Been going across that bridge for 50 years. Never heard the nickname white knuckle bridge. I would like if it did not get replaced. It keeps a lot of traffic out of the two small towns of Washington Crossing Pa. and Titusville NJ. The trucks and overweight vehicles weren't an issue until the Scudders Falls bridge was replaced and tolled. Go slow, fold mirrors, in stay right of the centerline. No big deal. If they straighten the NJ approach a new canal bridge will have to be made and the Patriot's restaurant might have to be condemned. On the Pa. side they might have to expand into the park which just had all the buildings of Taylorsville restored. And a new bridge will be tolled.
You have Scudders Falls, Lambertville-Hopewell and Rt202 all within 10 miles of this bridge, no need to replace it with something that'll just allow larger vehicles to cross when there's no room for them on the PA side certainly... and that would require demolishing businesses and/or part of the Washington Crossing Park on the NJ side.

Why don't they just set the already existing traffic lights so that it is one direction at a time?

Because people cannot drive!
