For me it is missing a night-ride. How irritating is it to the cyclist when he gets lit up by a car from the side, especially with Xenon lights (or is it not?). I had a top tube bag with reflecting surfaces and it irritated me immensely. These days, I use 3M spoke reflectors. They work well and are not in my field of vision.
Good to see you back, even better to see that adorable little child of yours. Glad to hear everyone is doing well. Enjoy every minute, some day she’ll be 19 and in college like mine. Time goes by way too quickly.
Seems like my kid was just born, and now he's 11. Crazy how that works. Congrats Luke! Sleep when they sleep, and know that you are almost certainly a far better parent than you'll feel like in the moment.
For future reference: For occasional/amateur paint jobs medium Scotchbright/scuff pads are all you need to key in paint between coats, even the green ones for doing the dishes if you aren't after a perfect finish.
I know you said you liked the resulting grey colour. However if you wanted a much lighter finish a coat of white undercoat prior to the reflective paint would make a big difference. Also the reflective paint would go further. Loved seeing your little bundle of joy. Thank you Luke and best wishes.
Congratulations on yourl little one. 🎉🎉🥳 Glad to hear all 3 of you are doing well. The nappy changes blur into faint memories and only the important stuff sticks with you. Be a good new dad and pamper the missus , make meals, shop, wash clothes, tidy up - she may not say much about but by god she’ll be happy you’re kicking in at home. All the best to the 3 of you.
Thanks for highlighting this useful product. A helmet would be a good application. In conjunction with a reflective tape vest, you can be seen if you come off. (Particularly if you come off your bike and are incapacitated at night.) In Australia, trucking accessory shops sell highly reflective adhesive tape in a range of colours. Unfortunately it is stiff and better suited to flat or cylindrical surfaces. It may be brought to a softening point by heating in order to mould it, but I haven't tried that yet. In order to cover my motorbike helmet I used a lot of creative relief cuts. "It will be difficult to miss me." (I hope that's not a Freudian slip.)
I bought a 1,000m spool of light reflective thread from eBay/AliExpress. It's really 2 threads (colour and light reflective), but I only use the light reflective one. Much like a spider web it's hardly visible on the garment, so it won't clash. I had/learned the patience to sew a criss-cross pattern (3mm spread) along strategic seams. ie. End of a 1.5" waist adjusting tab on my jean jacket, 6" seam on my sleeves and around the perimeter of a shoulder patch.
A similar effect can be achieved relatively cheaply and with way less hassle by buying 3m reflective tape off amazon. I have a black bike and have their black reflective tape on my bike that took around 10 minutes to install. I believe they have other colors as well as a trasnparent version. During the day you don't notice the tape very much except for where it's worn from a year of riding, and at night it's super visible. I keep it on the frame triangle and fork but you could also easily put it on seat stays, crank arms, and where ever is relatively straight.
Pro tip- if the spray paint can is clogging while using it, simply hold it upside down and spray for a couple of seconds and it should clear the nozzle. Also, when you're done spraying you want to do this every time so the nozzle won't be clogged the next time you use it.
Congratulations to you all. As for the paint, this would be good on full length black mudguards I have which do have reflective mudflaps but lighting up the mudguards fully would be better. Also, the rims on db wheels, whether fully painting the rims or adding some bands to the rims would be good.
Very cool idea! I have a reflective helmet that I use for bickepacking/commuting, but this is even better. I’d wish more bikes come with this paint scheme as a standard.
Yeah, that'd be really cool. Edit to add: If you set up a show window properly, it could even be a fantastic selling point at night. You'd see this "glowing" bike in the window at night.
Congrats to you and your wife. Mini Trace Velo is gorgeous! Wont be long before we see you looking for all your tools in your vids and them all being in her hands!
I'm riding TRP HY-RD for over a year now, on my road and my gravel bikes. And at first was very satisfied. Had first issues after about 10k km, so that's pretty good. One calliper broke down, another needed bleeding. Still using them on my road bike, maybe for the rest of the season. But in gaverl bike switched back to mechanical TRP Spyre-C. In my mind now there're only two options: full hydro or full mech. Because of the maintenance issues.
@@Missinglink3003 Exactly. Despite some problems eg.: mounting/dismounting internal cables and bleeding whole system once in a while, hydro is still better option. It's closed system, so dirt and water don't get inside the cables and freeze (happened to me more than once) or slow breaking action, and it is still more responsive and powerfull for gravel (and road, I guess). Another thing with Hy-Rd's is: you need a TRP linar housung and TRP cable for the brakes to work properly (accortding to the TRP, of coures). It's not like you won't set them up with your other cables and housing, but it get flicky to tune them right. And - that's still not the breaking power of full hydro. I switched to mechanicals cause it's easier to maintenance on longer trips in remote areas if something happen.
I've used this stuff for several years while commuting in winter, I sprayed my shoes and overshoes with it, it really works as the movement and reflection draws attention.
Congrats on the birth of bub and glad mum and bub are doing well. High visibility is always great on the bike. I go fairly full on high vis. Bright yellow helmet, headlight, taillight and fairly bright kit. During winter I go with a high vis yellow waterproof riding jacket which has retroreflective strip on it.
Currently adjusting to the nappy changes and lack of sleep that comes with a 2wk old myself, too! Congrats again! And so glad to hear you're all doing ok 😊 I did wonder whether this paint would go well on her pram frame too 🤔 though may have to settle for some fairy lights cable tied around the carrycot!!
The best bit by far is at the end, obviously. On the other hand, you have managed to make watching paint dry interesting! There are more layers to it than one thinks. 🥖
Congrats on the latest addition to your family Luke! Best wishes and great episode. I always heard the smaller surface area of the frame and the shape of the tubing wouldn't work well for reflection, as you noted, but works much better than expected 🥖🥖🥖🥖
Hey - congrats Luke... To you and your family... Not spotted you out lately around BH, and MG - will shout you down again when our paths cross - take care...
Good to see you back Luke, and thank you for showing us your new born daughter! Clearly very proud as you should be and im sure Siroko can knock up some baby gear for her. 😁😁😁 best wishes to you Mrs Trace Velo and junior.
Congrats to y'all! I remember volvo making a reflective paint that can be washed off aimed for the cycling market... Different use case as it can be applied to fabrics but still another way to be seen on the roads at night especially for commuters. Great video as always 🥖🥖🥖
Congratulations 🎉. I commute by cycle most days and appreciate any additional reflective or illumination tips. It can be really difficult finding good quality gear thats not black or dark coloured. Have been following for a long time and took your advice on the didoo cycle wear. Its holding up great even after 3 plus years of weekly wear and washes. Appreciate the sponsor situation, and im sure its great stuff, but its still quite a lot more expensive than didoo. Another one id like to see is gloves and overshoes. My hands are always cold at this time of year (probable Reynauds) and some good glove recommendations would make life so much better.
I have used strips of 3M retroreflective vinyl along strategic points such as down the forks, along the top tube and seat stays, and over the dead badge. I know this covers branding and what not but the downtube logo is clearly visible but the bike is over 10 years old and it's my winter do it all workhorse. I'm going to be riding that thing until it falls apart, I'm not looking for resale value. And congratulations on becoming a dad! She is adorable and I am glad to hear Mum is doing well too. Best wishes to the three of you!
Congratulations Luke on the safe arrival of your gorgeous baby girl! Glad to hear your new family are doing well. As for the reflective paint well,..I think I’ll stick to high vis clothing 😊
Rims are worth doing I reckon, water gets spun off as you go and drivers can make you out as a bike from the side across junctions etc... New daughter is Very cute, mine are a bit (much) older than that now, the first couple of years are very special and seemed to shoot by, enjoy it.
top tip for applying aerosol paint, place the tin in lukewarm water for 20 minutes prior to use. Slightly raising the temperature of the paint enables much better flow and allows you to control the spray much better.
I think as a long time viewer it's about time #Siroko brought out the Trace Velo jersey/range! Thanks for the codes over the yrs and I can confirm great kit.
Same here! I ordered a pair of Black Sea "winter" bibs a month ago, great kit and with the tracevelo link code even better! I've had the bib short version (Flandrien) for over a one and a half year now and love it as well
Congratulations on your daughter! And thanks for the video. Since you did that project I think you’ve saved me the trouble of doing it. Great work as always:-)
Congrats on the new arrival!! I'm really looking forward to your TRP hyroad review. I have a mechanical disc brake bike and the brakes are awful. I need help! 😆😅
I had good luck with the TRP's for a few years they were right up there with full hydro systems. But last fall they started to act up and even had a almost complete failure on one ride. Did allot of fiddling and got them working but not to what they had been rebuild kits were a few months out when I contacted TRP so ended up finding a used Full hydro version of my group set for a good deal so rocking that now.
Congratulations on the baby news, I wish you all the best. Brand name bike maker will soon add this paint as an option for an insane price, they might call it "Smart Reflective Nano Crystal Coating.
Tip from a body specialist heat the tins up in hot water or put them on top of your radiator on low for 10 mins just to warm these types of thicker partical paints up and metallics! The heat thins the paint and is much nicer to spray plus you get alot more out a tin! Just take care use common sence im sure there will be something online on a bodyshop video or something, but can confirm this has worked for me for many year's also stops orange peel!
Used to have the same brakes and I was quite satisfied. Those things handled alpine descends without a problem. However, fully hydraulic brakes are still much better IMHO. The semi-hydraulic ones are a good stop-gap solution for people who don't want to upgrade the entire groupset but got a hold of a disc brake frame.
Thoughtful of you to share something that could make a valuable contribution to road safety, Luke. I think it reflects well on you.
This needs to be top comment
😂
Hear hear!

Came to the comments to look for this. Really just knocking the shine off with a gray pad is all he needed.
I know you said you liked the resulting grey colour. However if you wanted a much lighter finish a coat of white undercoat prior to the reflective paint would make a big difference. Also the reflective paint would go further.
Loved seeing your little bundle of joy. Thank you Luke and best wishes.
Also came here to see if scotch(bright) pads were mentioned. No need for sandpaper, especially a low grit variant...too harsh.
Congratulations on yourl little one. 🎉🎉🥳 Glad to hear all 3 of you are doing well.
The nappy changes blur into faint memories and only the important stuff sticks with you.

I could not imagine a more beautiful and charm end for a bike video, THANKS!

Congratulations on the Trace Velo mini! Awesome show! Wishing you all a wonderful tomorrow!

Best bonus clip yet, Congratulations to you both she’s adorable 🎉❤
Congrats to you and your wife. Mini Trace Velo is gorgeous! Wont be long before we see you looking for all your tools in your vids and them all being in her hands!
Congratulations Luke! Thanks for sharing her beautiful face with us for a moment! Very best to you all!
Congrats on the new arrival Luke. It's hard work, but so rewarding too
Congratulations Luke. Just wishing you and yours happiness. Your daughter is gorgeous. Enjoy.
Absolutely amazing mate. Enjoy all the moments you can when you hold her in your hands because they don’t last long. Congrats mate
Congratulations on the little one im glad the baby is healthy and you are holding up. I wish you al the best 😊
Congrats on the baby! I can’t believe mine are almost out of the house and off on their own. It goes by fast - enjoy every second!!
Congratulations on your new arrival to the family, Best wishes to you all.

Congrats on the baby Luke. Wish you and your family the best!
Great bike build!!! Congrats on your daughter!!!!
Glad to hear everything is doing well. Thanks for introducing us to your little one.
Congratulations with that beautful baby girl!!! And I quite like the look of the reflective paint, that grey bike doesn't look that bad at all.
Currently adjusting to the nappy changes and lack of sleep that comes with a 2wk old myself, too! Congrats again! And so glad to hear you're all doing ok 😊

Congradulations gowing up the family Luke! Love and light
Super adorable little Trace Velo. Congratulations to you and the missus.
BABY!! Congratulations Luke! It's the best life can offer
Interesting video, congrats on your new addition to your family. You’ll love being a dad. Enjoy and have fun! 🙂

Congrats Luke!! She looks beautiful 💕💕
Glad you are back was worried your channel was silent for a month happy to see your daugther is doing well so as the mum

I’m glad baby and momma are well. You’re a lucky man!
Reflective motorcycle wheel tape is also an easy way to add reflectivity to a bike and/or helmet.
Agree, can get retroreflective 3m product that might be a better alternative
I have used strips of 3M retroreflective vinyl along strategic points such as down the forks, along the top tube and seat stays, and over the dead badge. Nice experiment Luke. You can never be too visible during the dark winter months.
Congrats on the new arrival!
Congratulations Luke on the safe arrival of your gorgeous baby girl! Glad to hear your new family are doing well. As for the reflective paint well,..I think I’ll stick to high vis clothing 😊
Had thought about this but never thought it would work. Now I have a weekend project! Thanks

Love how your mind works. Really thinking outside the square here.
Congratulations to you all! N+1 in another context🙂
Great experiment with the reflective paint and interesting outcome!
I had a pair of the reflective Fizik shoes, they are AMAZING for visibility as the feet move, so it does a good job at capturing attention.

Well donen to all of you Luke, great videos from a great guy! Love to all!
Congrats on the new arrival and looking forward to the TRP brake review as wanna upgrade some standard mechanical disc brakes on one of my bikes
Super chuffed for you, how’s sleepless nights ..good to hear mum and baby are fine 🫶👍
Don’t think I will rush out to paint my frame in that ..😀
This is such a cool idea. Ive been wondering how to paint my disc wheel for commuting and i think this is genius
Painting it in a pattern might make it even more visible at night, because it'd be a moving light pattern.
Congrats on the new arrival!! I'm really looking forward to your TRP hyroad review. I have a mechanical disc brake bike and the brakes are awful. I need help! 😆😅
Congrats on your lovely Daughter ! Nice video as always ... am tempted to try this out on raw Ti frame may blend in nicely
Congratulations and all the very best to you and your family.
Great idea with this project. It turned out rather well, I reckon
Congratulations to you and your family, Luke!
Congrats best wishes to you and the fam. Been enjoying your content great reviews for people looking for alternatives
Huge congrats on your new baby!!!
Very interesting indeed. I agree, highlights rather than the whole frame. And it's great to see a properly besotted Dad!
Congratulations Luke! 🎉
Congrats to the young family
I had good luck with the TRP's for a few years they were right up there with full hydro systems. But last fall they started to act up and even had a almost complete failure on one ride. Did allot of fiddling and got them working but not to what they had been rebuild kits were a few months out when I contacted TRP so ended up finding a used Full hydro version of my group set for a good deal so rocking that now.
Now that was a lovely video. fun paint test and congrats :)
I was only thinking today you'd been quiet since your last video when you said she was due. Congratulations to all of you!
I have TRP Hy/Rds on two of my bikes, my training road bike and my gravel bike. Best non-hydraulic brake calipers I've ever used.
Non skid areas on sailing boat decks can be done similar by adding tiny glass beads to the deck paint and it glows brilliantly plus very grippy.
Congrats on your new arrival. Wonderful news. So exciting.
Good video btw
Congratulations on the baby news, I wish you all the best.
Brand name bike maker will soon add this paint as an option for an insane price, they might call it "Smart Reflective Nano Crystal Coating.

Congratulations on your daughter!!!
🤣🤣 This was a crazy project! Never thought of it! Thanks for the show. Sweet daughter ❤❤
Congratulations, Luke!❤
Cool video, welcome back, and congratulations on the new baby! :D
Congratulations Luke, as always a top class video, keep up the great work
Congrats for the new family member!
Gorgeous little girl, mate well done. Glad the missus is doing well too.
Congratulations to you and the mother w.r.t the baby. Best wishes for the future❤❤❤
Brilliant idea!
I was thinking about getting some reflective stickers for my wheels to add a bit of nighttime viz.
Cheers
Congratulations! and that bike paint does look awesome too, might just spray my bike seat post!
Massive congrats Luke and wife!
