    HA! This one's gonna have to wait until after Christmas---I still haven't finished my gun rests and bean bags yet. The wood's all measured and marked though, and I DID buy a large bag of pinto beans yesterday. When I came into the kitchen, my wife said, "I already had some pinto beans. Why didn't you ask me before you bought this?!?!" I love that girl;;;;she was ready to cook me some beans and cornbread! Thanks, Roy for another one and I wish you, your REAL family, and all of your extended FMG family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

    Very nice video Roy ... and thanks for promoting PPE (personal protective equipment). With 30+ years in heavy aerospace manufacturing, I've seen some accidents I really wish I hadn't. Even a small, low-cost, seemingly innocuous machine can ruin your day if you don't respect it.
    I've seen multiple versions of this stand over the years - and the one mistake I've seen repeated is making the slots for the uprights too tight. Guys often make them snug (I guess it seems more precise), but the uprights really need some space (as you noted, we're not building the Eiffel Tower). If you live in an area where the humidity varies widely with the seasons (like the Ohio River valley where I live), making the slots too tight will come back to haunt you. We all know wood swells - and you don't want to get to the range on that steamy August day, just to find the uprights absolutely, positively won't go in the slots.

    • @fmgpubs
      @fmgpubs  Рік тому

      You’re right about being snug. I like my “finish’ woodwork to be as good as possible, but this sort of stuff does need some room. Mine tends to live outside too, so all the more. Thanks for your kind words! Roy

    I made one of these a few years ago but I placed one of them cheap cabinet pull handles on the backside of the bottom 2x4 to prevent your hand getting cut by shrapnel

  • @Bill-jv5eg

    Nice, I’ve been making these for years, tip, use wood siding shingles for shims to take the wiggle out of the uprights, easy in an out.

    • @fmgpubs
      @fmgpubs  Рік тому

      Good idea. I’ve found once you get a target backer on they stabilize each other and it still makes it easy to take it down. Roy

  • @leathersaddlehorse

    I have been making and using these for years, and prefer the to any that are made commercially, at least so far. One thing to realize is that unless you make the little slots VERY loose, they will fit fine when everything remains dry, but if either the stand or the uprights, or both, get wet, suddenly the little slots are VERY little, and the uprights swell also. It really doesn't take a lot of rain or sitting in the snow for things to suddenly be too tight to work. Let them dry out good, and they are good to go again! Personally, I like to buy 1x2's for the uprights and make the blocks for the spacers on the base out of the same material. Good rule for whatever you decide to use for uprights; make the spacer blocks out of the same material as the uprights.

    • @fmgpubs
      @fmgpubs  Рік тому

      You’re right, indeed. I had someone ask why I let them “wiggle” a bit. Just for that reason. Roy

      @@fmgpubs I have been tossing around about making a rifle cradle for cleaning rifles and shotguns. There are alot of great cradles to buy but pricy. A good solid one shouldn't cost that much to build. Front forearm part is pretty easy but rear clamping I have a couple ideas but have been distracted lately and haven't had time to try any ideas in the shop. And I'm retired but too busy for important stuff like a gun cradle, hard to believe!! Keep up the good work.

    • @fmgpubs
      @fmgpubs  Рік тому

      The beauty of it is you can put whatever you want o on the center. I have a 6” steel round plate on a holder you can just sit on the top of the 2x4. But you could staple stuff to it, put a small shelf on the top and sit cookies or stuff to shoot, etc. It just give you some options. Roy

    Good Deal Roy, Keep it up. Really enjoy your content. I have built somethin kinda similar to yours there. But, I used the old election "vote for me" signs that are never picked up from the elections that are everwhere for a backing instead of the cardboard. I'm findin it hard to find bigger pieces of cardboard round. Unless your buy a large appliance or furniture it just cant be found where I'm at. Election signs are all over the place and people love for someone to pick them up.
