i was just outside, started my 97 5.9 cummins, its about -10 C, not plugged in. It only turned over for maybe 2 seconds and fired up. Trick is you have to squeeze the throttle
@91CTD theres no smoke or hesitation at hot idle at all so i didnt think it was timing. the batteries are both fully charged and brand new and contacts are all clean and everything, its got 15W-40 oil in it still, i need some 0W-40 for winter, which im getting some soon. the volt meter gets pulled down fairly far when the grids are going so im almost wondering if theyre worn out. if it is the grids and they cost an arm and a leg its getting an ether start aid like whats on a 30 series john deere
@6030diesel The timing could be out of wack from when someone put the pump on. You really need a tool to check it though.... I'd take the intake peice off the driver side of the engine and put a probe on the grids when you turn the key on, they should be about *500-550 Battery could also be a dead it sounds like it's not cranking very fast, or the starter.
Haha, so true. Congrats on the 5.9. I have always wanted one of those too, but I already have too many trucks, and sadly I am planning another build... ;)
@dieseltorque4x4 you arent pissing me off lol. i know it can, the 5.9 6BT cummins is a goddamnmonster after i ground the fuel plate down some and pushed it all the way forward. the 6.2 is like you said, real loud and cool looking, and lots of fun to drive and stuff, but for sheer torque and power to haul or tow im going to be looking at the cummins.
@91CTD lol yea lets see what 500*F does to an explosive spray shall we? ive seen what it does when it hits a glowplug so i cant imagine a grid heater is much different when ether hits it.
Just put some regular automatic transmission fuel in your fuel filter houseing next time you change your fuel filter. It cleans thos injector tips off first try! Not a joke by the way it works great ask around. As far as starting it starts fine. Just run your grid cycle 2 or 3 time buddy. Remember this is all mechanical soo the only thing that aids it in start up is a good lift pump and clean fuel. Also the grid heaters help to. But that only warms air going intonyour cylinder.
@6030diesel Spray ether on grids and see what happens...lol just cycle them a few times and plug it in. It'll start up no matter what. It'l never not start and leave you stranded I'll guarantee you that.....But it's not starting like a normal cummins does.
@cantbeata2stroke i was giving it a little throttle then alot of throttle then as soon as i let off the throttle it fired. so i dont know whats up with it.
@91CTD what would cause it not to start right up? its got minimum blowby so im assuming compression should be alright, i havnt done a leakdown test on it yet. injectors andip were redone 20,000 KM's ago. i think. so thats not the issue.
You do not have good compression. Need new sleeves, or rings. I deleted the grid heaters on mine and glow plugs for one video, and it starts a whole lot easier than that. Check it out.
@50sChevyKING ip and injectors were said to have been rebuilt about 20,000 KM's ago. and it doesnt have very much blowby.
My 94 ram 2500 fires right up at -20c, It wont run smooth but she still fires right up. The 24v cummins is the fastest starting diesel in the cold.

@PissOnJapScrap im thinking new grid heater relays. since theyre questionable. ill check em out tomorrow sometime.
@TheGoose428 B series cummins engines are sleeveless... it has fine compression, im thinking the injection pump timing is too far advanced.

@6030diesel never mind i watched it again It's cranking fine. batteries seem good.....try cycling more than once.

@IDIDieselJohn im guessing the grid heaters are half assed screwed.

That hard start is not a stock timing problem 😉
@HuckThis1971 mine needs a new grid heater
Haha! This is carma for being a "trader"!! The GM gods are striking down on you!
@wellgeo03 haha i still got my 6.2, and love it! a 10 year older GMC still has more quality and better parts on it than the 10 year newer Dodge.

seems like it dont wait to start. and lots of smoke.
@dieseltorque4x4 good call
I got a 95 also that starts no problem @ -15C with 470 000km ;-)
That thing should of started right up at that temp*!
That's not right it should fire up with no grids in that weather.
Grid relays are probly going bad.
starts like mine

needs a tune up
