How To Burn More Calories Lifting Weights (Do These 3 Things)

  • One of the biggest differences between weight lifting vs cardio is that while lifting weights is great for building muscle, it’s not so great if you’re looking to burn calories. In this video, I’ll explain how that affects your ability to burn fat and build muscle, and then cover how to burn more calories by covering three tweaks that you can make during your lifting workouts. By the end, you’ll end up with a full body weight training workout that you can get started with right away to burn fat.
Exercise alone is not very effective at losing fat if your diet is not under control. But with a proper diet, adding the right type of exercise to it can significantly speed up your results. When comparing weight lifting vs cardio, while resistance training doesn’t burn many calories compared to cardio, it does have one important advantage over the latter. Doing cardio alone can lead to a small amount of muscle loss.
This is important to note because muscle is what will help keep your metabolism high as you lose weight and will ensure you end up looking lean and muscular rather than just “skinny” after a diet. This means that, if you’re looking to burn fat and build muscle in the most optimal manner possible, a combination of resistance training with cardio is best. I’ll show you exactly how to do this with three tweaks and then give you an example workout that puts it into practice.
When it comes to how to burn more calories through weight lifting, the first tweak is with how much weight you’ll be lifting and how many reps you’ll be doing in your sets for each exercise. More specifically, research suggests that you can nearly double the number of calories you burn in a set by lifting lighter weights for more reps. However, although we can burn slightly more calories the lighter in weight we go, note that for the best muscle building results while still burning significantly more calories, a good recommendation is to use a weight that’s between 40-60% of the maximum weight you could lift for that exercise. For most people, this means choosing a weight that you could do around 15-30 reps with. Just remember, you still need to push yourself hard enough for this to be effective.
Tweak 2 to burn fat with weight training involves using the most muscle mass as possible within your workouts. Illustrating this is a 2017 study tested a variety of resistance training exercises and compared the calories burned. They compared several “isolation exercises” that only worked one small muscle at a time, to “compound exercises” that work several different muscles simultaneously. They found that lat pulldowns, which work several back muscles as well as the biceps, burned almost 20% more calories than bicep curls. Squats, which work the whole lower body, burn almost 35% more calories than leg extensions. We’ll apply this by filling our workout with big exercises that will work every single muscle of our body
Finally, the most important thing you can do to burn more calories is improve your time efficiency. How? You can do so by making use of a circuit style of training. Using this method will enable us to add more exercises and sets into our workout without having to stay in the gym any longer than normal. But we will want to be careful with the exercise selection to ensure we don’t compromise our gains by overworking the same muscle groups with not enough rest. Alright now that we’ve got the science down, let’s apply it into a workout that can be done either at a gym or even at home with just dumbbells.
The workout includes 3 circuits that each have 4 exercises. Within each circuit you will progress from one exercise to the next resting for only 15-20 seconds. Pick a weight that you could do somewhere between 15-30 reps with if you pushed hard. If you reach above 30 reps, then you know it’s time to use a heavier weight. Finally, if you’re a beginner, perform each circuit 2-3 times, intermediate 3-4 times, and advanced 4-5 times.
    Circuit 1:
DB Bench Press → DB Row → DB Shoulder Press → Reverse Crunch
    Circuit 2: Lower Body:
Goblet Squat→ DB RDL → DB Calf Raise → Weighted Crunch
    Circuit 3: Full Body:
Reverse Lunges → Push Up→ DB Facepulls → Plank
You’ll get the most benefit from this workout if you implement it no less than 2 but no more than 4 times a week. That said, I wouldn’t use this style of workout if your main goal is to build muscle and improve your strength.
For those looking for an all in one step-by-step program that’s personalized specifically for your body and your fitness goals, you can take the analysis quiz to discover which science-based program would be best for you and where your body is currently at below:

Hope you enjoyed this one! As mentioned in the video, these methods are not ideal if you'd like to prioritize building muscle and strength. But for those who are up for a challenge and looking for a way to burn more calories within their weights workouts without sacrificing gains, give this a shot! Ok, but your beginner shred program does not incorporate this technique. You do incorprate compound exercises with your exercise selection. Is this because its a beginner program? BTW, using your nutrition sheet with compound exercises has improved my physique a lot, even for this 56 yr old guy. Which I didn't think was possible. So overall, I love your programs. I hit a new low today in weight while maintaining the same strength! Only one problem here, I'm going to need a new wardrobe!

Train both weightlifting and cardio separately for optimal result...not by mixing it lmao. Weightlifting itself doesn't even burn a lot of calories, if you do lightweight & high reps, you're only going to burn that extra 10 to 20 calories, & you're not building up strength by using lightweight.

The #1 thing is planned and structured diet, because the only way for your body to burn fat is to use it as energy. Basically, you need to eat below your energy maintenance level (in terms of calories) and your fat cells will be used to compensate the missing energy (calories). That's how your body works. There are other things to consider as well, such as hormonal status, diseases... but caloric deficit is a must. You have a lot of online diet helper like dietarize, or even promusclegains... Losing weight is just a simple math, really...

Jeremy is by no means saying to ONLY do cardio here. Facts… you may can burn more calories during cardio, but it’s the EPOC that makes strength training superior because having more muscle creates a higher metabolism…muscle is metabolically active tissue. Plus the body gets “acclimated” so to speak to cardio, so you have to keep increasing intensity or time to keep getting the same benefits, which is a losing battle for fat loss. Strength training is a must… Jeremy here is just showing how to phase into a higher calorie burning style. And as he said, not the best for actually building muscle, but more for helping to maintain it (which hard sprints are also great for)…. So I def wouldn’t stick with this style for long periods of time!

I enjoyed the video and find the tweaks useful. I would have liked it to have included the amount of time the group that did lifting and cardio spent working out each session. I am going to incorporate 2 of the circuits twice a week since I love using a rowing machine for about an hour before using weights or machines. Polar Beats app claims I burn around 230 calories in my 30 minute (8-12 reps x 4) strength training session and I would like to boost it while building more muscle.

I do that with bodyweight and elsatic bands in a park. If you want a circuit with no muscle interference you can break it down with one arm, one core and one leg exercice. You can also walk to do an active rest.
    first day break down;
    - Push with your arm (puch ups variations)
    - lower back (pulling on the elastics)
    - ischio with box lunge and sprints
    second day:
    - Pull with your arms using the elastics with varius grip position and inclination
    - Abs...
    - Calves...
    Third day:
    - Shoulder ...
    - oblics...
    Quads...

    1. a quick 10-15 mins warm-up with some abs excercies of choice
    2. Circuit 1: Squat , lunges across the gym to the abs machine, do abs, lunges back.
    3. Circuit 2: Bench press, inclined dumbell pull (to do some back work), "butterfly" for chest, crunches.
    4. Circuit 3: Deadlift, triceps in crossover with a bar, Pull-down with a narrow handle, isolation on quads.
    5. High-intensity interval cardio (elliptic or treadmill)
Every excercise is 10 reps (except for lunges), weight is chosen accordingly.

Circuit training is pretty good at burning more calories, especially if you make it in a way where you have to walk a lot from A to B to C to D to E etc (depends on the circuit) so the more you walk in between sets the more steps you do. also when I train I usually walk a little bit when I rest. I don't like to stand still or sit down, ofc I don't go crazy. but just a little bit of walking. Also, I really hate high rep workouts, the most I can manage is 15 maximum, and even then I love my 12's lol (I'm more focused on strength so that's why)

      3) Ağırlık egzersizi sırasında dinlenme periyodunu kısa tutarak idman yoğunluğunu artırmak (her egzersizde farklı kas grubunu çalıştırmak şartıyla)
Jeremy videonun son dakikalarında da bu yapıda bir egzersiz programı (circuit training) veriyor.
      Umarım yardımcı olabilmişimdir.

You can easily calculate whats best... as an engineer with a basic understanding of physics chemistry adn thermodynamics i can simply break it down. A calorie is just a simple amount of energy, the amount of energy you need to heat up 1 gram of water by 1 kelvin. The more wheight you move and for how much a distance is important. So taking half the weight doing 2 times the reps burns the same calories + you have to add in your own bodywheight. The faster you do it the bigger the amount of workload you do is the bigger the amount of calories you burn. Just compare wheight, range of motion and speed. Simple as that

hope somebody answer my question: the 15-20s rest is in between each exercises or after completing exercise 1->4 then take 15-20s rest?
    So example Circuit #1
    Db Bench press->15s rest -> Db rows -> 15s rest -> Db shoulder press -> 15s rest -> reverse crunch -> 15s rest, repeat x3-5 times
Or is it rest only after all exercises in a circuit done?

IMO it is better to lift weights only to build muscles and, on different days, do cardio to burn more calories. Some years ago a did something like the routines in this video and I wasn't building muscles at all. Everything changed when I start separating cardio and lifting.

Hi Jeremy, thanks for videos and information. I have a question for you. There's a problem with my arm, it's Tennis Elbow. I couldn't do biceps. My family doctor told me not to work out for 8 weeks. I did the same and I've recently started working out, but again I feel slight pain. What kind of exercises do you recommend to relieve the pain and strength this part of body?

    • @GareBear-x2c
      @GareBear-x2c 2 роки тому

Something I would recommend is buying elbow sleeves/braces. They support your elbows, almost like wearing bicycle protection.

my elbow pain was fixed by switching supinated grips for neutral grips. hammer curls and push up bars eliminated all tennis elbow for me.

I walk in circles in between sets adds a mile of walking to my lift. No expert but I really think resting between sets does not need to mean sitting on the bench, I have noticed no issues doing this. Probably more heart healthy to stay in mid-low range the whole workout

For me the relevant question would rather be how to burn LESS calories. Burning more calories means more metabolic and systemic fatigue (so less recovery and less potential for high volume training), also more care needed for pre and post workout nutrition (making it more difficult to just go directly from your office straight to the gym with an empty stomach), and in general more food to eat all along the day (more time to do the shopping and cooking, more meal breaks to plan in the middle of your day, and more efforts to digest everything you need).
I'm not sure I can take all your advice backwards, but me going for fewer harder sets with longer rests is probably consistent with what you show (circuit training might still be worth considering but with a much longer rest time, so that each muscle gets an effective 5min rest instead of only the traditional 2-3 min).
What is less clear is how I should interpret your statement on composite exercises. Currently I do a lot of them, I love them, but you seem to suggest that I should consider cutting on them. However I am not sure what exactly is your comparison: if (4:44) a set of squat burns *only* 35% more calories compared to leg extensions, while using at least twice the muscle mass (assuming this larger amount of muscle is stimulated just as strongly), then it would suggest that a squat is actually a way to waste LESS calories (compared to leg extensions + glutes + a few more abs).
