The fact that the first hour of the movie is mostly just narration and exposition but is still extremely entertaining shows the talent of both Scorsese as a director and Schoonmaker as an editor.

A narrator could be pretty effective, but needs to be done with perfection... to achieve that you need very very good writers, in this case Scorsese himself and Nicholas Pileggi, who also co-wrote the script of Goodfellas and the last Scorsese movie, I don't remember its title, didn't watch it yet

Just finished Frank Cullotta's autobiography. He was an advisor on the film and was good friends with Anthony Spilotro (Pesci's character). Watching Casino after reading that book is insane cause you "know" the real story of a lot of the scenes.

But Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Departed, Aviator, Gangs of NY, Wolf Wall Street, and some of his others were all I heard about. Back in the days when Vegas was run by the mafia the food, entertainment and hotels were all very high quality and very cheap. The owners didn't mind losing money on them because they knew they'd make the money up in the casinos, which is all they cared about because of "The Skim" which was one of the most profitable rackets in the history of organized crime. Then when law enforcement came down hard on the mafia and the corporations took over everything, suddenly the business model changed and now everything had to turn a profit. Now all of it, the shows, the restaurants, the hotels, everything has to make money which meant that either the prices went up, the quality went down, or both. Vegas isn't the town that it was when the mafia ran everything, but then again you also don't have people being driven out into the desert and buried in shallow graves on a regular basis either, so...

The part I like about this movie is that it includes the transition of Vegas. It was sin city, catering to old school gamblers and other people into decadence. Then it did change and became family friendly. People could take their kids there and spend all day going on rides and whatnot. Senior citizens could go there and play the slot machines all day in a clean and safe environment. In some ways this movie portrays that transitionary time the same way that Boogie Nights portrays the porn transition from being on film shown in theaters to being shot on video for the home market.
