These people had dignity and class. That's what made the comedy work. They didn't have to descend to the gutter or be vicious. There are still a few - a very few - public figures left who have genuine dignity but not enough. I guess we get what we ask for.

Loved Mr. Welles in “The Stranger” with Loretta Young, Edward G Robinson and Richard Long, I believe. Memory is going fast. He had such a presence and marvelous speaking voice.
