3:16 when George commented on Mark Ruffalo not knowing how to clip his holster I thought he was going to figure it out early.
Same I was gonna say the cat is outta the bag early lol
Same I was like "damn that was quick"
This movie is MEANT to be confusing so when people figure it out too quickly it's boring
Especially the clothes Leonardo wears at the beginning was from someone taller. It shows that they only grabbed what they could find to start the journey. They didn't have any clothes of Leonardo's size on the island.
Yep. Seen very very few people catch that early or recognize its significance. I was in law enforcement for 32 years and remember thinking "that's odd," but then completely discounted it.
@@timothyhedrick5295 For me it was the glass scene that weirded me out but then I told myself it was probably some continuity error.
Fun fact: whenever the nurses and patients mention Dr Sheehan, you can see them glance at ruffalo because they know its him
Watched this film multiple times and never noticed that.
@breememe6192 Yeah, it's crazy, the camera even does a quick cut to him every time
@@breememe6192 I've seen the film several times and many more reactions, and every time I notice something new
omg that's genuius!! this movie is so, so clever
The part where Leo's character is collecting his children from the lake is absolutely devastating. His acting there is superb.
It reminded me of the scenes with his wife in Inception... Or rather, those scenes reminded me of his performance here, in Shutter Island.
he's so good at those scenes. When he screams, you feel that pain
@@Trepanation21 same. I always think of those two in particular. Also thought it's funny how he had a dream within a dream in this movie, considering Inception was also released the same year as Shutter Island lol
The way it’s shot is certainly reminiscent of a particular scene in “Don’t Look Now” when Donald Sutherland’s character emerges from the water.
I think this is the only movie where neither Simone nor George could predict any plot beat and its super fun to watch them try lmao
George came so close right at the beginning with the revolver holster.
Right? I was really surprised they didn't get anything right.
That Truman comparison is so accidently good
Haha yeah I was worried he was accidentally gonna guess the story straight away
You guys nailed the last scene. Most people miss that he was fixed and clear headed but chose to mislead them into thinking he wasn't. "Would you rather live as a monster, or die a good man". Excellent movie.
Hell I missed it in the theatre; it took a reaction video to clue me in a while back.
Most people miss that? I wonder why, because it seemed so obvious to me.
@@SamuelPulkkinen-jp8ev I thought the same. But when I saw it with my sister, even she didn’t catch that.
I had to watch a few reactions to catch it aswell😅
I've seen this movie several times and didn't even catch that until now damn
George's "oh shit" when Andrew says "Gotta get of this rock, Chuck" was so sincere lol
One of the smartest things the film does is the casting: if you were filming a story about evil doctors doing experiments on patients you would cast EXACTLY these actors.
They actually time traveled and got some 1960's asylum workers for this one
It's more creative than Spielberg
Yes! It’s brilliant slight of hand on Scorsese’s part.
Except these are not evil doctors at all.
@@JohnGraves1985 which is of course the point
And yet he won his Oscar for The Revenant. Make it make sense after a performance like this one.
Or Wolf of Wallstreet. Or Django Unchained. It's not like Revenant isn't amazing, but it felt more like an apology by the Academy for their previous blunders. Like they would've given Leo that Oscar that year no matter which movie he played in.
Oscars are often awarded for past work, and they just find a movie that's convenient at the time. He got snubbed many times so they were like "Ah HA character drama ok give it to him".
A re-watch makes this a completely different movie.
Turns it into an heartbreaking tragedy.
Absolutely. It really is 2 movies in one.
@@carlossaraiva8213 Yes. :-(
That's the beauty about any story with huge twists like that. You can rewatch/reread them again and notice all the hints and little details that you either missed or misinterpreted before.
Simone: “I’m confused.”
Everyone who has ever seen this movie: “yeah”.
Leonardo's German is very good. His mother is German and he spent a lot of time here in Germany as a child. 🇩🇪
Lucky fellow.
I was surprised. Never watched the movie in English before, so I never noticed that he speaks German in that scene. He had a slight accent but for an American his German pronounciation was probably as good as it can get. Which is the ironic part because he tells the German doctor that his English is almost perfect.
9:14 Very subtle foreshadowing. She doesn't have the glass in her hand because Teddy (Andrew) is trying to block out water from his mind because of what happened to his kids.
This should have been Leo’s first Oscar.
Noticing that Mark Ruffalo's character doesn't know how to correctly wear his gun was such a good catch! That's an intentional hint that he isn't really a detective, but it's very subtle.
The Warden's monologue about violence is just so unhinged to listen to, I love it
and Levine’s voice makes it even scarier
The warden dislikes him because he gave them so much trouble. Probably just want to goad him to attack so he got excuse for lobotomy and not have to play along with the doctors' plan.
In 2010, Martin Scorsese went against-type and made a psychological horror thriller. One year later, he went against-type again and made a children’s adventure flick. If you ever get the chance, DEFINITELY give Hugo a watch. ❤
Both with Ben Kingsley !
Only about a half dozen of Scorsese's movies have been gangster related. He's also done costume dramas, screwball comedies and biopics.
@@tremorsfan I’m referring more specifically to crime dramas. Not saying he doesn’t go outside of that, but that is what he’s most known for.
@@Little1Cave It depends on how you view films like Gangs of New York and Wolf of Wall Street. I would not classify them as crime dramas. My personal favorite is After Hours.
This is worth a second watch. Noticing stuff like the guards, staff, and patients being on edge around Leo's character hits different when you realize he is the most dangerous patient they have.
The dream scene where his wife crumbles away in his arms is really darn beautiful.
P.S. Shutter Island and Inception both released in 2010, and DiCaprio's characters in each movie have very similar tragic backstories.
It almost felt like type casting! With great results
Yeah, I sometimes get them confused in my mind during a re-watch.
Dream within a dream….
man, that fucking soundtrack too
Every time I see the scene of him coming home to find that his wife killed them reminded me of the end scene in Inception where he gets to see his kids faces and goes to them. It’s a funny little parallel.
I wrote a piece on this movie for my college theory years back. There are so many signs throughout the movie. For example every time there’s water/fire in a scene (rain, drinking water etc) he’s hallucinating. In the scene where he’s questioning the other patients, you see the patient drinking a glass of water, from his point of view the glass is empty, from another point of view it’s full. Also notice whenever he’s in shot in a busy area you’ll always see a guard in the background, but not the background of another person. Fascinating movie, you can watch it twice and see a completely different movie both times
Everything is so different when you're viewing it after the first time.. noticing how the guards are glaring at him when they arrived, the patients, the group discussion, awesome.
This is based on a book by Dennis Lehane. An excellent American author who's had a number of his books adapted into film.
One of my favorite movies of all time. I hope they "get" the ending twist.
Yes! George got it. Great! Quite a few reviewers don't get it, for some reason.
Mine too!
Leo had a rough run from 2008-2010 as a father and husband in Revolutionary Road, Shutter Island, and Inception. And Michelle Williams didn't do so good as a mother of 3 in Shutter Island and Manchester by the Sea.
"My school is in." The most chilling line in cinematic history.
Wait does she literally called him Laedus at 7:48 ?? This is such a good film for reactions because the hints are so obvious from a rewatch standpoint that it’s like you’re watching a game between reactor and film
Good catch. She did refer to him when she said Laeddis, but at that point in the movie we are meant to think that she is warning him about him being out there.
One of the giveaways is he never lights his own cigarettes.
They'd never give him anything actually dangerous.
Also, when the woman picks up the glass and it's not in her hand.
No it isn't. He immediately says his wife died in a fire.
It's almost Memorial Day in the States. I remember and honor the Simone Woo. Gone, but not forgotten. Please bring back the Simone Woo. The people scream out for the Simone Woo.
I just KNEW you were going to figure it out and I'm SO happy you didn't! Much more satisfying to be surprised. You are right - the more you watch, the more you pick up along the way. Such a brilliant film.
This is one of the most accurate book-to-film adaptations I have ever seen. If you enjoyed this, definitely read the novel.
Yes, good job George. The Warden is played by Ted Levine. He was Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs. Also in Heat, which you reacted to awhile back. The deputy is John Carroll Lynch who you saw in Face/Off. Also in Fargo and Zodiac. Michelle Williams was Leo’s wife. A lot of reactors who watch this tend to not recognize her. I believe this was the first movie she acted in after Heath passed. The music used during the ash scene is On the Nature of Daylight by Max Richter. Was used in the opening scene of Arrival. Great job as always, you two.
Levine was also in the American version of "The Bridge" show. El Paso location.
I loooove the glass scene, where she's taking a sip and there isn't a glass.
And omg the ending
One of my favorites of all time. I couldn't believe Leo didn't win the Oscar for this movie. His performance at the end when finding his kids and reliving reality was incredible and heartbreaking.
I have the opposite reaction to Ted Levine as George does, George sees the villain Buffalo Bill and I see the heroic Leland Stottlemyre xD
Leland is very understanding of a man with OCD and germaphobia.
Teddy: "They're the perfect subjects: they talk, nobody listens."
Beaten-up inmate: "This is a game. All of this? This is for you." ...aaand Teddy doesn't listen to him. 😆
The acting, writing, direction, cinematography, score, sound design and editing are all in top form. Truly one of Scorsese’s best films and severely underrated.
I was the driver of the weapons carrier for the CG that was added to the shots done on the East Coast. We did the CG at Disney's Golden Oak studio outside of Los Angeles. I was also a guard at the lighthouse where we were added in.
"Welcome to there's paper on my desk..." This sounds exactly like what I once heard an extreme sleepwalker say. She came out of her bedroom in a panic and proclaimed in wide-eyed terror, "You guys, there's a pillow on my bed!" Her roommates eventually managed to coax her back to her bed after they removed the offending pillow.
😂😂😂
It's funny that you wondered if the patients had taken over. Ben Kingsley was in another film based on an Edgar Allan Poe story where the premise was exactly that.
What movie is that
@@Hater20X Stonehearst Asylum. A surprisingly stacked cast for how unknown it is.
@@jlerrickson thanks
@@jlerricksonI enjoyed it
I love this movie and its plot twist. At the end, as he know the truth, he lied and played a regression to be lobotomized because he felt he didn't deserve to continue living due to what he have done. That is why he said: "What could be worse, to live as a monster (Andrew Laeddis) or die as a good man (Teddy Daniels)?"
If I remember correctly, in the book he actually does regress? But the movie leaves it ambiguous.
The guard called the lighthouse in the beginning a sewage treatment facility because that is the center of the experiments, and he likely doesn't think very highly of the patients.
I'm so glad you understood that he hadn't actually reset ☺ a lot of people don't realise and just think he's regressed and living his illusion again. Well caught
a good segue to say you need to react to The Lighthouse
One of my all time favourites so absolutely yes.
You like my reactions, don't ye? Tell me ya like my reactions!
@@jculver1674 yer fond of me reactions
Hell yes.
Oh yeah!
This film is such a gem, I think it ended up being overshadowed by being released at the same time as Inception, but for me it is SO much better.
George is spot on too, it's worth rewatching so many times. So many little details (that you guys actually picked up on REALLY well!).
The casting in this film is PERFECT, the cinematography is beautiful (just that first dream sequence should win all the awards), and such a painfully beautiful story.
This movie was particularly traumatizing to me, because I had a cousin who died pretty similarly to the kids in this movie, at only 3 years old. The pond just wasn't that deep and it was an accident. Divided the family from my mother's side....
But that was over 20 years ago. My mother has even since died....
Sorry if I bummed anyone out. I need to tell this story from time to time. 😅
I wish everyone a happy weekend! 🤗
Aww, I'm sorry that happened
@@lorettabes4553 thank you. 😔🤝
Her name was Sarah-Alischa....
May Sarah-Alischa rest in beautiful peace. I'm so sorry about your family tragedy.
One of Scorsese’s lesser known masterpieces. Watching is during a rainstorm is one of my favorite things
They advertised this movie with commercials that said it had a shocking twist, which is the dumbest thing you can do because now you’re trying to guess the twist the whole movie.
My first time watching it with my friends, some of whom had seen it before, right when they found that piece of paper that said “who is 67?” I said it’s definitely Leonardo DiCaprio and he’s the missing 67th patient. Everyone yelled at me saying I just ruined the movie and no one believed me when I said I was just trying to guess the twist and I hadn’t seen it before lol
georges little smile and laugh after saying wrong time to ask a lady if shes wet when simone was to invested to realise what he said ahaha. i got you brother!
She did know and react.
Be glad you didn’t see the trailer first, I guessed the twist at the trailer…pissed off a few of my friends when I was right 🤷🏻♂️😂
pfffft your "that" type of guy...... ahaha dad did the same to my mom with sixth sense ahahaha
The author of the book this movie is adapted from also wrote for The Wire.
For some reason this movie gets way much better when you binge watch it despite having a very important twist
I've watched thousands of movies in my life...
Shutter Island is the only movie I ever watched again immediately after and was blown away by all the little things I missed! Great movie with a great ending!
Watching Shutter Island a second time once you know is WILD
When this movie first hit theaters, I saw it twice within the span of a week. The first time I was confused, but one that second viewing it was like watching "The Sixth Sense" and knowing the secret. I could spot all kinds of clues and loaded glances among the characters. Second time was definitely more enjoyable.
One of favorite DiCaprio movie. Performance its just brilliant. Love the reaction!
That nightmare scene immediately put me in mind of 1408 (2007), starring John Cusack. Phenomenal horror film, and I would love to see your guys' reaction to it sometime!
Yes, but the theatrical version. The director's cut screws up the ending.
The back and forth between Cusack and Sam Jackson is so good, and I hated that room so much by the end of that movie
The reason the guards were so on edge at the beginning is because they knew it was a role playing skit. The CGI is also deliberately bad in the opening because they were never on a boat. The clues are right in the opening scene.
I can't believe that (me included) the ending was a big debate when it came out. Some people thought it was open ended, some people couldn't decide. After a few watches it became so clear to me that the ending was clear; he knew and was lucid but decided to die pretending to not know.
I sort of guessed the twist to this the first time I watched because I thought it was odd that such a heavy smoker had to ask other people for cigarettes and lighters, like he wasn't allowed to carry that on him.
"He's choosing to go out at a moment of clarity"
I think that's the best summation of the final scene I've heard up to now. It's kind of weird, because when I first saw this film, it never occurred to me that the ending was supposed to be ambiguous. I just thought it was obvious that Laeddis was faking a relapse because he had accepted reality but realised that he couldn't live with himself going forward. The giveaway for me is when he asks Ruffalo the "live as a monster or die as a good man" question, which shows to me that he is lucid enough to ask a question like that, not the sort of thing a person of unsound mind would be able to express.
The "I love lamp" intro made me unreasonably happy before starting a tough movie.
Damn EVERY single time I rewatch this movie I notice something new.
This is such a GREAT movie, and the second or third viewing of it is perhaps even better, knowing the plot, so you can sit and pick up on the small clues here and there
Holy hell George, you picked up on so many details! It's impressive, very observant
I'm currently watching Josh Brolin's Sci-fi show on Amazon Prime "Outer Range" about him playing a farmer discovering a bottomless hole in his land. It's my new favorite show, Fallout was my new fav but I finished that.
My only small gripe about this movie is saying he’s a “monster” and his “crime is terrible.” I don’t know about that. I think a lot of people with children would say shooting your spouse after coming home to find they drowned all 3 of your kids is a not entirely unjustifiable action. Am I wrong?
Agree. His shooting her was a traumatic reaction.
This is such a clever film. It actually never hides the 'twist', which means you can watch it multiple times and you notice something different every time. One of Scorseses best, which says a lot!
Michelle Williams is one of my all time favorite actresses. I really wonder where she's been recently, I loved her in EVERYTHING I've seen with her.
If you wanna feel miserable for one afternoon, especially as a couple, I would highly recommend watching Blue Valentine. Her and Ryan Gosling. Mesmerizing plot and performances. You won't be the same after watching that movie. It's brilliant and I love it....
13:46 he was the killer in the silence of the lambs ... 14:00 is right and captain Leland Stottlemeyer in monk
Great movie. Writing, casting, everything.
I always enjoy your videos, perfect for slight hangover when I don't have the energy to shuffle my dvd's for picks. 🙂
Thanks for quality content yet again.
My favourite quotes of your commentaries so far:
Simone: - "...he's got all the hoity-toity things and things."
George: -"Oh the foot....shit!"
😝🤘
There's a guaranteed cure for that.
Oooh, I didn't know Buffalo Bill was in this movie. Though seeing him in Monk all those years ago, I think playing a guy in uniform fits him better.
I liked this video SO FAST, been waiting all week for this!
I’ve been watching you guys for several years now and I’ve noticed George mention several times about not really having any friends. I hope he’s just kidding. (We know he has at least 1 good friend in Simone.) I can’t imagine George not having tons of friends. He seems so fun and likable. George, want a middle aged lady friend from the US? lol.
Some people think there's a Simone in these reactions. 🙃
Ted Levine, good ol' Buffalo Bill himself, showing up and stealing the scene entirely was such an unexpected and awesome surprise for me the first time I watched this film. This movie is one of those that is better the 2nd time through for sure. The ending seems so typical until the last 60 seconds, when it hits you with that absolute uppercut and you realize there's so much shit you missed your first time through that you need to watch it again.
Somehow I missed the announcement for this movie, so it's a surprise when I logged on to UA-cam for my nightly binge and I saw this.
One of my absolute favorite films. Thank you for doing this. :)
Jackie Earle Haley is an underrated character actor and many don't even realize he's George Noyce.
every time there is fire in the scene, it means Teddy is having hallucinations.
He would rather die believing his alter ego being a good man rather than live knowing he’s a monster. Even though he’s not a monster but he feels like it.
The last recorded lobotomy took place in 1967 and ended in the death of the patient who it was performed on they’ve also stopped lobotomies due to the medication he was on that didn’t work for him chlorpromazine if they were that effective I think they’d still have them today
Guys, the storm was also a hallucination and I'll explain why.
In the lighthouse Dr Cawley says "I know every detail, Rachel Solando, your missing partner, the storm...". The storm isn't real and is a hallucination / delusion that gives Andrew a valid reason as to why he cannot leave the island. "I thought you were leaving?" - "It's not like we can take the ferry". Also the storm supposedly wrecked the courtyard with trees and debris everywhere it was a complete mess, yet somehow the next day the courtyard is in immaculate condition again? The trees are all standing upright again and everything is intact. Lastly the storm magically disappears and it's clear sunny skies as soon as Andrew is of sound mind again which tells us he is no longer hallucinating the storm.
I hope you guys do more of Dennis Lehane's movies. He's the person who wrote the book to which the film is based on, and he also wrote two other great movies: Gone Baby Gone and Mystic River.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Leo is my favorite actor and this is my second favorite performance of his behind The Departed. The departed and Shutter Island are my two favorite Scorsese movies as well as my two favorite Leo movies.
theres also a theory that he was sane the whole time, and theres actually some good arguments for that im told.
This movie is just one long twilight zone episode, that's what feels like to me.
this is one of my favorite films. It is 100% a movie you need to watch multiple times. There are so many intentional continuity errors, and moments that highlight where it was going. You guys picked up on the cup of water but there are a bunch of others. The idea in having them in the film intentionally was that viewers would see them but not realize it thus creating a sense of unease.
The best part of this film is watching it again and feeling like an idiot for not figuring it out
Sometimes I watch your reactions to things I haven't seen just to see if it's something I want to watch. I had to pause this half way through and go watch it before I came back. Good movie!
I did initially interpret the final line Leo says as him making the choice but since then I have watched it several times and even looked up a lot of what they talk about concerning medical history and came to the sadder conclusion that perhaps Laedis may have had a genuine concern subconsciously that he was delusional. I think we fault psychology a lot for unremarkable results when in fact healing takes time if the damage is that severe. If the disease is sudden or chronic we have to believe that the desired result requires time, which Teddy didn't have, sadly. But the doctors then wanted nothing more than immediate results and resorted to the last desperate decision when they didn't get it. Teddy might have been on his way to healing but the cost of bringing him there might have been too high given the era and circumstances.
I can’t believe I’d forgotten how much I love this movie! Funny, I don’t think I’ve seen it since the cinema
I LOVE twisty movies like this, where you don't know what's real or not. Awesome.
Brilliant film. The way the story builds up the twist ending could go either way. Leo could be a mental patient being helped by good doctors or he could be a real detective being brainwashed by evil doctors.
In case no one mentioned this yet because I’m less than halfway through this video so someone might’ve brought it up already, but it’s interesting you should bring up Skyrim and then Max Von Sydow came up a few minutes later, he was actually in Skyrim as one of the prisoners rescued during one of the missions. at the time when I was playing the game I didn’t even have to look it up. I knew that voice in a heartbeat.
The white orderly who was in the bathroom when Rachel “escaped” is Joe Sikora. He played Ginger in season 1 of True Detective.
Leo's character also got ill to violently ill or very weirded out, each time water was in the scene...
The first scene boat ride, the storm scenes and of course the lady drinking from the glass / no glass.
The PTSD of the lake scene wrecked him, hence the water weirdness. I'm sure it would anyone, especially in the early 50's.
I kept expecting you both to guess what was going on early in the film.
Glad you didn't figure it out till the twist end, and were shocked, like the rest of us. Well Done... Great reaction...
Any way you guys can do the Triple XxX movies series... with Vin Diesel and Ice Cube? and "The Pacifier" again Vin Diesel?
I know they're kind of cheesy bad but I think they're right up your alley.
This movie is such a different experience during the second viewing; so many scenes take on a new meaning when you know the twist at the end
There’s such subtle clues in this movie like when the lady says that Sheehan is easy on the eyes and it cuts to Mark Ruffalo.
When you rewatch this everything makes more sense XD.
Before I've even started the video: HELL YES! I can already tell that this is gonna be a great reaction to a great movie
The best intro by far was when she sang Hero. That was amazing. lol
I read a book in high school that had a similar plot it was called . I am the cheese . It blew my mind . I know this was made from a book too but how they directed the visuals and dream states is amazing leo crushes every role but it was so fun to watch it's like how they did inceptions effects . I also loved how they keep the audience confused to even question their common sense. The lighthouse logically can't fit nothing in it but u root for him so much and want him to succeed it's like u go crazy with him lol even all doctors laugh at him n mension the rule of four in front of him really early on which i think was clever. the ending line was great idea. Thnx for reaction guys I absolutely loved your theory that they all switched places ha ha sounded like the experiment movie ( based on psychology experiment where they got volunteers to pretend to be cops and inmates in a fake prison.)
