Lol, that's how I got my F150 for $1000...took a day to replace the heater, then another to flush all the garbage out of the system before reconnecting the hoses. Most common cause of failed heater cores is galvanic corrosion caused by improper grounding along with failing to change the coolant out once every year or so...
Well documented video on what it takes to do this repair. If you're not an auto mechanic, the average cost to have a heater core replaced in a truck is between $900 and $1,400 which is reasonable considering the effort and know-how it takes to do the job right. You're not only paying for the time it takes to complete the repair, your paying for the years of experience and know-how the mechanic has logged, as well as the cost of diagnostic equipment and tools they've invested in to make sure they can do the job right. Kudos to technicians like boostismyfriend and their dedication to keeping us all safe (and warm) on the road.
Great video. You might want to tell people they can change out the heater core without draining the AC. Your video was excellent made the job very easy. Thank you.
great video and great camerawork & good lighting... especially since most of it's hard to see/reach just working it yourself, let alone trying to aim a camera... well done.
I was intimidate after watching this, but it’s really not that bad! Thanks for the video it’s actually very informative. Some details lost in the edit… the start is great, the end tapers off, there are more nuts holding the heater box in. Also, imo take the time to pull the carpet so you can actually pull the dash, would be time well spent to to not fight it. Thank you for the video it helped me a lot
I started smelling coolant in my cab today and found a puddle in my passenger weather tech. I wasn't looking forward to it before your video, but now I may just move somewhere I don't need it.

I’ll save you a ton of time. Just drop the steering column on the floor, no need to pull it. Just take the battery out. No need to remove the coolant reservoir, just recharge around and remove the nut.
@@lavnil85 remove the battery. That should give you enough room to get the one “stud” nut behind the coolant reservoir. If you have big arms it may be a problem. If so do the fender well trick

here I was saw the title and thought it was a do it in 15min trick. I'm about to do the AC evaporator core on my '12 1500. I've seen enough videos I think may be able to cheat and disassemble the blower/recirc end of the hvac box without pulling the dash.. may break a few of the back side clips, but that's why they invented rtv.
How do you disconnect the floor ducts from the heater core box? Working on a Ram 2500 diesel that has a center console and heat ducts under the carpet. Cant get the ducts off at all, they wont budge. Gotta get them off first but I can barely reach it with the dash pulled as far back as possible
@Boostismyfriend thanks for the tip for next time! Luckily I was able to squeeze my little fingers under the carpet and lift each duct off of their respective studs on the floor, then the box came right out after splitting it from the evaporator. Getting the ducts back on was WAY harder lol
I have 2015 2500 5.7 dripping coolant from a/c condensation drain tube, so suspect heater core leak, yesterday a/c worked great today a/c blowing hot You think I’m on right track with heater core, why did a/c suddenly quit working?
That was a horrible job to have to do. Probably easier to remove the engine, transmission, firewall, and the driver's side duals. Yuck. You did a good job. You did a great job filming it; filming it wasn't easy. Thank you.
I did this once on a 96 Grand am I had. Worst job ever ever in your driveway in winter. I have a 2020 Longhorn now. I dread the day I have this problem. There has got to be a way for manufacturers to create a heatercore access panel to avoid all of that.
I did mine put everything together and now don't ignition lights, no crank 😔 I checked all plugs, any ideas? Except the gray plug on column, top of till don't find where
I felt the video feel short of some information. Right from leaning the dash back to a loose air box to a reinstalled dash. What the heck happenes in between. I assume the dash came out of the truck? The air box came out. I got nothing from thos video...
37,000 other viewers got something out of it, if you fallow the steps its very basic, straight forwards on how to get it out, if you sit on your couch and critique your not getting entertainment out a video like this
Do you absolutely have to remove the freon to do this? I keep getting a check engine light for low coolant temp and only my passenger side vents get hot and idk if it's because of the thermostat or the heater core. How do I further diagnose it?
Wow can’t believe how ridiculous manufacturers have gotten what used to be a few hour few hundred dollar job depending on if you or the shop buys the part now looks like it’s a few thousand dollars now by the looks of this video hope my heater core isn’t going bad I would be better off scrapping my truck at this point
