!
Thanks for the video and great playing. I'm torn between getting a Katana Artist or the Nextone Special. I'm mostly interested in dialing a few good classic tones (clean, clean w dirt, heavier OD). Don't need many effects. Mostly interested in great tone. I've spent time on the Artist, which is great, and lower end Katanas which are OK. Can't demo a Nextone. What would you recommend between a Katana and Nextone, cost aside. Thanks.
Great questions here. I really find both amplifiers sound great. Don’t know if you’ve seen my other videos on The boss amplifiers, but I have found all of them to be impressive from a tonal perspective. I wouldn’t say I hear a massive difference in the quality of sound between the katana and the Nextone, but if simplicity is what you are after then I would absolutely go for the Nextone. I did a video specifically on the katana and my comment at the end of the day was “the amp sounds spectacular, but it’s easy to get lost in the effects unless you know specifically what you are after and avoid being distracted by them. “ More or less that was my point anyhow. In terms of longevity there also must be some other corners being cut with the katana if you look at the price difference between it and the Nextone. I know both are PCB and all that, but I would say that the Nextone has a more stable and sturdy feel too its components plus it’s much simpler to operate.. that being said I think you’re after some thing I can empathize with as I choose the gear I choose because it keeps things simple and keeps me focussed on making music, not being distracted by tons of options.. haha At least that’s what it does at the best of times :-) hope this helps and good luck on the amp quest!

These modeling amps are giving tubes a run for their money...do ya think!
The Boss Nextone is an amazing tranny amp which with the Boss download on computer you can tailor the sound to how you like it, and its hundreds of pounds cheaper in the uk than these other vintage tube amps, as well as being not that far away in sound, whats not to like, and its probably half the weight.
The short fall of the Nextone is the speaker, swap it with a Ted Weber or something of equal quality and I doubt anyone would tell the difference in a blind test.

You just can't replicate the feel and response of a tube amplifier... The sonic quality cannot be matched in my opinion.
Agreed. I definitely like the sound of the boss amplifier a lot in its own right. There is so much to the complexity of a tube circuit though in terms of the timber, that the emulation just isn’t there quite yet
Boutique all the way. Not a purist but Boss isn’t quite there yet, especially for the money. For about 1k I can get a Frenzel custom hand wired tube amp and a 1x12 cab with a Celestion G12H30. Or a Frenzel preamp with a Cabzeus and an FRFR. As far as power amp sections, they seem to matter less than the preamp section until you hit really high volumes. Emulation is getting closer though and I forsee a day when it will be right there with tubes, just not yet.
I agree with you completely. There is an inherent brightness in the transistor circuits that just hasn’t been quite tamed yet. Even when I got the amps sounding the same relatively in the room, they did not track that Way. I do like the boss for what it does and think it sounds very good, but it’s not replacing my tube amplifiers quite yet. A great back up? Yes it would be if I needed one
@@LucasHaneman Yeah I hear ya, I have a DSM Simplifier that is all analog circuitry that sounds better than modelers, but still not tube, however it makes a great headphone or DI rig. Plus it’s pedal sized and does the three classic amp sounds very adequately. I’d certainly gig with it. Horses for courses as they say.
@@mooseymoose Exactly. I have a lot of friends who don’t have a car for instants and need to take the bus to their gigs. In those kinds of situations I think the technology is there to have a great sound during a live gig or a recording session with out the hassle of lugging around that heavy tube amplifier. Also, the lack of maintenance with transistor amplifiers is very nice :-) Some of the pedal platform preamp’s are also fantastic. I’m a big fan of the Kingsley stuff, and Simon who builds it is getting into that world with some amazing sounding gear now!
the nextone definitely doesn't have the punch, definition, power and authority of a tube combo with a bit of power (headroom) under the hood. In person it's not the same vs compressed youtube video. cheers. Martin
I’ve got to agree with you. I like it for what it is, but the tube amps still have the upper hand. I also find if you get a good solid hand wired tube amp like one of these, you tend to have minimal issues gigging with them regularly
@@LucasHaneman same here, I use the amp late at night and it's good to carry for small gig. I corrected my replie btw, vocal recognition is practical but not precise. Thanks for your answer. Martin
@@thesoundpurist I hear you. I use Siri often for replying to comments as I have a visual impairment so typing everything out just takes too long. Unfortunately as you say it’s not always accurate. I get you though, and thanks so much for checking out the channel!

Clean it is no match for the tube amps. The Nextone sounds 'flat' and two-dimensional.
Thanks for your comment. It sounds a lot better than many other transistor amps I have played, but still it’s not quite the same
