May 05, 2015: From a long way to the top, to rock bottom - the scandal that's rocking Australia's most popular rock band. Read more at www.9news.com.au
I'm glad not all the comments are insults towards Phil regarding his appearance. He made mistakes and had to face the consequences, but deep down he's a good guy and I feel so bad scrolling through the mean things said about him because he doesn't deserve that. Nobody said being in the music business was easy, I heard he spent some time with a shrink during the Powerage tour. He's suffered mentally and physically, Bon's death did not help the situation either. So please remember that Phil is only human and an amazing musician. His contribution to AC/DC is something we should cherish for a long, long time.
Phil Rudd is actually one of the few drummers i really pay attention to when i hear him in AC/DC..Groove.. the drive. listen to the rhythm he brings to the band..
Phil's basic drum beats and minimal fills are really simple - and yet they are fantastic! The way he perfectly sits back on the beat is a huge component of the band's heavy, unique sound. The other members of AC-DC owe a lot of their success to this highly musical drummer.
I can't believe he told the reporter that he didn't have any fans, I've always liked Phil, I was older before I ever knew he had left the band in the 80's but I was always a fan.
Phil Rudd’s feel and groove was just as important to AC/DC as Ringos was to the Beatles.Played some fantastic uncomplicated chops and grooves and showed incredible restraint from wanking all over the songs which sadly so many drummers do today! He’s in my top ten drummers....
Meth is one heck of a (bad) drug! Phil looked so young and vital during the awesome River Plate Argentina concert in 2009. Wish him all the best and thank you for bringing us a lifetime of great, uncompromising rock'n roll!
I worked with two very hot twins at Kroger’s in Surfside Beach, S.C in 1983. They worked in the deli and they knew I was AC/DC obsessed, so they told me about how they rocked Bon together right before he split town. Another great rock and roll story.
I started listening to AC/DC when I was 15. I hung out with older friends. But my best friend PIE(rip) got his license 1 year before the rest of us. He was my best friend ever and he had a 1985 black camero tricked out. Anyway we lived and breathed AC/DC. AND buy hanging out with are older friends even made us love AC/DC. Seen them 8 times. But AC/DC was at their best when BON SCOTT was lead singer. He had a great voice and the moral of the story is AC/DC was the best kick ass get drunk get laid and fucking rock band of all time. I like Phil Rudd and he was the original drummer. Best song for me is if you want blood you got it. I rock every day to them.RIP MALCOLM YOUNG. 🎤🔊🔊🍻🤘
I know this is about Phil, and I hope he’s changed his life around, but Bon was the sexiest guy ever and probably the most widely recognized rock singer in the world! Every time I play AC⚡️DC it gives me goosebumps and makes me want to get up and dance and sing along!! I’m a fan 4 life no matter how many line up changes they’ve been through and troubles!
Girl, I hear that. Damned I miss Bon. Brian is good, don’t get me wrong, but few had the showmanship that Bon and Angus had together. The music though, I have a list I call “House Cleaning Music” and it’s almost all AC/DC. Not too many make me want to get up, dance, clean house and sing out loud like I was by myself in the shower! Broken hearted about Bon of course and now Malcom. I never got to see them in concert either. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Saw Phil with ACDC for the first time in 1981 at age 14 and during the Black Ice tour for the last time (I assume) and he held it down both times. One of my favorite drummers.
The only perfect sound AC/DC ever got was with Phil on drums. Not sure what happened after FLICK OF THE SWITCH in 1983 or 84 but they should never have replaced him. That was when they started going downhill. Even when he rejoined in the 90s, something was lost. I have a lot of respect for Phil Rudd and think AC/DC should have treated him better.
@@dodibenabba1378 Did he actually do it or was it just something he said? Whatever it was, it got settled in court. Phil Rudd has been known to get occasional help for mental problems for many decades. Maybe if AC/DC had treated him better back in the 80s, he wouldn't have gone so far off the rails that he said he wanted to kill somebody (and is that really so uncommon?) He's one of the greatest rock and roll drummers of all time and AC/DC wouldn't have made it without Phil. He's back in the band where he belongs and they sound better than they have since the early 80s, a great rock and roll comeback! It's a long way to the top...
Phil is and always will be the best! I still pray for him bc we all need a little Love from above and i feel sad for him... even when you are at the 👊top👊
When I was a young drummer in the 80's (easily impressed by complex fills and busy grooves) I didn't realise that the best drumming on the radio at the time was Phil Rudd. Like Ringo, Bonham and others, he made grooves that were solid, iconic, infectious and exciting even when they were laid back. Usually no fills, but Jailbreak (a masterful groove) has a few very nicely executed fills in the break down. I wish I could go back in time and see Rudd, M Young and Evans working out the early grooves: just a video of those conversations and takes would be a musical education.
The pulse of the drummer is a huge part of the band sound. Ringo with the Beatles. Watts with the Stones. Bill Kreutzmann with the Grateful Dead. Without the right drummer, the band is nothing.
Well just hope phill gets his life sorted out and his mental health as well we all stuff up at times but what he was doing was bringing the band down with him I like phill so much just keep going phill you have a fan in me buddy I've been down that parth as well but not as bad as you and deep down I know you can change for the better
There's nothing hardcore about any member of AC DC, except for Bon Scott, but he died decades ago, so get over it. There's nothing hardcore about anyone who plays blues-rock anyways.
nothing hardcore bout blues rockers?? ummmmm really, you ever do any research into that? look into the blues before you talk about what you know nothing about
None of it matters - fantastic drummer - he'll be back on tour with them. I mean come on - it's Dirty Deeds come to life - they write and play music that is who they are. As if any of us aren't going to continue to follow the group - Phil's record is great - nothing wrong with it. Love the man.
Having crashed and burned myself in life as the result of drugs, you wake up one day and wonder who that guy was who did all those horrible things and where the wheels came off (career, wife, money, house, legal issues, you name it). No matter how much you think you are in control, it has you and the consequences are always ugly - I've attended too many funerals over the years of friends I've met who were just as serious as I was about staying sober. Ten years sober this past August; humble and grateful for every moment, but still dealing with consequences because some people will never let you forget (that's their problem - I've moved on). I wish him all the luck in the world.
Think ~ thanks for sharing. I was really beginning to wonder what others were thinking while reading comments (critical & judgmental). I had to thumbs up & reply to your comment. I wish Phil the best. Addiction is a beast. It keeps you in bondage & that's evil. Sickness is what brings people back and back because it's simply awful & painful. @@brandonmorris8891 keeping it basic isn't as easy as it sounds , flash and fills are normally associated with skill and talent but when it comes to this band's direction and sound you can't underestimate the value of Phil's contributions. His simplicity and the marriage of the brothers riffs is the genius of their sound , each integral part a contribution and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. What Phil doesn't play (flashy fills and difficult parts) means as much as what he does play , rock solid groove defining legendary performance. He can knock it out it's second nature. @@Squirrelconga yes I got the pun, when I see anything about that little Ol' Band from Texas, I feel obligated to tell the world about them, also there was a time when Frank was the only 1 with a Beard.
Everyone says Phil is limited yet, there's not a single drummer on the planet who can play the songs like him. Nobody can, cept Phil. I don't care what drummers are out there. They can't touch Phil.
Always prefered Chris Slade. Less static on the stage, much more in the move.. always found phil passive. And when we see what he become today... He should have stopped drugs and bad life.
The man did his job,he played the same beat because the music called for the same beat, what was he supposed to do,pull a Neil Pert in the middle of highway to hell
SongSwan Phil was an excellent drummer , in so called " Minimalism " he was a master of timing , after he first left , Malcolm found the music suffered with Chris Slade ,Malcolm asked the band to bring Phil back to right the ship, because Malcolm found his timing and playing was 100% better with Phil on drums
SongSwan what he does and what the Ramones drummers did is perfect, utterly perfect. And not every metal drummer could duplicate it, some of those busy technical drummers would be shit in those bands.
Agree. People were critics of Ringo's drumming too, but a good drummer plays for the band's needs. And if he was Keith Moon style it would have not complimented John and Paul's talents. He wasn't just keeping the beat he was accenting what they were doing, like his patterns in "A Day in the Life." Phil's style accented Angus & Malcom's style.
I can barely understand a damn word Phil says! Which sucks, because I want to know what he's saying! One hell of a drummer though! I'm glad I had the honor to see him with AC/DC twice!
ACDC stopped being a band ages ago and became a business/brand. Angus is CEO and he made an executive decision to terminate Rudd's contract with said business. So glad I got to see them in 2015 on the last stop of their Aus tour in Perth, literally the last night of the leg..and with Brian Johnson, a memory for the rest of my days, I've even framed the ticket.
hard to find drummers like Rudd... I have shot down dozens of drummers in try outs for my bands through theyears ...etc. they can't stay in the pocket... get bored in the pocket and play inappropriate beats for certain songs.. what matters is band tightness, what is appropriate for a beat in a song, dynamics ,etc.. so difficult for so many people who want to be good drummers to understand even guitarists endless guitar soloing and singers not shutting up at the end of a song... really it is overkill ... That is why you need a lead dog to rein in this crap... you might say a great conductor who will call out the nuances that can make you great or make you a garage band for life...
As a drummer whose life fell apart because of the complications of having a cheating ex and backstabbing friends while graduating from college and getting subsequently arrested for weed and my ex getting a restraining order against me for trying to even talk to her... This video made.me.feel personally pissed for Phil's sake. He's the man and I hope he knows that. ACDC isn't ACDC to me without him.screw his band mates pearl clutching politics acting Luke they can't associate with him now. I hope he is ok.
AC/DC as a band has run it's course. They were extremely lucky to pick up Brian Johnson and keep going when Bon Scott passed. With Angus the only original member left, it's no longer "AC/DC". It was a good run boys.
"Disappointed"? Angus was probably too smart to contact Rudd back then. And now? Who knows what will happen anyway. Maybe it's time for Angus to pack up his guitar pick and just enjoy his life.
I hope you're right. When Angus finished the scheduled tour last year with Stevie and Axl filling in, I could tell his heart wasn't in it any more. And now with his beloved brother gone, I think Angus should try to concentrate on something else. I don't know what, but I'm sure he can find something worthy of his talent.
He truly is that. It seems all the Young boys were wonderful people. Angus has worked so hard to bring music and more to fans of the band for 44 years. He deserves to retire with peace and dignity. Somehow, though, I feel he'll be back, maybe with something different.
Gnostic Mom - I think Cliff and Phil and Malcolm were all part of the chemistry. It's gone. What made AC/DC special and trippy and so real from their first albums has passed by - and now Elvis has a motherfucker of a rhythm guitarist up in da sky...
Gnostic Mom - also I feel Malcom had a very natural feel for a riff, both relaxed and vicious, offhandedly heavy, and without someone like that there IS no AC/DC just as there's no Led Zeppelin now either sans Bonham.
Phil Rudd drove in the backseat of my car with me and a girlfriend from Vets auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa after their concert in 1979 to the Hawkeyes Hotel by the Des Moines Airport, where they were staying. How, that happened, I have no idea. The other guys were in a bus. The stage hands went around during the concert handing out leg patches to all the girls; that got me and my friend backstage. We were clustered like meat waiting for the lions to be let loose. I remember Phil being very kind and gentlemanly; nothing pretentious. In a hotel room I got talking with some stagehand who gave me some Australian money, that I still have to this day!. I left the after party when I saw all the drugs come out. Never saw Phil again that evening.
Head Job would have earned him Suzuki Alto. In 1998 owned such Elephant Rollshoe. 800ccm, 3cylinders, second hand. Second sleep, crashed in back of another car.
Diogenes26 But those who stay maybe straights, likly as not wouldn't trade their perspective (take on life) for their drug taking life. Give me a million and I could take some drugs. But otherwise my guess is I have the best. Yet the material possessions are not as theirs is. In fact they are millionaires and I'm out of work and in debt. But I can still laugh some times. It's like the difference of being sane or insane. In control or out of control. Some of their laughter is paranoid insane laughter. Not knowing what is going on and so they laugh. It sort of fills up the insane gap so the audience might not suspect they are mad. But my laughter is paranoia free. Methamphetamines cause paranoia. Looking out of the cutain to see if they are being watched then telling them selves, Nah! It's just the drugs when in fact they are being watched. I wouldn't waste my time with jealousy of them. A bit jealousy of their volume of money. But after another 10 days I may have a bit. At least enough for my rent. Contentment is obtainable with or with out cash. It's not cash dependent. But I'd rather have cash and contentment. So not all is rosy for me. But I wouldn't change to a druggie. Been there, done that.

I was merely saying: "Frank Beard doesn't have a beard"
Phil/ No Fill
Beard/ No Beard 🤭
@@Squirrelconga yes I got the pun, when I see anything about that little Ol' Band from Texas, I feel obligated to tell the world about them, also there was a time when Frank was the only 1 with a Beard.
We all make mistakes He’s a good drummer. I have been listening to this band since I was a kid. I hope they keep rocking
He broke all their hearts
Everyone says Phil is limited yet, there's not a single drummer on the planet who can play the songs like him. Nobody can, cept Phil. I don't care what drummers are out there. They can't touch Phil.
He has a swing and solid simplicity that is all his own.
He is a groove monster . Amazing
Ok lol
Always prefered Chris Slade. Less static on the stage, much more in the move.. always found phil passive. And when we see what he become today... He should have stopped drugs and bad life.
LOL ! Yes buddy, We gonna pray Saint Phil.. In Jail!
Met a dude in Nassau years ago (1986), said he was Phil, nice to meet ya, lets do a bump.
I've heard that this *A Current Affair* programme is the best place for hard-hitting, investigative journalism at its *finest*
The man did his job,he played the same beat because the music called for the same beat, what was he supposed to do,pull a Neil Pert in the middle of highway to hell
SongSwan Being a fan of both bands, That was fukn hillarious man ! Cheers
Very well stated Patti!
Are we forgetting the 10 years or so he wasn’t in the band? Why show clips of Thunderstruck video when he ain’t drumming in it....
Looks like just a sad old dude. Proof money can’t buy you happiness....
I can barely understand a damn word Phil says! Which sucks, because I want to know what he's saying! One hell of a drummer though! I'm glad I had the honor to see him with AC/DC twice!
I think Phill and Ozzy went to the same grammar school.
@@billydow1971 😆
And Lemmy
Phils thundering drum groove introduced me to ACDC.
Drives a Ferrari, but doesn't bother to get teeth. Curious.
BookemDano 😂
Have you had soup? It's fucking great!
He was not the original drummer.
Used to live on his street in tauranga for about 5 years. He's a good guy
@@jahrhome Beautiful place...I'm also from Victoria Australia but Olds are from the North island of New Zealand.
ACDC stopped being a band ages ago and became a business/brand. Angus is CEO and he made an executive decision to terminate Rudd's contract with said business. So glad I got to see them in 2015 on the last stop of their Aus tour in Perth, literally the last night of the leg..and with Brian Johnson, a memory for the rest of my days, I've even framed the ticket.
the cars this guy owns...wow!!!
AND MIGHTY KISS!!!
hard to find drummers like Rudd...
I have shot down dozens of drummers in try outs for my bands through theyears
...etc.
they can't stay in the pocket...
get bored in the pocket and play inappropriate beats for certain songs..
what matters is
band tightness, what is appropriate for a beat in a song, dynamics ,etc..
so difficult for so many people who want to be good drummers to understand
even guitarists endless guitar soloing and singers not shutting up at the end of a song...
really it is overkill ...
That is why you need a lead dog to rein in this crap...
you might say a great conductor who will call out the nuances that can make you great or make you a garage band for life...
The best drummer in the world. He made dc tick
This is so sad. I love Phil. Damn crank...I hate it.
Crack, isn't it ???
As a drummer whose life fell apart because of the complications of having a cheating ex and backstabbing friends while graduating from college and getting subsequently arrested for weed and my ex getting a restraining order against me for trying to even talk to her... This video made.me.feel personally pissed for Phil's sake. He's the man and I hope he knows that. ACDC isn't ACDC to me without him.screw his band mates pearl clutching politics acting Luke they can't associate with him now. I hope he is ok.
Need subtitle translations when Phil speaks. Ha! What the hell did he just say?
pattii55 ikr?!
He should talk to ozzy
Man what a fucking legend
he gave them some street cred in their waning years... thats rock and roll af
This guy did fuck all, leave him alone, no scandal, great musician.
Angus couldn't have done it any other way. He had to go to court and who knows what sort of a sentence he'd get.
Well if you got to be fired it’s a nice way to live.
SMOKIN LOVELY LONG LIVE "ICE"
🤪💨
60 years old Wolverine :)
Phil is the best 🏆
is that Quint from Jaws?
Nah, Wolverine's crystal meth frazzled Grandad.
is it, or the dude from wolfcreek,
I like how they say ac/dc aacadaacaa
Reorter : "Wrecked by scandal"
Acdc: "Makes a World Tour"
Phil, you're 60. Time to get sober.
are you shitting me, what for ?
Shit why get sober at 60’s live it up till the end
Stephen Jones why if u can 1 afford it and 2 fucking why
I'm guessing everyone else here is apparently drug addicts.
To Stephen Jones
Born May 19th 1954? Which means he was 60 in May 2014.
Phil's genius lays in his simplicity, don't be deceived.
Gnostic Mom they already have called it a day after Brian couldn't continue due to health reasons
Im sure it was hard fot Angus but he did it for Phil
Either you're in control of the drugs or don't do them at all.
NO this is 2015 - there are 2 original members the Brothers Young - damn this report can't even get it right!
Drugs kills a person and the person within ✌
Addiction turns nice people into psychopaths. It kills everything they are and everyone that loves them.

But those who stay maybe straights, likly as not wouldn't trade their perspective (take on life) for their drug taking life.
M.L Happy Gaming NL for you 💩
Bar none hands down one of the best rock drummers ever. No one can play a groove like him. With the velocity of a sledgehammer.
Fanboy your ignorance is amazing. I know 4 drummers that could replace this old POS, without a missing beat.
R.i.p Malcolm !
Hope things go well for him. We all f..k up from time to time.
