    veryCool littleSystem i too am a Fisherman and i live. in Florida. so. i’ve gotten tired of buying Ice. my Solution has been making Block Ice in my Deep Freezer btw if you added handles on yourIce. Buckets ? etc it might be easier to lift them out of the Freezer a 5 Gallon Bucket handle looks like it would. be a good candidate to reporpose for a inexpensive choice

      It for sure isn't cheaper, but definitely has its advantages over trusting the grid or fossil fuel generators. I prefer a combination of all three.

    Hi Andrew, replace that wall unit with an inverter mini-split A/C unit, 20 Seer and you will see a huge power reduction. I installed a 9,000 BTU Daizuki, ($480 hot & cold) tested it in S. Florida in the summer and it used non-stop working, 24/7, for about $ 1.40 per day.

    An example of solar savings. A whole house solar system capable of powering my house 100% off grid would cost about $30,000. My average electrical bill is $130.00/month. It would take 19 years for me to see the "free energy" from that system. 30 KW panels, 24 kwh batteries and associated inverters etc with an average 650 kwh monthly house usage. (simplified, conservative, general estimate).

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  Рік тому +2

      Hardly no one can argue its cheaper. Most are going to solar because they no longer trust the failing grid, geopolitical tensions, changing weather patterns, or wanting to get away from fossil fuels. Blackouts and brown outs are driving many to look for alternative solutions. I have my reasons for wanting backup solar, it's never been about saving money. But if I have it, might as well let it pay me back little by little.

    Not really needed to ID that as a dedicated solar outlet, use a red electrical plug- in sockets for that dedicated solar outlet. Hospitals do that so all the sockets on their on-site emergency generator power can be easily Identified when grid power is lost.

    Get the 20lb bags and line the bins with the bags so it dispenses into the bags directly.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  Рік тому

      It's been mentioned, but 99 percent of its use is dumping straight into a cooler or the boat right outside my door. No point in wasting the bags when I can dump straight out of the bins.

    First off thank you for a great channel, found my way here through this series but stayed for much of the rest ;) Just wanted to ask if you've ever considered trying hot water to increase ice production? This is called the Mpemba effect, and is a cool but counter-intuitive thing to play with.

    • @TKCL

    What would you have to do to make the ice safe for drinks?

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  Рік тому

      Just clean the freezer often as you should any ice maker, and I would make sure all plumbing fittings are potable water safe. Also filter the water further would help, I do have a filter on the outside of this building for that room. Clean hands and scoop is a must with drinking ice too, don't want to put bacteria in there.

  • @RobertKohut
    @RobertKohut Рік тому

    Ha, ha, you got the "free energy" bug, but and there is always a but, it takes a while for the solar equipment to pay itself off and generate free energy...🙂I would love to do just a whole house power failure backup battery and solar panel set up but the cost, in comparison to a 10kw peak 8kw continuous gas generator manual generator, is too great. I got my DuroMax generator for about $1600.00 CAD and that is about the cost of just one battery in a system I mention. 🙂

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  Рік тому +1

      The whole point of solar is for any potential long term outage, plus it can offset some electricity usage while it's waiting for an outage. I have a big propane and gas generator, excellent for short outages. Not something I would at all trust for long term or extended outages. I'll always have a combination of backup power. Today's world is to unpredictable.

    Hey man, not sure if this will ever get to you but i built a replica of your ice box about a year ago but i found that if i don't use it every week the ice develops a bunch of frost on it and will basically turn into a solid block of ice and not be useable. I noticed that most freezers have someway of dehydrating the freezer and i'm wondering if you have a solution for this or have run into the issue at all.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  7 місяців тому

      You definitely don't want a defrosting freezer or you will wind up with a block of ice. I defrost my ice machine 2-3 times a year by unplugging and cleaning out. By using the trash cans shown in this video I have zero problems with any ice freezing into the frost. Hope this helps.
