Drawn from their 20 years on the Park Records label, The Essential Steeleye Span: Catch Up looks back at the recent history of one of the most prolific bands of their age. From 1996’s Time up to their Wintersmith collaboration with the late Sir Terry Pratchett, the album features some of the most memorable moments in Steeleye’s long and distinguished career; whether it be from their string of acclaimed Park releases or a number of new recordings of their most famous songs. Including rare and unreleased material, this is the perfect release for those new to the group or returning fans - a snapshot of a band still at the peak of their creative powers.

    Somewhere Along The Road
A beautiful, largely a capella arrangement highlights the emotional depth that has attracted so many artists over the years, each voice blending in perfect harmony to bring a choral feel reminiscent of the band's classic Christmas hit 'Gaudette'. Topped off by violinist Jesse May Smart's exquisite strings, it is a song both to delight long term fans of the band and one to appeal to all lovers of thoughtful, poignant songwriting. As Kemp himself says, "a song of the natural desire and search for sanctuary and a kindred spirit, 'Somewhere Along the Road' seems to reflect our human needs in these unsettled times more than ever".
'Somewhere Along The Road' appears as a previously unreleased track on The Essential Steeleye Span - Catch Up, an album that gathers together the finest moments of the band's twenty year (and counting) relationship with Park Records. It features not only highlights of their original albums during this time but also a number of new versions of their most famous songs and is backed by an extensive UK tour.

There are musicians and music groups that will be remembered and listened to for generations and generations.
Steeleye Span is definitely on that list!

Nonsense! In 100 years Steelye Span will be forgotten by almost everyone except maybe a small number of music historians.

From Keith Jones Christian drummer Barnstaple North Devon. After 45 years of playing on the road, now retired to Bude. Enjoyed this song from Steeleye Span, always a good band. Was on the same bill with them back in l972, when I was with UK band Spirogyra. We were actually playing in France at the time. Enjoyed the few days we had over there - it seems a long time ago now, maybe one day we'll meet somewhere along the road! God Bless (K.J.) Psalm 23.

    Beautiful
Can't imagine who would bother to give this a thumbs down, that is sad. Steeleye Span is so great and has lasted so long with such wonderful different unique music.

Steeleye Span... I grew up with them and as a kid, I knew all lyrics by heart of their first albums. Then I lost them, but found them again, recently and my goodness..., meanwhile, these folks didn't sit still and made so many fantastic albums. Three cheers for Spotify and UA-cam.
This song, Somewhere Along The Road is sung so beautifully and all the voices go so well together, but in all honesty, I must say that I miss Peter Knight's contribution so much. His voice is so touching and unreplaceable. And the way he plays the violin..., like no other. Will he ever join the band again? Who knows...!

My favourite version is Maddy Prior’s from the Silly Sisters album. To me, that is the version which truly conveys the full beauty of this song. Just her voice and piano.

Her version from the album “Year” makes me cry. I heard it playing at work a few years back and I had to google it on my break and it made me burst out bawling upon hearing it. My favorite version. The one from Silly Sisters is okay too.

I am part of Ewanrigg Community Choir in Maryport (Cumbria UK) We are fortunate enough to not only have had a workshop with Maddy Prior - we also had Rick Kemp with us and last night we performed our version of `Deep in the darkest night` for him - which he loved. He then sang `Somewhere Along The Road` for us and asked that we do a version as well. Its a gorgeous tune and we shall be only too pleased to add this song to our list of songs. Rick your a great guy - looking forward to having you back with us to hear the song.

THE song to heal today-in multiple and evocative ways. For 6 weeks, I have been considering whether I’d like to integrate this song into my repertoire, listening to Maddy’s solo version-deciding whether acapella or with what instruments, what might go well before and after - like that. At first, I was hearing it sung from a hopeful heart seeking love. It still is that, but the resonances and echoes in the earth community’s challenges this very moment, are louder today than ever. “Somewhere a Voice” leaves interpretation in hope open. Love this version, all of you. Stay Safe.

    Somewhere along the road
    Someone waits for me
Beyond these present storms that blow
    Waiting patiently
No secrets held in an open heart
A spirit that soars over mountains
    Somewhere along the road
    Someone waits for me
    Somehow a guiding light
    Always shows the way
To those who lose their way by night
    Searching for the day
    A day away from happiness
Tomorrow will bring a new sunrise
    Somewhere along the road
    Someone waits for me
    Sometime when winds are still
    Unexpectedly
    Perhaps beyond this silent hill
A voice will call to me
Raise your eyes to see my world
Raise your voice and sing out
    Somewhere along the road
    Someone waits for me

In addition to the very useful answer from Cain, the video must have been recorded at two locations. The second being the magical Stones Barn where Maddy holds her superb classes. My wife, Carol was lucky enough to go on a singing course there for her 50th birthday present.

I know that over time bands change - yes members come and go, sounds evolve, and the technology to make music improves. But at some point you have to say goodbye and move on. Steelye Span of 2023 is not the Steelye Span of 1975. It is what it is!

I commented on this once before but my comment has seemingly been deleted. This is a nice song but it is not Steeleye Span. Far to orchestrated and over engineered. Maddy, I have listened to you since you and Tim started. But it is time to end it.

There's no pleasing some people, really. If they did it exactly as they did it 30 years ago, you'd say that they haven't progressed, moved their style along, experimented with new ideas; if they do, then you complain that it's not the old Steeleye Span. The only change I would have made to this clip would be to have Maddy sing one verse solo, apart from that, it is beautiful, anthemic even.
