Doc the Skif sturdy is definately my favourite the recurve knife blade looks great but a little bit finicky to sharpen havnt got flipper seems way to go
The blade steel is 8cr13mov. Here is a quick overview of that cheap Chinese steel. These are Chinese-produced steels that recently started showing up in Chinese-made knives. 9Cr is the top end of the series and is quite good - as good or better than AUS-8. Type 8Cr, the more common formulation, is worse than AUS-8: a little more prone to corrosion and not quite as hard. It is very cheap though, and when ground appropriately it can be a real winner from a value standpoint. Note: Don’t bother with anything less than 8Cr in this series. Steels 7Cr and below aren’t worth your time or money. They lack the carbon necessary to hold an edge, even during mild use
I didnt realize there were people truly too stupid to grasp a simple concept until I read your comment. But here it is, and here you are...if pointing out that one company has copied a design from another makes you a snob, then yeah, anyone who ever says "hey that knife looks like..." Must be a knife snob.
He's not being a knife snob, he's stating a fact, the lockdisc, and clip, and overall designs are stolen from hinderer, I'm sorry that upset you, perhaps a warm cup of coco will make it all better.
Losing a those Hinderer knives hurt. HINDERER is my favorite knife company and they aren't cheap, they make some of the best quality knives I know your still feeling the pain. I hope and prey you find them.
Well don't be too upset . They never really were Demo Ranch anythings. They bought into a company that already existed and all the models they sold were already produced under the Skif name before that. They ended up selling off their share in just a few years. Though Demo Ranch is a great gun source, They never were knife guys and it really showed.
Great vid I've been waiting to see your opinion on them also I was wondering if you have ever heard of eberlestock and if you have what you think of there stuff.
I carried one for about 6 years and it was a fantastic daily carry knife. I'm a bigger person so the size wasn't a concern, and I never had any issues with it. I've since moved to a much higher quality knife with a Benchmade. Looking back the Trident was a little overpriced honestly, but I got it when I was like 18 and it had that tacti-cool look that 18 year old me loved. Basically from use it's a fine knife, a little overpriced IMO. I never had any issues with it, I still have my very well worn one, but I wouldn't buy another one if that makes sense. Even though I never had any actual issues with the knife itself.
I agree with @Alex Campbell about it being overpriced. I don't own one but I've handled one. The action is smooth, and it locks solid. AUS-8 is good steel, but unless you really need a line cutter I think you can probably find a better value for the money. If you want a "rescue" knife in that price range you can save half the money with the Kershaw Barricade. 8Cr13 is basically Chinese AUS-8, and it has G10 scales instead of plastic. It's not assisted but it's so smooth it doesn't need to be. If you like the look and feel of the SOG though go for it. It probably won't fail you.
@@DocP91B The line cutter isn't great honestly. The way the notch is cut in you have to go so deep to get to the blade. Plus you are going against the assist lock to pull on it since it just uses the blade. It's easily the weakest feature of the knife in my opinion. The lock is fantastic though, it's actually what pushed me to Benchmade was they had a better designed version of the lock from the SOG. I do wish they would replace the scales with G-10 and knock the price down to like 60. It would be fantastic, if not a bit gimicky then at least. I still look back fondly on it though. It served me well and has been retired to a sentimental nick nack box
@@DocP91B First of all, thank you very much for that info and suggestion. And also videos, of course. :) Tbh, the price and the glassbreaker are only reason, why I did not instabuy it. It probably is not much pocket-friendly for EDC purposes. I know your opinion about line cutters in general, but I think that it is a good option to have. Price of this Kershaw is very nice, but I don't like how it looks and absolutely hate its color. Seems like there is only orange version available. At least in my area. Isn't there any similiar knife without glassbreaker (or with removable one) in basic black/silver color you can recommend? :)
That's not my argument at all. If the headlight is supposed to be an analogy to the knife, what I was showing was more like if one car company copied the design of another company's headlight and then passed it off as an original design of their own headlight.
@@jacrispiejackson69 Actually they talked about their "patented design" in the original video with Demo & Lunkers showing the knives. But why does it matter? Does it make it any less copied if they don't talk about it? Like somehow that makes it less of a rip off of someone else's design if they just don't say it was theirs? Is it only imitated or copied if the company says they invented it, rather than quietly using the elements of someone else's design?
DocP91B if they said it was their design then that’s wrong because it’s not but he didn’t say it was his patented design he said the lock was patented don’t try to twist his words and who cares if it looks the same? If someone wants a cheaper alternative that looks then same then they have it now not everyone jerks off to knife porn some people just want a normal knife for normal activities and every company makes shit that looks like other companies like vehicles, video games , phones, clothes, guns, shoes, and many more things literally anything you name has been made the same by multiple companies
Just gonna be completely honest, besides you and just a few people in these comments. No one gives a damn about hinderer similarities or whatever. 99% of people I know just want to know if it’s gonna be a good knife and it’s not gonna break the bank. And if it borrows elements from a super expensive knife for a much cheaper knife that does the same job then you better believe I’m buying the skif
I don't blame people who don't care about the Hinderer elements. I would wager that the 99% of the people that don't care aren't serious knife enthusiasts or collectors though. Stealing designs (and lets face it, it's stealing, not borrowing - it's not like they are going to give it back after a while, right?) is nothing new in the knife industry and cheaper production brands have been taking from the more expensive brands for decades. Some companies even completely counterfeit the high end knives. Like I said in my video I doubt that Matt or Rob even really knew what they were looking at because they are simply aren't big knife guys, and the original Skif put these designs out years ago. You can't fault the guys for what the company did years before they were involved. I also can't fault anyone who buys these knives. I only tested 4 but each one was well made and even the least expensive was as tough as the most expensive one I tested. I expect that most people who bought these initially bought them mainly because they are the official Demolition Ranch brand. Honestly, I've bought things for dumber reasons. The Hinderer issues might turn off some folk but I don't think it's going to hurt the brand much. It's just another day in the world of Chinese made knives.
Lunkerstv did the same thing with Favorite rods. You can get the same rods and reals for a lot cheaper with another brand name on them. There are comparisons on youtube and you can see which pieces they went cheap on also.
@@eugenemonica5890 you're welcome and actually it's Demolition Ranch but everyone just calls it Demo Ranch and it'll still come up under a search for Demo Ranch regardless.
There doesn't need to be. A knife designed with changeable scales would have a liner. Some higher end ones do too even without the changeable scales. There are a lot of knives that just have the scale. It's not good or bad, it just is what it is.
I love the designs and I guess now I know why. I have two of the flippers and can't stand them. Great to hold and use but the jimping rips up my fingers every time i open it. Maybe it's just mine and weren't finished as nice since it's not an issue you seemed to have in the video.
Thanks for the knife review but I don't think these are for me if I was looking for a great cheap knife I would get a Ganzo. Thanks for the upload and keep the great videos coming.
Dude.....you paid 400+ bucks for a wharncliffe pocket knife? Hinderer? Please explain to me what more you get for the extra 250+ bucks of a Spyderco or Benchmade? It's looks like a good blade.....but it also looks like a Kershaw Emerson CQB..... Don't understand.
I guess the answer would be the same you would give a guy who asked what you get in a $200 Benchmade or Spyderco that you don't get in a $30 Kershaw. Or a BMW versus a Toyota. Or a Sig instead of a Hi Point. What I would say you are buying for the extra money of a Hinderer first is a hand built knife that has a quality factor you don't find most other places. You get top quality materials and engineering. You get a heft and a solid feel that you don't find most other places. You get lifetime support and service along with the knife. You are buying a knife that is built like a tank and practically indestructible, and has a low depreciation (of course depending on how much you abuse it) and a high resale value. And beyond that you are buying into a community of users that are really great people and have forums and groups to share experience and use with. All of this is worth it to some, but not worth it to others. It's like spending money on anything in the world. I had one troop under me that spent $2000 on rims for his little Honda. I thought that was insane. The Fist Sergeant actually had me sit him down and council him on financial responsibility. He was able to cite about 8 different reasons why it was worth it...to him. He always though my $400 knife was crazy expensive. Even though I took that to the field with every time we went and his car stayed home. You have to decide what is worth it to you. There are some brands even more expensive than the Big Hindy. Sorry thia is so wordy, but I thought your question deserved a real answer.
@@DocP91B to me there's a price level on quality.....that point where you don't get anymore knife (or gun) for the value of your dollar. There tools....meant to do a job or jobs..... Anybody that know knives knows there is a difference between a 30 dollar CRKT and a 200 dollar BM AFO2 or Gerber 06. Steel and construction being the most obvious....also being American made (Luv US). I can't see what would be so much better about a 400 plus dollar knife that looks like a plethora of others of similar quality (Not counting custom made knives that can be quite pricey and deservedly so, being one of a kind). That said....it's America and I probably came off like an ass..... rereading it..... Whatever floats your boat. I appreciate the long answer btw. Thank you for explaining.
@@redriver6541 yeah you cant really knock other people for this. Having an expensive taste is fine. Its not your money. There is a point of diminishing returns but is it really that bad to spend 400 dollars on a knife if you can afford it and it dosent break the bank. So yeh I totally get what y'all are saying...... I don't need all of these knives.....but I need them in my life. Lol.
I called Skif and they said the knife is not designed to open the way you see in the video. I received an email later that day from Skif to return the knife and they would send out another one. I received the knife a few days later and there was no difference, still required you to flip your wrist to get to lock
The RHC is a measure of how well the steel is hardened. But the physical properties of the steel are determined by the molecular organization of the elements in it. The right RHC gives you a blade that is hard enough to hold and edge without being so hard that it is brittle and breaks. The actual degree to which it holds the edge though, is up to the composition of the steel.

The whole thing seems a sketchy to me. They can say that that they are not knife guys, so they were ignorant to some things. However, if you put your name on a product and promote it you are responsible for that product. The Hinderer elements are undeniable. They have a fan base that will buy whatever they are selling. Taking knives that were neither designed or made in the United States and slapping American flags on the boxes and and attempting to sell them to their fans at exorbitant is super weak. When they got called out, they apologized and lowered the prices. At least they did that. However, all of the other shady stuff is still there. If you think I'm wrong, let me know. I could be off base. Just calling it like I see it.
Its your opinion. Its as valid as any other. I tuink you do have a point about the responsibility to know what they are selling. Obviously not you or me or anyone else knows what their intent was, but yeah, I can say that I wouldn't put my name on a product without knowing as much about it as possible.
I've watched demo ranch for quiet awhile and one thing that's happened is Matt went from UA-camr to entrepreneur. Knives make sense for the market that he's in. He's got the guns, cars and just all around man's man market appeal so it makes sense to sell knives. One thing about Matt that I've noticed is that he can just dive head first into things and be ignorant about all the details. I really think he didn't realize that the knife community is huge and just as passionate about knives as gun people are about firearms. I really don't think there was any maliciousness behind it, he has multiple successful UA-cam channels, he's a veterinarian and has an apparel line so I doubt this was a money grab but rather just another venture that appeals to his demographic. There's also most likely marketing strategists behind Matt advising him on what his next moves should be so it very well may be that Matt originally didn't set those prices. Now with that said I am a bit disappointed he went to knives because I don't see the passion for it and because of that you lose the people who are passionate about knives.
*So those knives are made in China, using cheap Chinese 8cr13Mov steel.designed by a Ukrainian company who's copying a lot of US designs.* *All that with US flags on the box for some reason and sold at the price of US made knives using high quality steel.* *The box is probably not even made in the US ... and don't get me started with the random "In god we trust" ... why is it even there?*
Did they move the factory’s to the US? Where are they actually assembling these knives? That to me decides if it is an American knife or not. If they build and manufacture the knives outside of the US but the Headquarters is in the US, that does not make it a US built knife to me.

@@benbaker321 it's not a problem. Not everyone is always concerned with integrity and stuff. Some people are raised with those kinds of values and some aren't. Everyine is entitled to their own opinion. But it's not so much and opinion as to whether or not you heard about the Skif knives. In the end, honestly, I was just curious as to how you would answer. I did notice that most people that don't care about where the design came from are also pretty cheap about what they carry in their pocket. Or maybe a lot of folks honestly don't really understand the difference between high quality and generic quality steel blades, soft steel veraus titanium frames, finely tuned pivots and hand fitted & assembled quality. A lot of people also never really had a job or situation where a good knife litterally could be the pivotal tool to their survival. So whatever. The really ironic part is the people who comment about "knife snobs" or not caring about the Hinderer design features or automatically get defensive about seeing a high quality, high cost knife here, are too defensive to actually bother listening to the fact that I give high praise to the actual construction and performance of the Skif knives. What do you think about SOG Trident Elite? I am not a knife person, but I somehow love the look of Trident.
@@souprocks44 Thank you for your review! :)
Yo i have created headlights for cars. No one can use it but me. Everyone else is copying me. Your argument was as valid as this one.
That's not my argument at all. If the headlight is supposed to be an analogy to the knife, what I was showing was more like if one car company copied the design of another company's headlight and then passed it off as an original design of their own headlight.
@@DocP91B it's like plagiarism
DocP91B did they ever say that it was their own design or are you just assuming that?

It's cheap shit
Shouldn't there be a liner on the g-10 side.

Can someone explain how a56-58 hrc knife doesnt hold an edge because of the steel used on it? Is the blade just not that high of hrc?
The RHC is a measure of how well the steel is hardened. But the physical properties of the steel are determined by the molecular organization of the elements in it. The right RHC gives you a blade that is hard enough to hold and edge without being so hard that it is brittle and breaks. The actual degree to which it holds the edge though, is up to the composition of the steel.

Harbor Freight and for a lot less money.

I tuink you do have a point about the responsibility to know what they are selling. wedo4444 you are exactly right.
Then you better not buy a so called US truck truck the, most are made in Mexico now.
